Robbie Lawler is the first three-fight losing streak of his career. The former UFC welterweight champion has now lost to Rafael dos Anjos, Ben Askren, and now Colby Covington.

“Chaos” dominated Lawler all fight long as the former champ couldn’t do anything significant. After the fight, “Ruthless” admitted Covington just did a good job and it was not anything on him as he felt good.

“Colby did a really good job,” Lawler said after the fight. “I just wasn’t able to do enough. I kept a good pace (and) mixed it up with takedowns. My body felt good. I just need to go back to the drawing board and get back to work because there’s a few things I can strengthen up and get better.

“It’s a learning experience. I actually felt pretty good going out in the cage. I felt pretty good in there. Just need to get back to work.”

Something that no doubt had to impact Robbie Lawler was how much Covington threw. He threw over 500 strikes, but for “Ruthless” he didn’t care as he was just focused on dodging them.

“I’m just trying to duck and dodge and weave,” Lawler said. “You don’t pay attention to those things. You’re not counting punches. His volume was high. He kept a good rate. But it’s just part of the game.”

Ultimately, after a fight where he didn’t even win a single round, he says it is back to the drawing board after this one.

“It’s been a while since I felt good moving around, bouncing around,” Lawler said. “My takedown defense was pretty good. Getting back up was pretty good. I just need to get back to work and build on those things.

“It’s all just a learning experience. I feel like somebody could take that and twist it and say, ‘Maybe he wasn’t right because of this.’ That was the best I’ve been for a while, and I’m going to grow from it.”

Colby Covington had a dominant performance against Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark. There, the former interim welterweight champion won every single round on each judge’s scorecards.

“Chaos” controlled the pace the entire fight and threw over 500 strikes, and attempted over 20 takedowns. It was a phenomenal performance and one that should get him a title shot. Yet, the fight almost didn’t happen according to Covington. He revealed this in an interview with TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter.

“Yeah, three weeks before the fight I took a headbutt in training and as you can see right here, I have a nasty cut. We had to, well, the doctor did a shitty job on the stitches. He didn’t stitch it right, he stitched them loose,” he explained. “So, I went to a plastic surgeon and he’s like ‘Hey don’t fight man, you could lose your eyelid if you get hit the right way’. I was like, you know what I have to fight. I have to show up for the UFC. I have to show my worth as a main event fighter.

“You know I didn’t even get to train. I had no training camp Aaron, and I promise you that on God,” Covington continued. “You can go ask any of these coaches, all we were doing was running and hitting pads, and of course my championship work in the bedroom. It was a challenging training camp. But wait until I get a full training camp and get ready for Marty Fakenewsman and unify this belt. He’s going to get finished.”

Although many do not like Covington and don’t believe him, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani tweeted proof of the cut.

As Helwani points out, it is the type of cut that a commission would say you can’t fight with. So, “Chaos” had to hide it, and did a good job in the fight with the cut.

Georges St-Pierre retired earlier this year, but talk of a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov kept coming up. Many wanted to see arguably the greatest fighter of all-time take on the undefeated Russian.

It would have been a massive fight and a huge draw. Yet, the UFC was not interested. They didn’t want ‘GSP’ to beat Nurmagomedov then retire, to then have the Las Vegas-based promotion without a lightweight champion.

Even St-Pierre admitted that was a fight he wanted but now is no longer thinking about it. And, he is no longer focusing on being the best fighter in the world.

“It was on my mind when I retired, I really wanted to do it,” St-Pierre said to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter. “But now, telling you the truth, UFC were clear, they had other plans for Khabib. So I turned a page. I cannot wait for the fight to happen and twiddle my thumb, I have other plans for my life. Being the best fighter in the world is not my number one priority anymore. It used to be, now it’s not. I have family, friends, I have a lot of more important things to do. I have other projects down the road.”

Although it was a fight he wanted, he said if the UFC called for the fight, it probably wouldn’t happen. He says competing is something that won’t happen in his life again.

“I’m always training, I’m always in good shape, I will always be. But competition, for me, it’s a chapter of my life that is over.”

Whether or not the Georges St-Pierre vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight will ever happen is to be seen.

It appears that retired former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar may have made a lot more money throughout his tenure with the promotion than initially revealed.

Lesnar had eight fights with the UFC during his mixed martial arts (MMA) career from 2008 to 2016. Thanks to his notoriety from his early days in the WWE, Lesnar was one of the biggest draws the promotion had ever seen, and in turn, received some massive paydays. He last competed at UFC 200 back in 2016 when he bested Mark Hunt via unanimous decision.

Of course, the win was later overturned due to Lesnar testing positive for a banned substance. However, he still earned a $2.5 million payday, a massive raise from the $400,000 purse he received from fighting Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 in his previous fight from 2011.

According to Jason Cruz of MMAPayout, who obtained unredacted passages from Hal J. Singer, an expert for the Plaintiffs in an ongoing lawsuit between the UFC and several former fighters, Lesnar received $750,000 per fight when fighting as a non-champion. According to the document, Lesnar received half of that payday through the corporation DEATHCLUTCH within 30 days after the fight. It was then revealed he received the other half within 60 days after.

It was not noted which fights or for how many fights the deal was in effect. (via Bloody Elbow)

“For each and every Bout, in which Fighter participates where he is not recognized as a UFC Champion, by Zuffa, within thirty (30) days following the completion of each Bout, as contemplated in Section 7.1 (c) of the Promotional Agreement, Zuffa shall pay to DEATHCLUTCH, via bank wire or check, the amount of Three Hundred Seventy Five Thousand Dollars (US $375,000.00), less all permissible or required deductions and withholdings.

“Within sixty (60) days following the completion of each Bout, as contemplated in Section 7.1 (c) of the Promotional Agreement, Zuffa shall pay to DEATHCLUTCH, via bank wire or check, the additional amount of Three Hundred Seventy Five Thousand Dollars (US $375,000), less all permissible or required deductions and withholdings for a total combined payment of Seven Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars (US $750,000.00).”

The following documentation then specified Lesnar’s championship pay.

” …an agreement with Brock Lesnar that specifies lump sums to be paid conditional on champion status (“For each and every Bout, in which Fighter participates where he is recognized as a UFC Champion by Zuffa, within thirty (30) days following the completion of each Bout, as contemplated in Section 7.1 (a) of the Promotional Agreement Zuffa shall pay to DEATHCLUCTH, via bank wire or check, the amount of Eight Hundred Twelve Thousand Five Hundred Dollars (US $812,500.00), less permissible or required deductions and withholdings.

“Within sixty (60) days following the completion of each Bout, as contemplated in Section 7.1 (a) of the Promotional Agreement, Zuffa shall pay to DEATHCLUTCH, via bank wire or check, the additional amount of Eight Hundred Twelve Thousand Five Hundred Dollars (US $812,500.00), less all permissible or required deductions and withholdings, for a total combined payment of One Million Six Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Dollars (US $1,625,000.000).”

If the above documentation is to be believed to have been in effect for all of “The Beast’s” UFC fights from 2008-2011, Lesnar would have banked an estimated $7,875,000; and that’s not including his fight purses, performance bonuses, and pay-per-view (PPV) bonuses.

What do you think about Lesnar’s earnings over his UFC career?

It looks like Ben Askren and Demian Maia might be next for each other after all.

It was reported late last month that the UFC was looking into booking Askren and Maia for September. However, Maia was recently answering questions on Twitter and was asked who the most challenging grappler he has ever faced in his career was. Maia responded by teasing that challenge may be next for him in Ben Askren.

“That’s tough, so many different and good challenges. Maybe the biggest challenge is yet to come in @Benaskren if we do compete?”

This caught the attention of Askren, who responded by saying he’s down to meet Maia inside the Octagon next at UFC Singapore on October 26.

“I’m in Oct 26 Demian. Are you in also?”

Maia responded to Askren by saying if that date works for everyone involved he’d be happy to fight “Funky” in Singapore.

“If that’s good for the @ufc , and for you as well, I would be happy to compete with you on that date. It is a intriguing challenge and I’m up for it! As a grappler it’s the kind of challenge that motivates me. It’s truly up to them.”

Earlier today (Sat. August 3, 2019) Colby Covington picked up a big win over Robbie Lawler in the UFC Newark main event.

Covington dominated “Ruthless” for 25 minutes inside of the Octagon. After his fight, however, Covington made some controversial comments about UFC Hall Of Famer Matt Hughes. He poked fun at Hughes’ 2017 train accident that left him hospitalized for some time.

Here’s what Covington had to say, per ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

“Let’s talk about a lesson, Robbie Lawler should have learned from Matt Hughes. Get off the tracks when the train is coming.”

Hughes, a noted supporter of Lawler in the past, took to Instagram to respond to Covington’s comments. Here’s what he had to say.

“Not sure if @colbycovmma should have use my accident as fuel for his post-fight trash talk, but that was one heck of a fight. Nice win for @americantopteam, and @ruthless_rl always puts on a good fight. Reminder though, this is the fighting world. People trash talk and you gotta have thick skin”

Aside from his controversial comments on Hughes, Covington is now expected to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title next. The pair actually had a heated exchange on the ESPN+ post-fight show.
