A potential barnburner has been added to UFC Copenhagen as lightweights Lando Vannata and Marc Diakiese are set to collide.

The news was first reported by MMA Newsome and later confirmed by MMA Junkie and other news outlets. An official fight announcement is expected soon.

Vannata came into the UFC with an 8-0 record. However, he has gone 2-3-2 with the promotion since. Despite an inconsistent record, one thing “Groovy” always brings to the table is excitement. And after getting back on the win column against Marcos Rosa Mariano earlier this year, he’ll look to make it two wins in a row for the first time under the promotion.

Diakiese also bounced back from a recent skid as he suffered three defeats in a row. “Bonecrusher” got back to winning ways, however, when he outpointed Joseph Duffy earlier this year.

UFC Copenhagen takes place September 28 and will be headlined by a middleweight bout between Jack Hermansson and Jared Cannonier. Fan favorite Gunnar Nelson takes on Thiago Alves in the co-main event in a welterweight matchup.

Here’s how the card is shaping up so far:

  • Jack Hermansson vs. Jared Cannonier
  • Gunnar Nelson vs. Thiago Alves
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Lina Lansberg
  • Ion Cu?elaba vs. Khalil Rountree Jr.
  • Lando Vannata vs. Marc Diakiese
  • Micha? Oleksiejczuk vs. Ovince Saint Preux
  • Alessio Di Chirico vs. Peter Sobotta
  • Alen Amedovski vs. John Phillips
  • Nicolas Dalby vs. Alex Oliveira

What do you make of the card?

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s stock continues to rise as he was recently ranked as the third most influential Muslim in Russia.

That’s according to Business Online (H/T Bloody Elbow) which has Nurmagomedov ranked below the likes of head of the Council of Muftis, Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin and the first president of Tatarstan, Mintimer Shaimiev.

“The Eagle” was also notably ahead of Head of Tatarstan Rustam Minninhanov and Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov, both of whom were ranked fourth and fifth respectively. It only goes to show how influential Nurmagomedov has become in the region, particularly in the last year or so.

While he’ll have to make do with third on this particular list, the lightweight king is without a doubt at the top of the list for most successful Russian athletes. Last month, Forbes gave that honor to Nurmagomedov while also ranking him No. 1 in their top 40 under 40 list for show business and sports in Russia.

Nurmagomedov last competed at UFC 229 in October when he defeated Conor McGregor to retain his title. He is set to face Dustin Poirier in a lightweight title unification clash that will headline UFC 242, which takes place September 7 in Abu Dhabi.

What do you make of Nurmagomedov’s recent success and rise in popularity and influence?

UFC heavyweight Stefan Struve’s retirement didn’t last long as he is set to return to the Octagon at the promotion’s return to Washington D.C.

Struve ended a three-fight losing skid with a submission victory over Marcos Rogerio de Lima at UFC Prague earlier this year. “Skyscraper” would announce his retirement following the fight as he felt it was time to put his gloves aside.

“I wanted to end on a good note,” the 31-year-old said at the time. “A whole life with lots of opportunity outside of fighting, which I can fully focus on right now. I’m just going to be successful with something else.”

However, as is the case for some, it’s hard to leave the fight game. And Struve seems to be one of them as he is now set to collide with Ben Rothwell. The promotion announced the fight on Tuesday:

UFC D.C. takes place December 7 and will be the promotion’s first event there since Dominick Cruz headlined against Demetrious Johnson back in October 2011.

There is no main event set for now, but other bouts announced include a strawweight contest between Claudia Gadelha and Cynthia Calvillo and a bantamweight clash between Aspen Ladd and Yana Kunitskaya.

It’s early days, but what do you think of the card so far? Is Struve making the right decision by unretiring?

Valentina Shevchenko has responded to Henry Cejudo calling her out for a crack at her 125-pound title.

Cejudo currently rules the men’s 125 and 135-pound divisions. He threw out the challenge to “The Bullet” online after hearing about her victory at UFC Uruguay over the weekend. Speaking on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” yesterday (Mon. August 12, 2019), Shevchenko got the opportunity to respond to Cejudo’s callout.

Shevchenko warned the Olympic gold medalist to be careful what he wishes for, because she’ll make it happen to where he loses all of his gold forever. (via MMA Mania)

“Be careful what you wish because he is the all gold hunter, but I can make it happen that he will lose all of his gold forever,” said Valentina.

In regards to whether or not she thinks Cejudo was actually serious with the callout, Shevchenko remains unsure. However, she’s not afraid of anything and didn’t rule the idea out.

“I don’t know because he is very insistent in this. But I say, be careful what you wish. Never, I am not afraid of anything.”

What do you think about Shevchenko’s response to Cejudo’s callout? Who would you pick in a potential clash between the pair?
