GSP Says He Thinks He Can Finish Condit But Maybe…He’s Jinxing Himself?

Georges St. Pierre is a couple weeks away from his UFC 137 Welterweight title defense against Carlos Condit and he believes that he can finish him.

GSP said of his upcoming fight with Condit:

“I do believe I will be able to knock him out or submit him. I will remain the welterweight champion.”

Now, that’s cool to be confident, but maybe not so good to be specific on your hopes for a finish, especially when you keep mentioning it before every fight and it never comes to fruition.

GSP said before his fight with Jake Shields:

“It’s hard to finish a guy that doesn’t completely come forward to attack me, you know… but I know one thing is Jake Shields is gonna bring the best of Georges St. Pierre.”

and he said before his fight with Josh Koscheck:

“”I was not happy with my last fight. I want to take the guy out. I want to finish Koscheck.”

and he said before his fight with Dan Hardy:

“I want to take him out as fast as I can and go home.”

The list goes on and on. But no doubt,  GSP is a tremendous fighter who earns his victories, it’s just…maybe he should stick to simply saying, “I believe I’m going to win” and then if he actually finishes the guy, it’s a nice surprise!

Rashad Evans Actually Says Something Nice About Jon Jones!

Rashad Evans gave an interview to Fight Hype where he actually spoke of his respect for Jones as a fighter: “I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jon [Jones] as a fighter and I.

Rashad Evans gave an interview to Fight Hype where he actually spoke of his respect for Jones as a fighter:

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jon [Jones] as a fighter and I really like to watch him fight. I enjoy the growth that I have seen him have as a fighter just from the short time I have seen him come in the gym until now.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be Rashad not to get under Jone’s skin. This time, he offers some detail how Lyoto Machida can beat Jones at UFC 140 and warns him what to look out for:

“If anybody can give him trouble, I would think it would be Machida, and for a couple of reasons. One reason is Machida’s used to that kind of craftiness and movement because he trains with Anderson Silva, so he’s used to seeing that. That’s where Jon Jones got a lot of his style from is Anderson Silva. So Lyoto is used to training with the originator. One thing Jones brings to the table that Anderson doesn’t is the ability to take the fight to the ground. He brings that ground and pound and Jon is very good at that, so there are a couple of areas where Lyoto will have to watch out for Jon. But for the most part, if he can use his footwork and watch out for some of the tricks and not stay on the outside and watch like everyone else does… I think he could do pretty good in this fight.”

UFC 140 tickets are on sale to the public this Saturday, October 15th.

Tips for Brian Stann to Beat Chael Sonnen

Brian Stann is coming off two victories via his excellent punching power, having TKO’d Chris Leben in the first round of his UFC 125 bout and KO’d Jorge Santiago at UFC 130. Yet, Stann is a prominent (+225) underdog to Chael Sonnen for this weekend’s UFC 136. Sonnen is best known for his wrestling prowess, specifically as a Greco-Roman wrestling champion while Stann’s pointed MMA flaw is decisively his wrestling, which he professes to have targeted in his training regime over the past two years. But Stann doesn’t seem to think his two years of wrestling will be his key to victory this Saturday night and instead reminded us that he can punch. Stann said:

“I think sometimes when oddsmakers and people keep telling me about this fight and how big a longshot I am, I think people forget – I even went back to my bout agreement and checked – but I can punch in this fight. So, I feel good.”

It’s good for Stann to have that kind of confidence…and humor; however, getting knocked out isn’t exactly one of Sonnen’s weaknesses. In fact in his entire pro-career, Sonnen has only lost a fight via TKO twice and the last time that happened was in 2004 (to Terry Martin at XFO 4). So, yeah, keep your hands ready to fire Stann, but maybe look to armbar Sonnen, as well. In Chael Sonnen’s (25-11-1) career he has lost via armbar 4 times (the most recent being his Triangle Armbar loss to Anderson Silva in the 5th round of that spectacular (though possibly steroid induced UFC 117) Middleweight title-fight. He’s also been choked out 3 times… This goes to show you that although Sonnen is a member of a top known grappling team like Team Quest, you can still use his very strengths to overpower him, which is actually a great essence to Martial Arts… the ability to use an opponent’s energy to leverage against him.

So keep that in mind Brian Stann and if anything, both you guys, please just give us one hell of a clean [meaning steroid free ;) ] fight. I cannot wait for this one.

UFC 136 Will Answer “The Great Debate” (VIDEO)

UFC released this promo video for UFC 136: Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III and called it “The Great Debate” as the world and the judges were clearly divided on who actually won their headlining title bout at UFC 125. It’s a fun video featuring UFC fighter cameos from Maynard himself and Forrest Griffin and definitely makes a better debate than anyone in the GOP Presidential Candidate debates… I think. I didn’t really watch it, but I watched the video below and it really helped me decide who I’ll vote for in the election next year.

Gray Maynard showed off his super strength by climbing a rope at a speed of 3 ft per second for ESPN Sport Science. Gray holds one of the fastest knockouts in history at 9 seconds in the first round against Joe Veres. Makes you wonder what kind of abuse Frankie Edgar‘s head can take, that he didn’t get knocked out in the first round of UFC 125. Maybe Sport Science can do a feature on that next. Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III happens this Saturday live from Houston at UFC 136.

Um… Can a Contact High Get You a Positive Result on a Drug Test?

Dave Herman tested positive for marijuana in his system which led to his fight being yanked off the UFC 136 card, but Herman told MMAFighting‘s Ben Fowlkes that he doesn’t actually smoke weed. Herman said:

“I do not smoke marijuana. I can’t say I’m not around it. I live in California. Pretty much everyone out here smokes weed. Maybe I need to pick my friends a little better. I don’t know.”

This lead me to wonder if maybe Herman who has probably been cutting weight recently, may have gotten a late night sweet tooth which lead him into a buddy’s kitchen where a delicious plate of brownies on a counter got the better of him. Or maybe… he was in a car with a bunch of potheads. I did some intense research which consisted of me googling the question i actually titled this post with: “can a contact high get you a positive result on a drug test?” and I found this answer from what I will put my reputation on the line for and say is a reliable resource called Drugs.Blurtit.com and it says:

Generally, no you cannot test positive for marijuana if you didn’t smoke it. Second-hand smoke is not concentrated enough to show up in your system; however if you are in an air-tight environment such as a car or even a closet where companions are smoking and you inhaled deeply, then yes you can test positive.

So there you have it. Poor Dave Herman got smoked out in a car. Life is unfair.
