The Brazilian crowds are going to expect more than a few tough bouts at UFC Fight Night 106 in Fortaleza. Apart from the main event featuring welterweight import Kelvin Gastelum and fomer UFC champion Vitor Belfort the light heavyweight bout between Gian Villante and Mauricio Rua and another in the lightweight in which Beneil Dariush is pitted against Edson Barboza.

Gian Villante (15-7) vs. Mauricio Rua (24-10)

Rua enters the ring after back to back wins against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Corey Anderson. Rua made a great start to his career in combat sports but is now kind of had his enthusiasm mellowed down. His opponent, Villante too isn’t too much of a threat since he failed to gain any momentum and hasn’t been able to hit the top 10. Talent and skill isn’t his style. He has won most of his bouts through sheer toughness and courage. However, a seasoned fighter like Rua does have the upper hand in what could be a technical knockout.

Beneil Dariush (14-2) vs. Edson Barboza (18-4)

Fans of UFC must have noticed how Edson Barboza  gets so close yet so far from title contention especially in fights against Donald Cerrone and Tony Ferguson. Dariush should be a tough opponent since he is sure to bring out his grappling skills like he did against James Vick. Barboza is likely to do what he does best and that is keep circling and get in a few stunning leg kicks. If Dariush is mentally prepared for the initial onslaught from the Brazilian then he could make it a close fight. Nevertheless, we expect a unanimous decision in favor of Barboza.

UFC Fight Night Fortaleza, Brazil May Produce Mixed Results

Brazilians seem to be the main entrants at UFC Fight Night in Fortaleza, Brazil on Saturday night. And that’s not surprising given the impetus to draw big home crowds. However, odds-makers believe it is going to be a mixed night for the locals. Vitor Belfort vs. Kelvin Gastelum The main event features former light heavyweight […]

Kelvin Gastelum
The main event features former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort versus Kelvin Gastelum, which everyone hopes will be a cracker of a fight. Bookies believe that Belfort (+353) could go down to Gastelum (-425). However, the crowds may cheer up in the co-main event where Mauricio Rua (-135) may get the better of Gian Villante (+124).Belfort’s odds continue to grow to over +300 from an initial +235 as money continues to pour in on Kelvin Gastelum who had a great fight at UFC 206 versus Tim Kennedy.
Kevin Lee vs. Francisco Trinaldo
It is important to note that the former TUF Brazilian veteran Francisco Trinaldo has 7 wins to his credit since September 2014, which is one of the longest winning streaks. His last outing in September last year resulted in a resounding victory over Paul Felder. One the other hand Lee pulled off a good fight against Magomed Mustafaev last November at UFC Belfast. Currently, punters seem to be in favor of Lee who is now a -175 favorite and don’t seem to take into account Trinaldo’s winning streak.

UFC Fight Night 208: Travis Browne Vs. Derrick Lewis

2014 is when Travis Browne’s career hit the pause button after his loss to Fabricio Werdum in a top contender bout and Browne has not been able to find the resume button since, despite his efforts and time with Edmond Tarverdyan. However, statistically speaking, one could argue that Browne has only lost to fighters who […]

2014 is when Travis Browne’s career hit the pause button after his loss to Fabricio Werdum in a top contender bout and Browne has not been able to find the resume button since, despite his efforts and time with Edmond Tarverdyan. However, statistically speaking, one could argue that Browne has only lost to fighters who were ex heavy weight champions and that is a fair, valid point.

However, that stat could soon be a thing of the past if Browne does not emerge victorious against Derrick Lewis. Lewis Might not be a former heavy weight champion, but he certainly can put up an impressive fight. It has to be conceded that Lewis’ career did not really start of as smoothly as he would have hoped (two brutal knock outs in his first four fights) but things have looked up since then.

UFC 192 is where Lewis took charge and since consecutively won five fights while fighting worthy opponents each time. Lewis’ forte are his agile hands and sheer strength and he will be hungry to come away with a victory against Browne which will really be the icing on the cake for his winning run so far.

Browne, in his own regard, has a long reach and his strikes generate a tremendous amount of force. He does have a few tricks up his sleeve especially when dealing with not so technically sound opponents such as Lewis.

Paul Felder Vs. Gibert Burns

It is almost difficult to believe that there was once a time when Gilbert Burns was talked of as a prospect that was regarded as a must – see and was said to have jaw dropping potential. Gone are those days, Burns is now just another middling lightweight fighter in the eyes of the UFC. Burns, come UFC fight night 208, will take on Paul Felder and is going in as the underdog. How will this fight or its outcome effect the dynamics and flow of future fights? Well, this is one of those fights which honestly is just being fought for the sake of it and may not do much apart from possibly further shortening his career.

Nik Lentz Vs. Islam Makhachev

Islam Makhachev is not favored here at all, but anything is possible in the UFC. Makhachev will mostly be looking to survive as many bouts as he can and creep in with a finishing submission when Lentz least expects it. The odds of that happening though, are not great. Lentz is still the topi cof discussion when it comes to whether or not he fits into the lightweight division. The outcome of this fight will do very little answer that question though.

Ian McCall Vs. Neil Seery

McCall’s career so far in the UFC has been injury ridden, but for once he looks to be in good shape and is taking on Neil Seery who is not really a much of challenge for him and McCall should have no issues putting this one to bed.

UFC Fight Night 208: Predictions Part 3

Wilson Reis Vs. Wilson Reis Vs. Ulka Sasaki

Upon cursory look, it may seem like the universe has cut some Wilson Reis some slack considering that his original opponent was none other than the formidable Demetrious Johnson, but Johnson picked up an injury and that fight had to go down the drain for the time being. However, this does not mean that Reis will not get any action. He is now rescheduled to fight Ulka Sasaki who is a Japanese mixed martial artist. Sasaki may not be on the same level as Demetrious Johnson but the 125 lb fighter who went pro back in 2010 is also capable of actually taking down Reis. Taking a look at Sasaki’s mixed martial record across all stages, he has a total of 24 fights under his belt of which he has managed to clinch 19 wins. He even has 2 knockouts to his name and you can rest assured that he is going to Reis a run for his money.

Phillipe Nover Vs. Rick Glenn

Rick Glenn is an ex WSOF featherweight champion and he came out the worst when he faced off against Evan Dunham, but Glenn now gets a chance to prove his mettle in his preferred 145 lbs weight division where he will take on Phillipe Nover, who in comparison to Dunham, is docile and might just be the perfect prey for Glenn to take advantage of and gain back his confidence.

UFC 208 Predictions – Part 2

Dustin Poirier Vs. Jim Miller Poirier was on a dream run in the 155 pounds category, but sadly for him, that run came to a screeching and devastating halt when he came up against Michael Johnson who completely outclassed him in all aspects. Poirier now gets a chance to get back up on his two […]

Dustin Poirier Vs. Jim Miller

Poirier was on a dream run in the 155 pounds category, but sadly for him, that run came to a screeching and devastating halt when he came up against Michael Johnson who completely outclassed him in all aspects. Poirier now gets a chance to get back up on his two feet when he faces the surging Jim Miller in UFC 208. Miller himself will also find himself in a similar boat where he will be looking to make a rebound after his rather poor 2014 – 2015 season where he dropped 1-4.

This fight will really provide an insight into whether or not he can make a Andrei Arlovski-esque come back. How will it all play out? We will just have to wait and watch.

Ryan LaFlare Vs. Roan Carniero

Both these guys at one point in time had their names in up in shining lights in the welter-weight division, but it is safe to say that those days are long gone. Are they just not in their prime anymore? Or are things not clicking for them? Well, it looks like one of them will catch a break when they face each other come UFC fight night 208.

LaFlare has been coming up against opponents who, with all due respect to Carniero, are generally regarded a stiffer challenge than what Carniero puts up. This will be LaFlare’s best chance to get back to winning ways.

However, technically speaking, Carniero is still a better finisher amongst the two and he certainly knows how to put a fight to bed. However, we still think that LaFlare has the upper edge when overall conditioning is considered and he might take this one home in a decision victory. What is your bet?
