Calvin Kattar

The UFC has finally revealed the full event lineup for it’s July 15th card on “Fight Island”.

The card is to be headlined by ranked featherweights Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige. The two will face off with Ige looking to climb the rankings and make his way into the top 10 while Kattar is aiming to prove he deserves to be in title contention.

Coming off his recent knockout victory of Jeremy Stephens, Kattar took this fight after Stephens failed to make weight continuing to showcase a stellar performance finishing Stephens with elbows towards the end of the second round.

Ige’s most recent bout was against Edson Barboza. This would be Barboza’s first fight at Featherweight and it didn’t go as planned for the former lightweight with Ige winning a split decision. What was a very close fight went to the judges who ultimately thought Ige did enough to get the nod.

In the Co-Main event, we see a bantamweight matchup between Frankie Edgar and Pedro Munhoz. This is the first time Edgar has made the move down to bantamweight. The former Lightweight champion was set to make the move in 2019 until a short notice loss to The Korean Zombie left him unable to participate in his scheduled bantamweight debut.

Pedro Munhoz most recently faced Aljamain Sterling in June of 2019, losing a unanimous decision. Munhoz is going to look to get back into the win column when he welcomes the former champion to his new division.

Holly Holm: There’s A Reason I Get Regular Title Shots

Holly Holm still plans on becoming a UFC champion again.

Holm meets Irene Aldana in a pivotal bantamweight encounter that will headline the UFC’s upcoming August 1 show. The former champion is coming off a unanimous decision win over Raquel Pennington in January as she bounced back from her first-round TKO defeat to Amanda Nunes in their bantamweight title fight.

With many seeing Aldana as next in line for a 135-pound title shot, a potential win for Holm over the Mexican could see her enter title contention yet again, especially if Nunes were to retire. It that happened, it would be her fourth title shot across two divisions since losing her title to Miesha Tate in 2016.

And although she has received plenty of criticism for her previous title shots, Holm, 38, believes there’s a simple reason why she keeps getting them.

“I’ve fallen short of getting that title back more than once, and it’s frustrating, but I know I keep fighting the very top-ranked girls, so I’m constantly right there,” Holm told MMA Junkie. “I’m still aching for it. I still want it. That’s a lot to say. Some people say, ‘Oh, I want the belt’ then they don’t really think about it. I know exactly how much work that takes to get there, and I know it took a big commitment.

“You’ve got to win fights along the way and when it comes, I can’t let the opportunity slip through my fingers again. Obviously it’s right there. I know people say, ‘Oh, she’s had plenty of title fights.’ There’s a reason: Because I keep fighting the best, and I keep staying right there. A lot of times I’m just one fight away. No matter what, I have Irene Aldana in front of me.”

Holm Prepared For Aldana

Holm won’t face an easy task either.

Aldana is a highly-skilled striker who has won five of her last six and is coming off an impressive knockout victory over the previously undefeated Ketlen Vieira. While she acknowledges the threats of Aldana, Holm plans on getting the win simply by being superior in every department.

“My goal is just to be clearer, stronger, sharper, and more well rounded,” Holm added. “I want to do all of that. I know she’s coming. She’s got a lot of movement; she’s got long punches and long arms. She’s one of the taller bantamweights.

“Every fighter brings their own strengths, and my job is just to be better at any of those things, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Do you think Holm will end up getting another title shot?

Alexander Volkanovski: Khabib Nurmagomedov Fight ‘Definitely An Option’

Volkanovski NurmagomedovUFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is still gunning for a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov. Volkanovski Nurmagomedov

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is still gunning for a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Volkanovski is set to defend his featherweight title in a rematch with former champion Max Holloway in the co-main event of UFC 251 which takes place July 11 on Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island.

A second win over Holloway would mark his first title defense at 145 pounds. And while there is a growing list of contenders at featherweight, “The Great” would be lying if he wasn’t interested in moving up and potentially facing the lightweight champion in Nurmagomedov.

“I don’t like people chasing other divisions, but (fighting Nurmagomedov) is definitely an option,” Volkanovski told theScore. “Right now, got a belt to defend, and then there’s probably going be No. 1 contender (after that). But I mean early next year, if something comes to me, like that fight, I’ll have to take it.”

Volkanovski: I’m Hard To Hold Down

It’s a fight that Volkanovski has spoken of in the past.

And the reason he particularly likes it is not only the chance of becoming a two-weight champion, but also because he feels he matches up well with Nurmagomedov.

“Khabib is one of the GOATs as well. Nothing but respect for the dude,” Volkanovski said. “But I’m very, very hard to hold down. I’ve obviously got the brains. I’ve got the cardio. I’m a freak when it comes to holding on the ground; it’s just almost impossible holding me on the ground.

“Nothing but respect to all the fighters that are in the UFC, but every single one of us wants to prove something. And you know, eventually, I want to prove myself in that lightweight division too.”

Ostovich Suspended For Eight Months

Rachael Ostovich has been suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

The UFC women’s flyweight failed a drug test for ostarine and GW1516 following an out-of-competition drug test administered earlier this year on January 3.

Ostovich identified a supplement that contained the banned substances, even though they were not listed on the supplement label. However, she was still hit with a suspension.

She was initially issued a one-year suspension, but saw four months reduced due to a provisional suspension faced last year due to an atypical finding that was being investigated by USADA. That investigation didn’t lead to any further sanctions so Ostovich was offered a four-month reduction.

“Although ostarine and GW1516 were not listed on the supplement label, the analysis revealed that the product contained ostarine and GW1516, the substances for which Ostovich tested positive,” USADA wrote in a statement. “The product label listed another prohibited substance, but Ostovich did not realize at the time that it was prohibited. Consistent with other cases with similar circumstances, USADA determined that a small reduction from the default two-year period of ineligibility was justified.

“Ostovich received an additional reduction to the otherwise applicable period of ineligibility for her Full and Complete Cooperation. Under the revised UFC (Anti-Doping Program) announced on November 25, 2019, a Full and Complete Cooperation reduction may be granted in the event that an athlete demonstrates that they did not intend to enhance their performance and provided full, prompt, and truthful responses and information to all reasonable inquiries and requests for information.”

Ostovich’s suspension is retroactive to January 3 and she will be able to compete once the eight months are up. She hasn’t competed since January last year when she suffered a submission defeat to Paige VanZant.
