Tomorrow night (Sat. August 3, 2019) UFC Newark will be headlined by a welterweight matchup between Robbie Lawler and Colby Covington.

The action goes down from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Covington and Lawler are former teammates from American Top Team (ATT). “Chaos” seems to hold some animosity over the way Lawler departed from the gym. Now, they’ll settle their differences inside the Octagon tomorrow night.

Speaking to UFC.com, Lawler discussed bouncing back from his upsetting defeat to Ben Askren earlier this summer. Unfortunately, Lawler did not receive an immediate rematch after the controversial submission loss to “Funky,” but he seems to have moved past that.

“The Ben Askren fight happened the way it happened and showed me where I needed to be; showed me where I was and where I wanted to go,” said Lawler. “I just got back in the gym and started working on things to fine tune and get better.”

As for how the fight between Covington and Lawler came together, the former welterweight champion claims things simply “fell into place.”

“They asked me, I talked to my coaches and my manager — I was already in pretty good shape, it was five weeks out, but it all worked out,” Lawler added. “It’s a big fight against an interim titleholder and it kind of all fell into place.”

What do you think about the matchup between Lawler and Covington?

Colby Covington has been talking a lot about Robbie Lawler ahead of their UFC Newark headliner and continued to do so during their faceoff.

The pair face collide on Saturday and in the buildup to the event, Covington has been talking trash about Lawler — in particular, the reason why he left American Top Team. To his credit, Lawler hasn’t really responded to those comments, instead choosing to focus on the task at hand.

And after both fighters made the weight, they finally met face to face. Covington continued to jaw off during the staredown while Lawler just kept staring at him emotionless. You can see the video below:

Do you think Covington will come out on top and challenge Kamaru Usman next? Or do you think Lawler will shut “Chaos” up and add another twist to the welterweight title picture?

UFC is back on big ESPN this Saturday for UFC Newark. The main event is no doubt an interesting bout as Colby Covington takes on Robbie Lawler. Yet, after that, the card is lacking big names, and former UFC fighter, Brendan Schaub agrees.

“This weekend’s fights, I couldn’t tell you who’s on them,” Schaub said on his Below The Belt podcast (transcript via MMA News). “I don’t know. I know the main event, other than that I don’t know who the f*ck is on it. I know four people on the main card of this UFC.

“This weekend I’m in Nashville,” he added later. “I think my Saturday show’s sold out. That’s how sh*tty this card is. So it’s like who’s watching it? I don’t know man. But these fights are so bad.”

Although he thinks this Saturday’s card is bad, he is looking forward to an upcoming card.

“Dude these cards are … this is what you get man,” he said. “But then that Aug. 17 [card] in Anaheim, ‘DC’ [vs. Miocic 2], stacked.”
