Here’s what Covington had to say, per ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

“Let’s talk about a lesson, Robbie Lawler should have learned from Matt Hughes. Get off the tracks when the train is coming.”

Hughes, a noted supporter of Lawler in the past, took to Instagram to respond to Covington’s comments. Here’s what he had to say.

“Not sure if @colbycovmma should have use my accident as fuel for his post-fight trash talk, but that was one heck of a fight. Nice win for @americantopteam, and @ruthless_rl always puts on a good fight. Reminder though, this is the fighting world. People trash talk and you gotta have thick skin”

Aside from his controversial comments on Hughes, Covington is now expected to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title next. The pair actually had a heated exchange on the ESPN+ post-fight show.

Earlier tonight (Sat. August 3, 2019) Robbie Lawler was defeated in the main event of UFC Newark.

“Ruthless” was bested by Colby Covington over the course of five rounds with a relentless pressure of both wrestling and striking. Now, Covington will likely challenge Kamaru Usman next for the welterweight championship. After the UFC Newark event, Lawler spoke to reporters to discuss the bout.

He was looking really banged up after the contest. Check out a photo here:

Lawler is on a three-fight losing streak at the moment to names such as Rafael dos Anjos, Ben Askren, and now Covington. As for “Chaos,” he is now the likely next challenger for Kamaru Usman’s welterweight championship. In fact, they came face-to-face on the ESPN+ post-fight show, and things got heated.

Covington is on a seven-fight win streak at the moment and is a former interim 170-pound champion. He is hoping to hand Usman the first loss of his UFC tenure. “The Nigerian Nightmare’s” last outing resulted in a title victory after he dominated Tyron Woodley for five rounds at UFC 235 in March. Both men have fairly similar styles, so it will be interesting to see how things play out between them inside the Octagon.

Early on the ESPN preliminary card, flyweight Matt Schnell pulled off a beautiful first-round triangle choke submission win. He forced opponent Jordan Espinosa to tap out in just over a minute. His quick win earned him a $50,000 Performance Of The Night bonus.

Immediately after Schnell’s win, women’s flyweights Antonina Shevchenko and Lucie Pudilová did battle inside the Octagon. Both women left it all inside the cage and put on an extremely entertaining scrap. However, it was Shevchenko who locked in the rear-naked choke in the second round, rendering Pudilová unconscious for the victory. Both women will take home a $50,000 Fight Of The Night bonus for an awesome contest.

And finally, lightweight Nasrat Haqparast emerged victorious from his main card fight against Joaquim Silva after a stunning second-round knockout shot 30 seconds in. Haqparast was flanked by legendary welterweight Georges St-Pierre in his corner. He will also be seeing a $50,000 Performance Of The Night bonus.

Colby Covington is one of the mixed martial arts (MMA) world’s most controversial figures.

He didn’t disappoint when on the microphone after his UFC Newark main event win over Robbie Lawler earlier today (Sat. August 3, 2019). Covington took a shot at UFC Hall Of Famer and former welterweight champ Matt Hughes’ recent train accident, in which he was struck by a train while crossing the tracks in his truck. Here’s what he had to say, per ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

“Let’s talk about a lesson, Robbie Lawler should have learned from Matt Hughes. Get off the tracks when the train is coming.”

In June of 2017 Hughes was struck by a train while driving in his hometown in Montgomery County, Illinois. Miraculously, he had no broken bones or internal injuries but was unconscious and unresponsive for some time. Hughes eventually recovered from the accident but now has trouble speaking. Earlier this year, Hughes was hit with domestic violence allegations by his wife and was also given a restraining order by his brother.

As for Covington, he is now on a seven-fight win streak inside the Octagon. “Chaos’” latest victory has likely solidified him as the next challenger for Kamaru Usman’s welterweight throne. It will be interesting to see how the two high-level wrestlers match up against each other inside the cage.
