Tony Ferguson has no preference for who he should be facing next. However, he feels he should be calling the shots anyway.

Ferguson extended his impressive winning streak to 12 after the doctors called an end to his fight with Donald Cerrone after the second round at UFC 238 on Saturday night. Despite yet another win, it is not clear whether “El Cucuy” will get the winner of UFC 242’s main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier. However, his shortlist seems to include the current lightweight champion in Nurmagomedov or a money fight with Conor McGregor.

“I’ve got 12 (wins) in a row, I should be calling the shots,” Ferguson said in the post-fight press conference. “I’ve had the title already; everyone else needs an eval [evaluation].

“I don’t know what else I have to do in this division to keep after it. Like I said, it’s a round robin tournament, but I’m tired of it. I’m here to stay. I am the f*cking champ. …If Dustin Poirier don’t do it, I’m going to do it man. Tiramisu needs an a** whooping, he needs two to the stomach from me.”

“If it’s McNuggets for a money fight, he’s an athlete too. I know the division misses him. I’m pretty sure he misses the fight game too. We need to see these fighters keep coming out and represent the sport because that’s why you got into it.”

Tony Ferguson’s Predictions

Ferguson is ready to step in for either Nurmagomedov or Poirier should they get injured leading up to UFC 242. However, should the fight go through, he sees Nurmagomedov emerging victorious.

“I see Dustin, he plays a lot against the ropes, he does a lot of boxing, he’s good good boxing,” Ferguson added. “But the kid needs to get his back off the ropes. At my academy, I have a full 20 by 20 canvas, but I don’t have any ropes around it. And I do that for a reason so I don’t get my back against the ropes. Once you get your back against the cage and you start doing that, Khabib’s going to put that pressure, take you down, double-leg you, he’s going to mount you like that dummy, he’s going to play smash and grab. That’s how I see that playing out.

“If I were to fight Khabib, I guaran-damn-tee you I would throw him from his feet to his back and beat him like in Sambo like a five-point move in wrestling. That’s my background. As far as even McNuggets goes, I would love to stand toe to toe and go with that dude. I respect him as an athlete. As a person, he’s kind of a douche. … I have a different agency now, there’s no conflict of interest. I’m here to kick some a**. I ran out of bubble gum but we’re here to do business.

A press conference featuring lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champion Dustin Poirier has been announced by the UFC.

It was recently confirmed that the pair would collide in a lightweight title unification fight which will headline the promotion’s return to Abu Dhabi at UFC 242. The event takes place at The Arena, Yas Island, on September 7.

The two fighters will now meet for the first time on June 12 in London. Like Nurmagomedov’s first press conference for his Conor McGregor fight, this one will also be a media-only event.

Unlike the first press conference with McGregor, though, there is not expected to be much trash talk. However, it will be interesting to see how the two interact with each other.

Nurmagomedov will be returning to action for the first time in 11 months following his fourth-round submission win over McGregor at UFC 229 last October. As for Poirier, he defeated featherweight champion Max Holloway for the interim lightweight title at UFC 236 in April to earn his shot at Nurmagomedov.

The winner of the bout should ideally face Tony Ferguson next following his win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 238. However, nothing seems to be assured when it comes to the lightweight division.

Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida’s back-and-forth war from 2009 will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame this summer.

The news was announced during the broadcast of UFC 238 in Chicago, Illinois, on Saturday night. Sanchez and Guida took center stage during the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale which took place at the Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas in June 2009. The three-round contest included a brawl to start things off, Guida getting dropped, ground exchanges and much more, as Sanchez eventually earned the split decision win.

In what was later named 2009 Fight of the Year, the contest will now be enshrined in UFC history.

“There are certain guys that, when you match them up, there’s no doubt in your mind that it’s going to be a good fight, and this was one of those fights,” UFC president Dana White said in a statement. “This fight represents everything that fans around the world love about UFC and the sport of mixed martial arts. Diego and Clay are two maniacs, and as soon as the fight began, they both came out blasting each other. It was crazy!

“This was an absolute war, and both guys gave everything they had for all three rounds. This fight was so good it was named the 2009 Fight of the Year. It is one of the best displays of heart, endurance and will to win that you will ever see. Congratulations to Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida on a fight that will always be remembered as one of the best ever.”

Sanchez and Guida Reflect

The win gave Sanchez his fourth consecutive victory at the time to earn him a lightweight title shot at BJ Penn.

“The fight with Guida was really fun,” Sanchez reflected. “My mentality was that it was time to get street on this wrestler and that’s exactly what I did!”

As for Guida, it ended a three-fight winning streak.

“When you take a rampaging beast like Diego Sanchez, and a wild Tasmanian devil like me, you get a recipe for Fight of the Year, and that’s what we gave UFC fans that night,” Guida said. “The fans were the true winners, and they deserved it more than anyone. Thank you for inducting this prolific battle into the UFC Hall of Fame.”

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place July 5 in Las Vegas at The Pearl at Palms Casino Resort. Sanchez will notably face Michael Chiesa in a welterweight contest the next night at UFC 239.
