UFC lightweight veteran Clay Guida has recalled his first foray into mixed martial arts, a story that includes a strip club and a first-round submission loss.

Guida, who was the inaugural Strikeforce lightweight champion, has been a mainstay in MMA’s premier promotion since his Octagon debut in 2006. Since his UFC signing, “The Carpenter” has made the walk 32 times.

Despite turning 40 last December, Guida is still going strong and believes he’s as motivated and active as ever. He’ll look to prove that at UFC Vegas 52 this weekend, where he’ll take on a man 15 years his junior in Claudio Puelles in the co-main event.

Like most who began their careers early in the sport’s development, Guida had his fair share of unsanctioned bouts and fights in bizarre locations. During a recent interview with UFC play-by-play announcer Brendan Fitzgerald, the Illinois native recalled his very first taste of MMA.

When the sentence “It all started in a strip club” is said, you know an interesting story is set to follow…

“Some could say (I started in) MMA by accident. It all started in a gentlemen’s club, it all started in a strip club in the middle of central Illinois back in 2003,” said Guida. “So my brother was making his pro debut. A couple weeks before that I was living on a fishing boat. I was working out in Alaska… I’m getting letters from my mom and dad. My ma’s like, ‘Listen, your brother’s doing this NHB stuff,’ back in the day when it was called ‘no-holds barred.’

“I get back off the boat, I’m back in Illinois, and my brother is making his professional debut… Me and my buddies drove down to Ottawa, Illinois, cornfields everywhere, and all of a sudden—and it’s July, super hot out, all of a sudden we’re cruising by cornfields and we see this place,” continued Guida. “We roll up, we see a marquee out in the middle of this cornfield and this big pole barn that says in flashing lights, ‘The Silver Slipper Salon.’ You can only imagine what that was… We didn’t know what we were getting into, we didn’t know it was a gentlemen’s club.”

From there, Guida detailed the scenario that led to his debut. Bringing a whole new meaning to the term ‘short-notice fight’, the former collegiate wrestler swapped his beer for gloves and stepped forward as a same-day replacement.

“We see the boxing ring, they didn’t have a cage over there. The show was not sanctioned at all,” noted Guida. “We see the ring card girls, or working girls, whatever… In-between one of the fights, this guy gets on a megaphone, and he goes, ‘Yeah, we need an exhibition fill-in fight for a guy that just backed out. Anywhere from 155 to 175 pounds. You wanna get in a fight? Come on up to the head table and gives us your information.’

“I finished my beer, handed it to my buddy, I give my ticket to my other buddy, I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m doing that…’ I went up to the front desk, started filling out (the form), they’re like, ‘Who are you, young man?’ I’m like, ‘Ah, I’m Jason Guida’s little brother, he’s the main event, blah, blah, blah, I’m fighting tonight.’”

Considering his inexperience, beer-drinking, and strip club visit en route to the fight, Guida’s debut went just as you’d have expected.

Guida’s Rude MMA Awakening…

Opera News Detail
The Ultimate Warrior

After convincing his brother to allow him to compete, which came after some hilarious encouragement from his father, who wanted to see his son get his “ass kicked,” Guida entered the ring against a striker who boasted far more experience.

Quickly realizing the bout was a far cry from his wrestling wheelhouse, Guida was head-kicked and submitted before the fight could reach a second frame.

“I went out there and I literally looked like The Ultimate Warrior. That’s where it began man. The bell rang and this dude’s a striker. He was like 8-1 and had way more experience… We start going at it… I kick him right in the leg, like, ‘Yeah, this fighting stuff is easy.’ He moves around and pulled a Diego Sanchez man, he kicks me right in the mouth. I grabbed my mouth and my teeth and lip went numb.

“I shoot a blast double-leg on him, take him down, we’re rolling around scrambling, and he sweeps me. In wrestling… you go to your belly… (my brother and coaches) are yelling, ‘Go to your back!’ … This guy’s on my back, next thing you know, he puts in a rear-naked choke, taps me out.”

It’s perhaps safe to say that nobody in attendance that day would have predicted what was to come for Guida, who has since held championship gold in MMA and cemented a place inside the UFC Hall of Fame.

And if Guida is to be believed, his story is far from complete.

What’s your best memory from the ongoing career of Clay Guida?

Muhammad Mokaev managed to stop Cody Durden early in his UFC London debut with a guillotine

Muhammad Mokaev, an alum of Brave CF, successfully made his UFC debut back in March at The O2 Arean – opening the UFC London card with a dominant, quickfire guillotine win over Cody Durden.

31-year-old LFA flyweight champion, Johnson is undefeated in his last four consecutive outings, most recently defeating the then-undefeated Carlos Mota with a fifth round knockout back at LFA 122 in January of this year. ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto was first to report Mokaev’s return against Johnson this summer.

“21-year-old flyweight prospect Muhammad Mokaev (@muhammadmokaev) has booked his second appearance in the UFC, per sources,” Brett Okamoto tweeted. “Will meet LFA champ Charles Johnson (@InnerGMMA) on July 23. Super high on Mokaev. Big shot for Johnson to derail him in his UFC debut.”

6-0 as a professional, Mokaev, a decorated IMMAF (International Mixed Martial Arts Federation) gold medalist and veteran, enjoyed a storied, unbeaten amateur career prior to his professional bow back in August 2020.

Competing under the Brave CF banner in the Middle East on five separate occasions, Mokaev landed wins over Glenn McVeigh, Jamie Kelly, Abdul Hussein, and Bellator MMA alum, Blaine O’Driscoll before his March UFC bow.

Presenting a sizeable threat to Mokaev’s undefeated record on paper, Johnson, a trainee of Tiger Muay Thai boasts an 11-2 professional record. Prior to his above-mentioned success against Mota, Johnson defeated the trio of Joao Camillo, Yuma Horiuchi, and Karlee Pangilinan.

Joe Rogan wants UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman to get his shot against boxing world champion Canelo Álvarez.

Usman, the UFC’s top-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, has flirted with the idea of a crossover fight with Álvarez for several months now. Despite some questioning whether or not Usman was serious about his desires, he continues to tease the fight taking place eventually.

Álvarez’s team has responded to Usman’s callout with some mutual interest, but right now Canelo is focused on his May 7 fight against Dmitry Bivol. Canelo has won 15 fights since his first career loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

During a recent interview, Rogan made the case for a Usman vs. Álvarez super fight.

“I would like to see him fight Canelo, I really would,” Rogan said of Usman on the Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson podcast. “Not because I think that he’s a favorite in a boxing match against one of the greatest boxers of all-time, but I want to see him get a giant payday. The same way I would like to see [Francis] Ngannou fight Tyson Fury. That’s a way you can make a s***-load of money, and I don’t think it damages his potential as a UFC fighter. I think it would be invaluable experience for him, as a champion, if he did have that fight and then came back over to MMA. I think he’d probably be even better as a striker if he gets through it relatively undamaged, even if he loses.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Usman doesn’t have any professional boxing fights on his record but has shown a vastly improved standup game since earning the welterweight title. He has earned knockouts over the likes of Gilbert Burns, Jorge Masvidal, and Covington during his title reign.

One huge roadblock is Usman’s contract with the UFC, with president Dana White appearing uninterested in letting the 170lb champion bypass his contract for a fight with Álvarez. If Usman wants his wish granted, he’ll likely have to convince White and the UFC brass to allow him to pursue the opportunity.

How do you think a Kamaru Usman vs. Canelo Álvarez boxing match would play out?

Strickland Doubles Down On Criticisms Of ‘Sexual Predator’ Coaches

Sean Strickland has taken more shots at the coaches/significant others of Rose Namajunas and Aspen Ladd.

UFC women’s bantamweight Aspen Ladd’s relationship with her coach Jim West went under public scrutiny last year when West chewed out Ladd between rounds of her loss to Norma Dumont last year at UFC Vegas 40. His tone was considered so harsh that many people spoke out against West’s treatment of Ladd, including Miesha Tate.

Tate said that she was speaking from her own personal experience of what it can be like in a relationship with a coach/trainer and that she can recognize the signs of abuse. Ladd dismissed Tate’s comments as attention-seeking and later said that she’d be willing to fight Tate for free.

There have been no further stories regarding Ladd’s & West’s relationship since West apologized for his conduct in Ladd’s corner last October. Nevertheless, Strickland was inspired to send out the following tweet Thursday.

“Sooooooooooo I’m pretty sure @TheAspenLadd is suffering from Stockholm syndrome…….. lmao!!!!!!!!I didn’t really care about the corner
video but when you add some other facts to the situation it’s a little fucking creepy lmao!!!”

Strickland would then post a follow-up tweet to lend more insight into the information that prompted his initial tweet.

“Women are very easy targets for male coaches, automatically assume weird father role which turns into a hero worship complex. The fact you started to train with him at what 12? 100 percent grooming sexual predator. Tell me my facts are wrong and I’ll apologize now. @TheAspenLadd

Strickland would close by also referencing Rose Namajunas’ relationship with Barry. The couple has a 13-year age gap between them and reportedly met when Namajunas was 14 years old and Barry was 27.

“Is Jim West and Pat Berry (sic) the Weinstine of MMA? Or is Michael Jackson a better comparison…@netflix is currently contacting @TheAspenLadd and @rosenamajunas for a TV series lol!!!!! OK, I’m done gotta spar..” Strickland concluded.

Update: Sean Strickland Doubles Down On “Predator” Criticisms

Strickland has not let up on his criticisms of Barry and West. This week, he made Barry the primary focus of his vitriol.

“This showed up on my Twitter feed… Looks like they met on Jeffery Epsteins island…. Bro you been on the Lolita express?!? @HypeOrDie

“OK I’m done making fun of Pat the PREDATOR Barry. Rose followed me on IG once so naturally I slid in her DM’s. I didn’t know she had a umm what would you call him?? A groomer? Idk either way I won’t touch this again, hopefully Pat will do the same when he’s around children..”

Strickland would then make it clear that he has not forgotten about Jim West.

“Age really is just a number. @gloverteixeira didn’t let the doubters put him down when he won the belt at 42. “Too old” “washed up” And don’t forget JIM WEST and Aspan “Jim she’s 14” “Jim you’re going to go to prison” “Jim you can’t groom a child” Way to beat the odds Jim.”

Ladd is coming off a second consecutive loss, this time to Raquel Pennington who defeated Ladd at UFC 273 via unanimous decision. This made for the third defeat in four fights for the 27-year-old.

Rose Namajunas will be competing at this weekend’s UFC 274 when she puts her strawweight title on the line against Carla Esparza. Neither Namajunas, Ladd, nor their coaches/partners have directly addressed Strickland’s remarks.

In Namajunas’ case, she may very well be unaware of Strickland’s comments seeing as how she goes out of her way to stay off of social media whenever possible. This week, in particular, it could serve as an unneeded distraction for her.

As for Strickland, he has enough to worry about with his professional life, as he will be taking on rising hype train Alex Pereira this July at UFC 277 in a bout that many believe could serve as a middleweight title eliminator.

What do you make of Sean Strickland’s remarks about the relationships of Aspen Ladd and Rose Namajunas?

Jorge Masvidal has had his arraignment date pushed back.

The UFC welterweight and ‘BMF’ title holder was originally scheduled to appear in court on April 23rd. However, he no-showed his scheduled court appearance on Thursday morning at the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court in Miami, Florida. His attorneys, Brad Cohen and Mauricio Padilla were present, however. The arraignment hearing has been pushed back to next week (April 28th), per the Circuit Court Judge, Zachary L. James.

How Jorge Masvidal Found Himself In This Situation

On March 21st, Miami Police were called to a steakhouse following reports of an assault being committed on Colby “Chaos” Covington. Two days later, Jorge Masvidal was arrested and subsequently released on a $15,000 bond. There are several potentially serious criminal punishments that Masvidal could face, especially with Covington proceeding with pressing charges. These include the possibility of being convicted on aggravated battery (15 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine for second-degree felony aggravated battery). ‘Gamebred’ could potentially face more punitive punishment in addition to this, with a criminal mischief charge still a possibility as well. Furthermore, Masvidal could also face a first-degree felony aggravated battery charge for concealment of his identity (potential prison sentence of up to 30 years).

Shockingly, and very interestingly, Masvidal chose to enter a plea of “not guilty” when he was first brought before Judge James. We will see the next chapter of this potentially damaging legal saga play out on April 28th.

What are your thoughts on Jorge Masvidal’s situation?
