Most of the hype may have been centered on the Stephen Thompson vs. Rory MacDonald main event at last night’s (Sat., June 18, 2016) UFC Fight Night 89 from the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, but it was the light heavyweight bout between Canadian home favorite Steve Bosse and Sean O’Connell that stole the show.

The action-packed fight deservedly took home “Fight of the Night” honors in the UFC’s Ottawa debut after Bosse and O’Connell threw down in an absolute war. First it was O’Connell who smelled blood, as he floored an over-aggressive Bosse with a flurry of powerful left hooks early, appearing to nearly have the former professional hockey player knocked out.

But the tough Montreal-based fighter somehow persevered, and he put on a show for his Canadian fans in the second round, dropping O’Connell and pouring on an endless barrage of ground strikes. The third round continued to deliver hard-hitting, pulse-pounding action despite both fighters being exhausted, and both men had their moments.

It was capped off by O’Connell beckoning Bosse to stand toe-to-toe with him and slug out the final 10 seconds. Not surprisingly, Bosse happily obliged, and he ultimately took home a big decision win close to home. Check out the full fight video highlights of one of the best fights of the year right here:

Fan favorite No. 4-ranked lightweight Donald Cerrone was looking for his second straight win at 170 pounds when he met quietly surging Canadian veteran Patrick Cote in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., June 18, 2016) UFC Fight Night 89 from the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

And “Cowboy” got just that, picking up a decision third-round TKO finish after a dominant overall showing against the normally iron-chinned “Predator” in his home country. Cerrone used some improved offensive wrestling to ground Cote early on, and in the second and third rounds he used stalking Muay Thai to batter the Montreal native with low kicks and viciously precise power punches that ultimately spelled the end of the fight.

It was a statement bout for Cerrone, whose fighting future remains a bit uncertain in terms of weight classes. But with two straight finishes at 170 pounds, “Cowboy” called out for “one of the 36 fights” at July 9’s UFC 200 in 21 days. It’ll be tough to deny him that spot.

In the meantime, watch the full fight video highlights of his dominant win over Cote here:

High stakes were up for grabs when Stephen Thompson met Rory MacDonald in the main event of last night’s (Sat., June 18, 2016) UFC Fight Night 89 from the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

MMA fans everywhere were expecting the world out of “Wonderboy,” who had the momentum of two straight first round knockouts over Johny Hendricks and Jake Ellenberger. The pressure was also heavy on MacDonald’s shoulders in the UFC’s debut in Ottawa, as he was returning from the badly broken nose he suffered in his historic fifth-round loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 over 11 months ago.

The headliner may not have been the all-out explosive war that fans had hoped for, but in the end, the fight ended up a technically sound, hard-fought war by both fighters, with Thompson taking home a well-deserved unanimous decision on the strength of his superior volume and activity.

After the win, Thompson called out for a title shot against the winner of Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley in the main event of July 30’s UFC 201, and with seven straight victories, it’s tough to deny him.
