Mikey Musumeci Explains Why he Left ONE for the UFC

Darth Rigatoni’ Mikey Musumeci was a fan favorite in ONE Championship and a reigning titleholder in their submission grappling division. The American-Italian grappler walked away from ONE and signed with the UFC.

Mikey Musumeci

It is an interesting signing as Mikey Musumeci does not currently compete in MMA, but the UFC also does not have a submission grappling division. Thus, it may be an indication for the future that the UFC is looking at expanding into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions.

Musumeci was scheduled to face fellow grappler Kade Ruotolo in a BJJ match but Ruotolo suffered an injury and had to withdraw. ‘Darth Rigatoni’ was then rebooked but at a much lower weight and was forced to cut nearly 30 pounds in just a few days which led to illness. He was unable to make weight and was hospitalized. To add insult to injury, Mikey Musumeci was also stripped of his title due to this incident.

Mikey Musumeci Leaving ONE Championship

Recent news has come out that Mikey Musumeci left ONE Championship and has signed with the UFC. He will be competing at the UFC Fight Pass Invitational 9 grappling event on December 5 against Felipe Machado. The event will be hosted at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Mikey Musumeci

Speaking in an interview with Ariel Helwani, Mikey Musumeci explained why he left ONE. He said:

“My contract was coming to an end, basically. I just wanted to be back home in the U.S. Again, I love ONE Championship, but I was there because of my relationship with Chatri. He was like a parent to me. He was probably my closest friend for a few years, and that’s why I moved to Asia. Then I decided I wanted to be back in the U.S., close to my family. The UFC is 10 to 15 minutes from my house, so it’s a no-brainer for me, especially being American. I also feel the UFC can bring a lot to grappling. It’s finally another platform that can expand our sport to people who wouldn’t typically watch jiu-jitsu.

“It’s a platform that will eventually have drug testing, a platform that can make our sport professional. Right now, there’s too much with steroids and craziness. I just want a legitimate, professional platform for athletes. For kids growing up, they can dream of being professional jiu-jitsu athletes without thinking about switching careers. The most fulfillment I can have as a person is setting that path for the next generation.

“I have no hard feelings toward ONE. How could I? They helped me grow so much as a person. I’m full of gratitude for Chatri. We were like a dysfunctional family sometimes—disagreements, fights—but at the end of the day, I’m grateful for everything he’s done for me. I’d never speak badly about him.”

On Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu promoters as a whole, he added:

Of course. I’ll just say broadly—there’s a lot of shadiness and shady promoters who do messed-up things behind the scenes.

“Being in it for so many years, you get burnt out. It doesn’t feel legitimate or professional. You make money here and there, but then a shady arms dealer promotes an event, and suddenly they have money. You make money once, and then it disappears. Is this what we want for the next generation? No. We need a legitimate organization, like MLB, NBA, or NFL, where we don’t have to question if they’ll have money a year from now.

Mikey Musumeci Explains UFC Signing

A BJJ athlete has never signed a contract with the UFC just to do submission grappling, but Mikey Musumeci has done exactly that. Being friends and meeting Hunter Campbell at the UFC Performance Institute helped this expansion. On why this happened, he explained:

During that time, I trained in Vegas and was at UFC PI a lot. I met Hunter there; we became good friends, and that’s how the relationship started … They’re trying to take over jiu-jitsu like they did MMA. Their goal is to grow the sport exponentially—grappling leagues, everything.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace ‘Darth Rigatoni’ Mikey Musumeci may be the start of the UFC’s expansion into the submission grappling world.

Conor McGregor is once again suggesting his return to the Octagon will go down on December 16 when the UFC closes out its pay-per-view schedule in Las Vegas.

Over the last several months, the Irishman has remained adamant that he would be making a comeback at UFC 296 for his long-awaited scrap with lightweight fan favorite ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler. This is despite the fact that McGregor has still not re-enrolled in the USADA testing pool for a required six months of pre-fight screening.

Recently, Dana White and McGregor himself seemingly returned to reality, acknowledging that the fight would likely be pushed back to early 2024. No official reason was given for the delay, but the former two-division champ composed a series of voice notes on X (formerly Twitter) that appeared to blame the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Well, now another monkey wrench has been thrown in the works courtesy of a social media post by Conor McGregor. On August 27, the Irishman posted an image on X that appears to be a countdown clock for UFC 296 on the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass. Interestingly, the event is titled UFC 296: Chandler vs. McGregor.

Is Conor McGregor’s December Return Reveal for Real?

In another shocking turn of events, the post is still present on Conor McGregor’s feed more than 24 hours later. A true accomplishment for the notorious tweeter and deleter.

Of course, everyone should take this potential reveal with a very fine grain of salt. Until the UFC makes an official announcement, nothing surrounding Conor McGregor’s return is certain. But it’s safe to say that should this prove to be true, McGregor and company will have a lot of explaining to do regarding the Irishman’s current USADA status.

Do you believe Conor McGregor will be back in the Octagon this December, or is this just another eye-catching post from a master manipulator?

UFC Fight Pass has just added another great mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion to their lineup.

It has been announced that Chinese-based MMA promotion JCK MMA has inked a multi-event broadcast deal with UFC Fight Pass. Their next event will be streamed live on the subscription service, which will go down on June 4 at 7 PM in China, which will be 7AM in the United States ET.

Tapology reports that the event’s main event will be a flyweight contest between Yin Shuai and Li Peng. JCK MMA is a relatively young promotion, which was founded in 2020. They have put on over 340 individual bouts spanning over 51 events.

The promotion operates in a tournament-styles format, which is broken up into seasons. Fighters are guaranteed five fighters per season to determine rankings.

Director of international development at JCK MMA, Joe Qiaobo, commented on the new deal with Fight Pass.

“It’s a historical moment for JCK MMA to be the first-ever Chinese promotion on UFC Fight Pass,” said Qiaobo.

“This partnership showcases JCK in front of a global audience. We are proud to have JCK represent Chinese MMA on a world stage.”

The promotion’s upcoming season will feature 38 fighters from various weight classes competing.

Recently added weight classes that have been added include a women’s strawweight division and three new men’s divisions; middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight.

In the season finale, winning fighters will receive a prize of 1 million RMB (about 150,000 USD).

Former Bellator competitor and current JCK commentator Vaughn Anderson spoke to RADII about what fight fans can expect from the young promotion.

“The focus of athletics in China is often immediately as a career path. This same mentality that brings China so much Olympic success also propels combat sports talent up the ladder quickly,” said Anderson.

“JCK showcases top new blood, well-trained, well-rounded, well-conditioned — all gunning for that huge payoff and glory JCK offers to every division winner every year.”

Several participating fighters in the upcoming season are current UFC Academy athletes; such as Shang Zhifa, E Yong, Zhu Kangjie, Cui Liucai, Jiniushiyue, and Taiyilake.

Previous seasons have also featured UFC Academy alumni, such as Shayilan Nuerdanbieke, who now competes in the UFC.

Flyweight Josh Van picked up his fifth pro victory with a rarely seen calf slicer submission on the main card of Fury FC 62.

Matched up with Mario Suazo, Van largely had his way with the Denver native on the feet before locking up the submission to finish the fight late in the second round.

Finishing a professional MMA bout via calf slicer isn’t something you see every day; Brett Johns memorably finished Joe Soto with just the second calf slicer in UFC history back in 2017. This win also marks Van’s first career submission victory.

The 20-year old Van has spent the entirety of his amateur and pro careers competing for Fury FC. He’s been on a torrid pace since turning pro in October 2021 and is already 5-1, with all of his wins coming via stoppage.

Van’s win wasn’t the only submission on the Fury FC 62 main card, although it was arguably the most impressive. Later on the card Adam Martinez finished Leonard Carvalho with an anaconda choke in the first round, and in the main event Austin Jones locked up a third-round triangle choke against Armus Guyton to close out the fight card in Castle Rock, Colorado.

What’s your reaction to Josh Van’s calf slicer submission?

UFC women’s flyweight competitor Paige VanZant is set to make her commentary debut on UFC Fight Pass.

VanZant, who turned 25 this week, will serve as color commentator for all upcoming M-1 Global events in the United States. She’ll be joined in the commentary booth by ex-Bellator play-by-play voice Sean Wheelock. VanZant had this to say about the opportunity (via MMA Junkie):

“I’m really excited for this opportunity to work as the color commentator for M-1 Global USA on UFC Fight Pass,” VanZant said. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to showcase my skills on the other side of the microphone.”

Her first event as a commentator will take place at the Pipa Event Center at Quechan Casino Resort on the Arizona/California border in Winterhaven, California. The show is titled “Road to M-1: USA 2” and will stream on UFC Fight Pass.

VanZant hasn’t fought since her January submission victory over Rachael Ostovich at UFC on ESPN+ 1 in Brooklyn, New York. The victory was a hard-fought, come-from-behind win due to VanZant’s heart and toughness. She rebounded well after a down streak in prior years. VanZant remains one of the most popular UFC fighters due to her appearances on multiple mainstream TV shows.

She’s back on track in the Octagon, a welcome site because she’s dealt with serious injuries as of late. Now, she’s branching out into commentary and will therefore increase her scope of attention. VanZant is proving she’s a woman of many talents, and that seems to be increasing by the day.
