This evening’s (Sat., July 22, 2017) UFC on FOX 25 produced a wholly exciting night full of close, back-and-forth battles and exciting knockouts from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

In the main event, former middleweight champion Chris Weidman met rising 25-year-old Kelvin Gastelum. In an inspiring show of heart, Weidman used a gritty wrestling-based game to survive being dropped to dominate Gastelum in the middle rounds, securing a picturesque arm triangle choke to land an absolutely crucial win in a must-win bout.

Gritty fan favorite underdog Darren Elkins met New York native Dennis Bermudez in the co-main event, winning one of the night’s closest battles by split decision.

The main event of UFC on FOX 25 featured a middleweight tilt between Weidman and Gastelum. The action took place inside Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

Weidman threw out a leg kick early in the bout. Gastelum blocked a head kick. A right hand found the mark for the former middleweight champion. He went for the takedown and got it. Gastelum created a scramble, but Weidman stood in control. A knee was there for Weidman.

The “All-American” maintained top control and was in side control. He went for the arm of his opponent. He went for a kimura, but it allowed Gastelum to stand up. He dropped Weidman with a left hand, but the former champion survived the round.

A leg kick was there for Gastelum early in the second stanza. They tied up and Weidman pushed his opponent against the fence. He tripped Gastelum and went for the back. Gastelum got up, but Weidman dumped him back down. He remained in control for the rest of the round.

At the start of the first round, Gastelum came out swinging. He stuffed a takedown. Weidman complained about a finger in the eye, but referee “Big” John McCarthy said there was no poke. Weidman let his hands fly. A jab connected for Gastelum. A right hand landed for the “All-American.”

Gastelum avoided a takedown, but Weidman grabbed a hold of the body. Weidman scored his seventh takedown of the fight. Weidman locked in the arm triangle. Gastelum was forced to tap.

Dennis Bermudez (16-7) fell short in his bout against Darren Elkins (23-5).

Bermudez and Elkins did battle inside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The bout served as the co-main event of UFC on FOX 25.

Immediately Bermudez went for a jumping knee. He got in a leg kick. Elkins landed a punch off a clinch break. He then landed a left hand. Bermudez slipped off a high kick. Elkins got a hold of his back. “The Menace” was able to break free.

Elkins ended up taking his opponent down again and went for a rear-naked choke. Instead, Bermudez powered out. The round ended with Elkins pushing his opponent against the fence.

Bermudez began round two swinging. He threatened with a takedown attempt, but nothing doing. A combination was there for “The Menace.” Bermudez scored a takedown. Elkins got up, but his back was against the fence. He reversed the position. The round ended with Elkins in control.

The final frame was underway and the two weren’t shy on offense. They tied up in the corner and neither man could get an edge. A left hand was there for Bermudez followed by a right hand. The final horn sounded with Bermudez avoiding a takedown.

Elkins nabbed the split decision victory.

Final Result: Darren Elkins def. Dennis Bermudez via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Thomas Almeida (22-2) couldn’t top Jimmie Rivera (21-1).

Almeida and Rivera did battle inside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The bout opened the main card of UFC on FOX 25.

The two met at the center of the Octagon to begin the fight. A right hand landed for Almeida and Rivera connected with a left hook to the body. “El Terror” dropped his opponent with a right hand. Almeida recovered and the action was back to standing quickly.

Another right hand dropped Almeida, who had been finding success with leg kicks. A knee to the body connected for Rivera. A leg kick was there for Rivera. A flurry from Almeida ended the round.

A knee to the body was there for Almeida early in the second stanza. “El Terror” kept finding the chin of his opponent. Almeida rocked Rivera with a left hook. The horn sounded and it Almeida had Rivera’s attention.

Knowing that the judges probably had the fight even, Rivera scored a takedown early in the final frame. Almeida got up and broke off. A right hand off a leg kick found the mark for “El Terror.” He landed another hook that had his opponent off balanced.

Rivera grabbed a hold of his opponent and pushed him against the fence but the control didn’t last. The final horn sounded with both men trading punches.

All three judges scored the fight for Rivera.

Final Result: Jimmie Rivera def. Thomas Almeida via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-26, 30-27)
