Jose Aldo Says If McGregor Fight Doesn’t Materialize, Anthony Pettis Could Be Next

Jose Aldo and Anthony Pettis was once one of those MMA “dream matches” that fans thought could never happen, but according to recent reports, it might soon be a reality.

According to Brazilian TV talk show Revista Combate, a fight between UFC contenders and former champions Jose Aldo and Anthony “Showtime” Pettis could be an option if Conor McGregor doesn’t move back down to defend his UFC Featherweight Title in his next fight.

“I’m already frustrated that it might happen, but we’ll see,” Aldo recently told Brazilian TV show Revista Combate. “Every night I ask ‘give me one more chance to get in there again with him and I know it won’t happen again.’ but if it’s not him, I think I’d prefer to fight Pettis. I with them learned that I don’t have to look at the promotion’s side, the title run. A fight with Pettis would sell a lot more than Holloway.”

As noted, UFC President Dana White stated after the second Nate Diaz vs. McGregor fight at UFC 202 that if “The Notorious” one chose not to defend his title against interim champion Aldo in his next fight, he would have to give up the championship.

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Ryan Hall will compete for the first time since winning the reality series, taking on Gray Maynard this December at The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale.

Injuries have kept Hall (5-1) on the sidelines since defeating Artem Lobov in the finals of TUF 22. He was moved into the finale due to an injury to Saul Rogers after losing in the quarterfinals.

Maynard (12-5-1) owns a 10-5-1 mark with the UFC, including a pair of bouts with Frankie Edgar for the lightweight title. Since those series of bouts, though, “The Bully” is just 2-5 overall.

The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale takes place December 3 and features UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defending his title. “Mighty Mouse” is set to face the winner of TUF 24.

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum will get the chance to make a name for himself this November, as he has agreed to step in and replace Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone.

The welterweight contest is expected to be part of UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lawler bowed out of the bout, citing the need for more time to recover from his knockout loss to Tyron Woodley for the UFC title earlier this year.

Gastelum (12-2) picked up a win over former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in July, improving to 7-2 with the promotion. Cerrone, meanwhile, is now 31-7 overall and 18-4 with the UFC, including three-straight wins since moving up to 170 pounds.

According to MMAjunkie, verbal agreements for the bout are in place, but it has yet to be signed.
