Randa Markos says she could not be tested for COVID-19 despite feeling ill on her way back from fighting at UFC Brasilia.

The Canadian strawweight lost by decision to Amanda Ribas in the closed-door UFC Brasilia. Although the fight was tough, Markos reveals she is now self-quarantining herself due to feeling sick.

“Just made it home. Stopped by the coronavirus testing center and they wouldn’t test me. Long flights with a lot of people, not feeling great and I’m not a risk? Okay I guess I’ll be home for two weeks,” Markos tweeted.

The strawweight then followed it up with another tweet saying she just wants to be safe. Yet, she won’t be able to know if she has contracted COVID-19.

“I just want to be safe. Things were way different from when I left to when I came back from the fights. New changes every hour,” she added.

This is no doubt an interesting time for not just fighters but everyone in the world. The World Health Organization has declared this a global pandemic and cities and countries are in lockdown to try and prevent the spread.

UFC President, Dana White was even forced to postpone the next three events with the status fo UFC 249 up in the air. Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father said he believes Dubai would be a good place to host the fight. But, whether we will see any sports for the next several weeks and months is unknown at this time.

For Randa Markos, the loss to Ribas has made her 10-8-1 as a pro. The Canadian has also alternated wins and losses since her third professional fight with one draw mixed in. In the UFC she is 6-7-1 with notable wins over Angela Hill, Ashley Yoder, and Carla Esparza. She’s currently not ranked in the top-15 at strawweight.

What do you make of Randa Markos having to be forced to go into self-quarantine?

Charles Oliveira and Gilbert Burns made big moves in the UFC rankings.

Oliveira defeated Kevin Lee via third-round submission in the main event of UFC Brasilia this past weekend. It made it seven wins in a row for “Do Bronx” and his reward was being installed into the top 10 of the lightweight rankings.

The Brazilian is now ranked No. 8 at 155 pounds as he jumped up five places. He is behind Paul Felder at No. 7 who notably defeated him when they met back in 2017.

Burns also moved into the top 10.

“Durinho” earned the biggest win of his career when he defeated Demian Maia via first-round TKO in the co-main event of UFC Brasilia. It made it three wins in a row since returning to the 170-pound division last year while he has also won seven of his last eight outings.

As a result, he has climbed up six places in the welterweight rankings to sit at No. 6 just behind former title challenger Stephen Thompson who is at No. 5.

Burns tweeted about the rankings on Tuesday:

It turns out the coronavirus pandemic didn’t lead to more eyeballs for UFC Brasilia.

UFC Brasilia took place this past weekend with no fans in attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic. Regardless, it was a card stacked with fun fights with the headliner being a lightweight bout between Kevin Lee and Charles Oliveira.

Given that sports leagues around the world had been suspended, there was a belief that there would be more viewers tuning into the event.

That wasn’t the case according to the reported numbers, however.

“UFC Brasilia card ratings on ESPN – average of 672,000 viewers. Lowest number of UFC on ESPN era – also streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on ESPN Deportes.”

For context, the UFC 240 prelims did 722,000 viewers on ESPN last summer.

The time slot for the event certainly may have played a role as the main card began at 6 p.m. E.T. However, those are still disappointing numbers and begs the question as to whether there was a need to go ahead with the event anyway.

What do you make of the low numbers for UFC Brasilia? Was it because of the time slot or lack of big names? Or do you think there simply wasn’t enough demand during the pandemic?

Iaquinta Lee

It appears Al Iaquinta and Kevin Lee’s rivalry is still alive and well.

Lee suffered a third-round submission defeat to Charles Oliveira in the UFC Brasilia main event last night. Lee notably held on to Oliveira after tapping and appeared to deny that he tapped as well which drew ridicule from many in the combat sport world, including Jorge Masvidal.

Having suffered his third loss in his last four outings, Lee revealed afterwards that it may be some time before fans get to see him back in action.

Iaquinta took the opportunity to let his thoughts be known on that decision.

“Thank god,” he tweeted.

As fans responded to Iaquinta, he continued to mock Lee, particularly for missing weight:

“Riiiight?! Talks a big game, misses weight then disrespects his own Tap!!! Such a fake person.”

“Miss weight then act like you didn’t tap he should quit forever this ain’t for him… fake as fake gets.”

“He ain’t a fighter he’s a phony.”

Although Iaquinta is currently on a two-fight losing streak, he has defeated Lee twice in the UFC with their most recent outing back in December 2018.

And given these tweets, it seems they still don’t see eye-to-eye.
