Oblique Kick

Khalil Rountree Jr. seems to have saved his UFC career with an impressive win last night.

The light-heavyweight fighter was riding two losses into his bout with Modestas Bukauskas at UFC Vegas 36.

Rountree dominated the fight from the first bell. The 31-year-old put the pressure on his opponent and landed often in the first round. Bukauskas seemed to have weathered the early storm and was working his way back into the fight in round two before he suffered a gruesome TKO loss.

The Lithuanian-born Londoner ate a nasty oblique kick that twisted his knee in the wrong direction. Bukauskas fell to the mat with an audible scream of pain. Rountree walked away with his first UFC win since 2019.

Post-fight he took to social media to wish his opponent a speedy recovery. Meanwhile, other fighters reacted to the kick and some even called for it to be banned.

Darren Till

Darren Till is drawing inspiration from Charles Oliveria and Michael Bisping following his third-round submission defeat to Derek Brunson at UFC Vegas 36.

‘The Gorilla’ was somewhat fancied to establish himself as a true middleweight title contender in the UFC Vegas 36 main event but things really didn’t go his way.

Brunson was able to dominant the vast majority of the match-up with his superior wrestling skills. Till hit the mat in each round and always struggled to get back to his feet. In round three, Brunson landed in the mount position, forcing Till to surrender his back and ultimately fall to a rear-naked choke submission defeat.

The scouser has now lost four of his last five fights. Till exited the Octagon very quickly after his latest loss. The 28-year-old hasn’t spoken to the press and has only broken his silence to post images of Oliveira and Bisping holding UFC gold on social media.

‘Do Bronx’ seen Till’s post and told the Liverpudlian to “never give up”. The current lightweight king even extended Till an invitation to come train with him.

“Keep you head up, never give up! God knows everything,” Oliveira wrote on Twitter. “Return home, get back to the gym – train and dedicated yourself. Hey @darrentill2 we’re here my ma’, if you need our support, lets train together. #UFCVegas36

Bisping was on commentary duty for the fight. ‘The Count’ offered Till some constructive criticism when he spoke post-fight with BT Sport. However, he was keen to ensure his pal didn’t get too down on himself after the loss.

“It’s another loss on his record and it’s further halting his progression to becoming champion of the world,” Bisping said. “But what I will say this, in terms of encouragement, he’s only 28-years-old. You know, I had many, many ups and downs throughout my career.

“Maybe some tweaks,” Bisping suggested. “I’m not saying he should leave Team Kaobon but maybe go somewhere where they have a heavier influence on wrestling, certainly on jujitsu as well. With absolute respect, the ground game could’ve been a little better there tonight. No shame in the takedowns, Derek Brunson is a strong wrestler and he’s built his entire career on that but I thought when he hit the ground I thought he could’ve done some things a little better.

“Keep your chin up, mate,” Bisping concluded. “You’ve got it. You’ve got all the skills, you really do. You have all the potential to become a champion one day. Youth is on your side, but you’ve got to stay the course, you’ve got to stay focused. Do not give up on yourself.”

Derek Brunson can consider himself unlucky to be walking away from the UFC Vegas 36 main event without some extra money in his pocket. The 36-year-old put on a dominant display and ultimately stopped Darren ‘The Gorilla’ Till inside three rounds to establish himself as a true contender at middleweight. Away from the main attraction UFC Vegas 36 delivered plenty of standout moments and performances worthy of bonuses.

Tom Aspinall

The 28-year-old had a much better night at the office than his Kaobon teammate, Till. Aspinall put on a dominant performance and was able to get a surprise first-round finish over the usually tough Sergey Spivak. An elbow sent Spivac tumbling to the mat and Aspinall expertly followed up to make it four wins in a row since joining the UFC roster.

Paddy Pimblett

The former Cage Warriors featherweight champion delivered big time in his UFC debut. Pimblett got caught flush early by Luigi Verandermini but showed heart to work his way back into the fight very quickly. ‘The Baddy’ ultimately caught his opponent with a right hand before pursuing the finish with a barrage of punches. Pimblett landed several flush before the Brazilian fell unconscious to the canvas.

Molly McCann and Ji Yeon Kim

In the featured prelim Pimblett’s teammate, Molly McCann appeared to be fighting for her UFC future. The Scouse flyweight was making the final walk of her current UFC contract and was riding a two-fight losing streak into the bout. McCann fought like everything was on the line and ultimately walked away with a unanimous decision win after three rounds of hunting down her opponent. Kim played her part in what turned out to be a great fight. Both women walk away $50,000 richer.

Israel Adesanya

Israel Adesanya has offered his response to Derek Brunson following UFC Vegas 36.

Brunson went one-on-one with Darren Till inside the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Vegas. Brunson ended up scoring the third-round submission finish over Till. After the fight, Brunson said he’s gunning for a title shot.

“I’m tired of these guys not mentioning my name. You know [Israel Adesanya], look at the camera, mention my name. I heard you mentioning Till and [Jared] Cannonier. Cause I’ve been busting my butt, four years after my loss to get back to this point. I’m ready to contend.”

Adesanya was quick to respond to Brunson.

“Calm down…boy. You still a bum…son.”

Back in 2018, Adesanya stopped Brunson via second-round TKO. Since the defeat to Adesanya, Brunson has amassed a five-fight winning streak. Along the way, Brunson has beaten Till, Kevin Holland, Edmen Shahbazyan, Ian Heinisch, and Elias Theodorou.

Brunson has said he believes he’s due for a shot at the UFC Middleweight Title. He even said he’s willing to wait for the winner of Israel Adesanya vs. Robert Whittaker 2.

“I’m not broke. I’ll sit and wait [for the title shot]. I know Izzy and [Robert] Whittaker got a fight coming up. I’ll sit and wait. That gives me five, six months to go ahead and get my body right and prepare for this really last, long title push that I’m trying to make.”

The UFC initially wanted to book Adesanya vs. Whittaker 2 at the end of 2021. Travel issues have reportedly forced the promotion to push the bout into 2022.

Derek Brunson

Derek Brunson has spoken out on his huge submission victory over Darren Till.

Brunson and Till shared the Octagon in the main event of UFC Vegas 36. The middleweight clash took place on Sept. 4. It was clear that Till struggled with the wrestling of Brunson and it ended up being his demise. Brunson locked up a rear-naked choke in the third round and that was all she wrote.

After the fight, Brunson expressed his belief that many top names at 185 pounds haven’t been clamoring to name drop him (h/t MMAFighting.com).

Brunson also said he felt snagging a submission victory over Till was never in doubt. In fact, he wanted to showcase his jiu-jitsu skills more.

“I saw a submission the whole time. I’m a Renzo Gracie black belt so I wanted to put it to use. I’m really good on the ground and I want to showcase it.”

Brunson is the number five-ranked UFC middleweight. He believes he’s due for a title shot and says he’ll wait for that opportunity.

Brunson has a TKO loss to Israel Adesanya, who is the current UFC Middleweight Champion. Since that loss, he has gone on a five-fight winning streak. Time will tell if the winning streak is enough for Derek Brunson to fight the winner of Adesanya vs. Robert Whittaker 2.

Count it five consecutive victories for middleweight mainstay, Derek Brunson who turns in a dominant UFC Vegas 36 headliner to submit Darren Till with a third round rear-naked choke — rounding out tonight’s nine-fight card.

Headlining in his third consecutive event, Brunson managed to utilise his wrestling to his advantage in each of the three rounds — scoring three successful shots over the course of the main event clash.

Attempting to mitigate the lethal boxing of Till early, the Sanford MMA staple managed to take Till down in the first, landing a series of bruising elbows and ground strikes whilst postured from half guard.

With more of the same in the second frame for the veteran contender, Brunson pressured a maybe over enthusiastic Till in the third to eventually take his back past the second minute mark.

Locking his hands under the Team Kaobon mainstay’s neck at the Octagon fence, the #5 ranked, Till managed to force an eventual tap — before calling for a championship rematch against either reigning champion, Israel Adesanya or former champion and incoming challenger, Robert Whittaker.

Below, catch the highlights from Brunson’s impressive submission success against Till.
