No. 2-ranked UFC light heavyweight contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson has fought for the UFC 205-pound strap twice, first at UFC at UFC 165 in 2013 against Jon Jones and second at UFC 192 against Daniel Cormier. In both fights, Gustafsson pushed his opponents to their limits, but he ultimately came up short on both occasions.

Prior to his split-decision loss to Cormier, “The Mauler” was steamrolled by No. 1-ranked Anthony Johnson in his home of Sweden which was unsurprisingly a tough loss to swallow. In fact, he was questioning his fighting future in the aftermath of the bout.

After 11 months away from the cage, Gustafsson is scheduled to return against Jan Blachowicz at tomorrow’s (Sat., September 3, 2016) UFC Fight Night 93 from Hamburg, Germany, and he claims that he never lost motivation in his craft:

“I never lost my motivation,” Gustafsson (16-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) told MMAjunkie on Thursday. “I don’t know why people are telling me that – like, oh, he’s going to quit.

“I just had two losses. I lost my fight just on the finish line with (Cormier). People cry. It’s a good blow, and it hits you hard, and people don’t understand the feeling or the thoughts you have in your mind when you’re training so hard for something and you lose it just on very small details. People don’t understand that.”

While he did admit that his motivation may have received a setback, “The Mauler” confirmed that fighting is his true passion:

“You say stuff, and people (say), ‘Oh, he’s going to quit.’ No,” Gustaffson said. “You don’t get it, man. You haven’t been in those shoes; you have no idea how it feels. So for me, of course, motivation gets a setback. But this is what I love to do.”

Do you expect Gustafsson to bounce back tomorrow?

Josh Barnett: Andrei Arlovski Is ‘Not Going To Be Good Enough’

Two former UFC heavyweight champions are set to do battle in the main event of this weekend’s (September 3, 2016) UFC Fight Night 93 from Hamburg, Germany as No. 6-ranked Andrei “Pitbull” Arlovski will take on No. 9-ranked Josh “Warmaster” Barnett. Both men have struggled as of late, but Barnett appears to be quite confident heading into the bout.

Despite the “Pitbull’s” previous accomplishments, the “Warmaster” simply feels as if Arlovski won’t be ‘good enough’ to beat him this weekend on FOX Sports 1:

“He’s done so much over so long of a career and everybody has witnessed his talent time and again. But, I’d like to think that whatever he possess now is not going to be good enough. And to say that whatever he had then was never going to be good enough. But, I have to go out there and implement my will upon him.” Barnett said on The MMA Hour earlier this week.

Although his confidence is sky high, Barnett isn’t over looking Arlovski, who has suffered back-to-back losses in his last two bouts. In fact, the “Warmaster” labeled his Belarusian opponent as a ‘cornered animal’:

“But, knowing how tough Andrei Arlovski is meant that I had to train incredibly hard, I had to keep a lot of things in mind while I was training to perfect my approach for this fight. He is not someone to take lightly and he isn’t somebody to underestimate. I have ultimate faith in who I am and in what I possess to go into that cage. Knowing that, it doesn’t diminish the fact of how dangerous of an opponent of how Andrei Arlovski is. He’s coming off of two loses, but like people always say, it’s like a cornered animal.”

Barnett is also coming off of a loss to Ben Rothwell meaning both men will be looking to bounce back when the Octagon door closes in Hamburg.

It’s been eight months since former title-challenger and No. 4-ranked light heavyweight in the world Alexander Gustafsson has competed inside of the UFC’s Octagon, and according to a local Swedish report, it may not be too long before we see him back again.

According to the source Gustafsson is targeted to take on Jan Blachowicz in the UFC’s Hamburg event this September.

Gustafsson (16-4) is on an incredibly disappointing two-fight losing skid after dropping a split decision title-bout to current 205-pound king Daniel Cormier, in their incredible five round war at UFC 192 this past October.

road to the octagon

Blachowicz (19-5) comes fresh off of a unanimous decision victory  over Igor Pokrajac at UFC Fight Night 86 in April, following a two fight losing streak to the likes of Jimi Manuwa and Corey Anderson over the span of a year. A bout between Gustafsson and Blachowicz has yet to be confirmed, however, stick with LowKick for the latest on ‘The Mauler’s’ return and this bout’s possible confirmation.

UFC Fight Night 93 goes down live from Hamburg, Germany on FS1, live from the Barclaycard Arena on September 3, 2016. The event is headlined by a heavyweight clash between No. 6-ranked heavyweight Andrei Arlovski and No. 9-ranked Josh Barnett.

Alexander Gustafsson

Gustafsson came tantalisingly close to defeating Jon Jones back when ‘Bones’ was the undisputed champion of the 205-pound division. That was at UFC 165 in 2013, a veritable lifetime ago in terms of MMA years. Many still feel that five round war was the greatest light-heavyweight title fight in the promotion’s history, and there are those who still argue that ‘The Mauler’ should have got the nod from the judges.

The reported bout with Blachowicz would certainly serve as a good litmus test for where Gus’ future is headed, and it would be great to see Gustafsson back after nearly a full year out of action.

UPDATE!

Gustafsson took to Instagram this morning to announce the fight with ‘JB,’ here it is:

It's on. Cant wait to fight my Polish friend @janblachowicz at @ufc Hamburg.
