Ricardo Lamas Reveals He Fought With Blood Clot At UFC Argentina

Longtime UFC featherweight competitor Ricardo Lamas reveals that he fought with a blood clot at UFC Argentina last weekend.

It looks like Ricardo Lamas battled through quite a bit to get to UFC Argentina last week (Sat. November 17, 2018).

Lamas defeated Darren Elkins in the third round of their co-main event meeting. He is one of the very few men to have finished Elkins via TKO in his MMA career. With the victory, Lamas ended a two-fight losing skid.

He also cracked back into the top ten in the featherweight rankings. While things went Lamas’ way last week in Buenos Aires, things just as easily could’ve gone terribly wrong. “The Bully” recently took to his Instagram account and issued a lengthy statement.

In it, he revealed that he fought Elkins in Argentina with a blood clot. He found out about it just after making his trip overseas prior to his fight. Apparently, the clot formed in his calf muscle during the flight to Argentina from sitting in a tight space for so long.

If the clot became dislodged during the fight, things could’ve gone very terribly wrong:

“Thank you to my teams [MMA Masters] and [UFC Gym Naperville] thank you to family and my supporters.

“My first day Argentina I noticed that my left calf muscle felt tight and sore to the touch, I thought maybe it was a small muscle pull or something of that nature, but as the week went on it worsened.

“The day of the fight I had someone work on it to try and get the muscle to release and it was extremely painful.

“After getting it checked out by the doctors and having an ultrasound done on the muscle, it turns out I formed a blood clot in my calf muscle during the flight to Argentina from being seated in a tight area for so long.

“Things could’ve ended badly if the clot became dislodged during the fight. So I guess I also have to thank whoever was watching over me during the fight.

“So I guess I can say I ‘fought wit a bloodclot blood clot!’ (Rasta voice).”

A college football game between Michigan & Indiana was responsible for the UFC Argentina prelims drawing more viewers than the main card last Saturday (Nov. 17, 2018) night.

The UFC Argentina prelim headliner between Michel Prazeres and  Bartosz Fabinski drew 707,000 viewers. That is the best number for prelims on FOX Sports 1 since the first FS1 show of 2018.

The main card headliner saw Argentina’s own Santiago Ponzinibbio take out the No.8 ranked Neil Magny. The bout averaged just 632,000 viewers.

The ratings steadily declined throughout the show leading many to think the audience was still being boosted by the big number from the football game that ended some two hours earlier.

Cynthia Calvillo’s first-round submission win over Poliana Botelho was the most-watched match on the main card. It drew 715,000 viewers.

The main card averaged 11,804 viewers via streaming services.

By contrast, the Michigan vs. Indiana game did 2,273,000 viewers. The college football game was the lead-in for UFC and the second-most watched college game of the season on FS1. The game ended at 7:55 p.m. and the Fight Night coverage started at 8 p.m. The five-minute pre-fight show on FS1 did 1,168,000 viewers,  unreal numbers for a pre-fight show.

The prelims and the beginning of the main card went against college football on ABC, FOX, ESPN, and ESPN 2. ABC’s Cincinnati vs. UCF game lead the night with 3,098,000 viewers.

Rising UFC Light Heavyweight Apparently Endorses Growth Hormone Online

Rising UFC light heavyweight prospect apparently endorses a banned growth hormone by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

It looks like a rising UFC light heavyweight prospect made a big mistake earlier this year.

When looking back at 205-pound competitor Johnny Walker’s Instagram account, a post was made back in April endorsing a performance-enhancing drug known as Mk-677 (ibutamoren). Mk-677 is one of the banned substances by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), who handles the drug testing of UFC fighters. Check out a screenshot of the post here:

Recently, Walker picked up a knockout win over Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC Argentina, which also earned him a Performance Of The Night bonus. Under the WADA prohibited list, Ibutamoren is banned as a non-specified substance. It’s listed under Section 2 Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances, and Mimetics.

The default sanction of a two-year suspension is given to a fighter who tests positive for the substance under the UFC’s anti-doping program. The use of ibutamoren has been linked to muscle growth and increased recovery, however, the experimental drug is not approved by the FDA at this time.

Walker could find himself in trouble with USADA if the anti-doping agency decides to look into the light heavyweight’s affiliation with the growth hormone after his Instagram post has come back to haunt him.
