Remaining promotional-perfect in tonight’s UFC Charlotte headliner, streaking Brazilian contender, Jailton Almeida manages to dispatch heavy-hitting Suriname native, Jairzinho Rozenstruik with a first round rear-naked choke — in patented dominant fashion.
Almeida, who entered his first organizational main event tonight as the #12 ranked heavyweight contender, scores his second finish of the year, having taken home a one-sided ground strikes TKO win over Shamil Abdurakhimov at UFC 283 back in January in his native Brazil.
Traversing kickboxing talent, Rozenstruik tonight in dominant fashion, Almeida, a product of Dana White’s Contender Series, the Brazilian managed to take down the former on his first attempt, landing a bull-rushing double-leg takedown.
Patiently waiting for an opening, Almeida was rewarded for his composure, as Rozenstruik moved to his back during a sweep attempt, allowing the Brazilian to take his back, sink in both hooks and latch onto a rear-naked choke submission success.
Below, catch the highlights from Jailton Almeida’s submission win over Jairzinho Rozenstruik
Undefeated Irish prospect Ian Garry may be partially responsible for Daniel Rodriguez’s struggle to make weight for their scheduled scrap on Saturday. Undefeated Irish prospect Ian Garry may be partially responsible for Daniel Rodriguez’s struggle to make weight for their scheduled scrap on Saturday.
The UFC will head to Charlotte, NC for a Fight Night event headlined by a heavyweight clash between top-ten-ranked contender Jairzinho Rozenstruik and streaking Brazilian standout Jailton Almeida. Before stepping inside the Octagon, all 22 fighters stepped on the scale for their respective bouts. When it came time for ‘D-Rod’ to weigh in, the California native came in a half-pound overweight, putting their main card matchup in jeopardy and Ian Garry may have been partially to blame.
In a video shared on social media, ‘The Future’ decided to deliver temptation right to Rodriguez’s door the night before weigh-ins. In the clip, which you can see below, Garry is observed leaving a pizza and some weed for his UFC on ABC 4 opponent.
Daniel Rodriguez Made Weight on His Second Attempt Despite Ian Garry’s Prank Pizza
Ian Garry’s prank may have been a little too effective. Fortunately, Rodriguez was able to make weight on his second attempt, keeping their fight from cancelation. Upon hearing Rodriguez’s initial weight, fans immediately began speculating if Garry’s harmless caper actually sabotaged his own fight.
With ‘D-Rod’ now on weight, he will now look to get back into the win column after seeing his four-fight win streak snapped at the hands of Neil Magny in November. That will be no easy task as he’s matched up with Ian Garry. ‘The Future’ has lived up to his moniker thus far, earning 11 straight wins, four under the UFC banner. Garry has scored decision victories over Darian Weeks and Gabe Green inside the Octagon while adding two highlight-reel-worthy knockouts against Jordan Williams and Gabe Green.
If Ian Garry can make it 12-0 on Saturday night, he will likely take Daniel Rodriguez’s No. 15 spot in the welterweight rankings.

Ahead of his Octagon return this weekend on the main card of UFC Fight Night Charlotte, Brazilian light heavyweight contender, Johnny Walker claims he’s “100 percent” ready for his first shot at divisional gold during his tenure with the UFC.
Walker, a product of Dana White’s Contender Series, is slated to return to the Octagon for the second time this year, co-headlining UFC on ABC 4 in a matchup against one-time title challenger and perennial contender, Anthony Smith.
Johnny Walker rides a two-fight winning run into his UFC return this weekend
Last time out on home soil in Rio de Janiero at UFC 283 in Brazil at the beginning of this year, Johnny Walker, the current #7 ranked division contender turned in his second consecutive victory with a first round elbow strikes stoppage of Paul Craig.
Back in September of last year at UFC 279, Walker turned in the first submission triumph of his Octagon run, stopping Ion Cutelaba with an opening round rear-naked choke.
And ahead of his high-profile co-headliner with Smith this weekend in North Carolina, Straight Blast Gym Ireland staple, Walker claimed he was “ready” to challenge for light heavyweight gold off the back of a sought-after win against Smith.
“One hundred percent, I’m ready, but I’m going to keep training every day, and I’m going to develop my skills,” Johnny Walker told assembled media at UFC Charlotte media day on Wednesday. “You can get better every time you train, every camp you train, but depending on the performance that I’m going to put on, it’s going to tell me and everybody else if I’m ready or not.”
Currently, the light heavyweight pack is led by fellow Dana White’s Contender Series product, Jamahal Hill, with the Illinois native capturing gold on the same card as Walker’s stoppage of Craig – landing the vacant light heavyweight crown with a unanimous decision win over the former’s compatriot, former champion, Glover Teixeira.
One-time light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith may be preoccupied by a fight with another Brazilian this weekend at UFC on ABC 4 in the form of Johnny Walker, however, stressed his interest in welcoming former middleweight champion, Sao Paulo striker, Alex Pereira to the weight class in the future. Smith, the current #5 ranked light heavyweight contender, is slated to co-headline the promotion’s return to Charlotte, North Carolina this weekend – taking on Rio de Janiero native, Walker over the course of three rounds.
Sidelined since a July main card clash with recent vacant title challenger, Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 277, Smith has since recovered from an ankle injury suffered in the clash, resulting in a ground strikes TKO blemish.
Prior to that defeat, the Nebraska veteran had embarked on a stunning three fight winning spree, laying waste to emerging talents, Devin Clark, Jimmy Crute, and Ryan Spann.
Anthony Smith notes his admiration for Alex Pereira
However, ahead of his UFC Charlotte return this weekend against Walker, Smith noted his interest in fighting the former’s compatriot, Pereira in the future – noting his admiration for the former two-weight GLORY Kickboxing kingpin.
“Yeah, I would love that fight [with Alex Pereira],” Anthony Smith told assembled media during his availability ahead of UFC Charlotte. “I’m a big fan of Alex, I’m a big kickboxing fan. So I knew who Alex Pereira was before he even came to the MMA side. So I was excited when I seen him get booked at LFA, I believe. I didn’t suspect he would be on the regional scene very long, just because the type of athlete that he is.”
“I think the same problems he would have – outside of Israel Adesanya he would have at 185 [pounds], he would have at 205 [pounds],” Anthony Smith explained. “You know, I’m a huge Israel Adesanya fan, I don’t ever wanna take away anything from that guy, but if Izzy is blast doubling you, and controlling you on the ground. You know, a guy like (Aleksandar) Rakic, (Magomed) Ankalaev, (Jan) Blachowicz, or myself, are gonna give you the same problems.”

Taking main event honors for the first time during his naive Octagon tenure, emerging Brazilian heavyweight contender, Jailton Almeida is fastly closing as a massive betting favorite to continue his promotional perfect ascension in Charlotte, North Carolina when pitted against Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
Almeida, the current #12 ranked heavyweight contender, has enjoyed a roughshod run through heavyweight contenders since his promotion from Dana White’s Contender Series back in February of last year.
Debuting in the Octagon with a knockout win over compatriot, Danilo Marques, the Bahia native has since lodged consecutive triumphs over Parker Porter, Anton Turkalj, and in his native Brazil at UFC 283 back in January, Shamil Abdurakhimov, to land within the promotion’s top-15 rankings at heavyweight.
As for Suriname kickboxing talent, Rozenstruik, the #9 rated challenger managed to snap his two fight losing skid to division elite Curtis Blaydes, and Alexander Volkov back in December with a knockout win over Chris Daukaus – earning a Performance of the Night bonus.
A four-year veteran under the banner of the UFC, Rozenstruik had embarked on a stunning four-fight winning streak before suffering a spectacular 20-second one-punch KO loss to former undisputed heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou in 2020 during the height of an uncertain period for the promotion.
13-4 and holding some remarkable knockout wins over competition including the likes of former champions, Andrei Arlovski, and Junior dos Santos as well as perennial contender, Alistair Overeem – Rozenstruik is still placed as a massive +400 betting underdog to hand Almeida his first promotional defeat over at BetWay.
In the night’s co-headliner, one-time light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith has been drawn against another emerging Brazilian striker – taking on Johnny Walker over the course of three rounds in an eye-catching showdown.
Making his first outing since suffering an ankle injury against Magomed Ankalaev in his most recent walk last July, Nebraska veteran, Smith is closing as a very slight underdog to take out the Rio de Janiero native at +105.
Stopping Scottish grappler, Paul Craig with elbow strikes at UFC 283 back in January of home soil, Walker, another product of Dana White’s Contender Series, is himself closing as a betting favorite at -120 to hand Smith his second consecutive defeat.
Undefeated Portmarnock talent, Ian Machado Garry also returns in North Carolina this weekend – with a chance to break into the welterweight division’s top-15 rankings when pitted with Californian striking veteran, Daniel Rodriguez.
Yet to go the distance throughout his 18 fight winning career, lodging an impressive seven knockout wins and a further 11 triumphs via submission, Almeida is a massive -350 betting favorite to finish the fight against Rozenstruik this weekend – via any method, in fact.
