The final ratings are in for UFC on FOX 28.

The show pulled in 2,037,000 viewers, which is up 15 percent from the record-low of 1,771,000 viewers that was brought in by the Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Derek Brunson fight.

By looking back on the history books, the previous two events that did better than UFC on FOX 28 as of late was back in April that was headlined by Demetrious Johnson vs. Wilson Reis and going back to the 2016 show headlined by Carlos Condit vs. Demian Maia.

The good news is that the show peaked big in the main event, which ended up being the highest-rated part of the show when it did 2,731,000 viewers.

Keep in mind that the historically, the longer the main event goes, the better viewership is.

Despite the fact that it was still among the lowest-rated UFC events on FOX, the show did better than it was expected to do by the media due in large part to the lack of marquee stars.

The prelims drew 1,216,000 viewers on FOX, which marks the best prelims on FOX since the prelims that were leading to the Holly Holm vs. Valentina Shevchenko fight in 2016.

The main event saw Jeremy Stephens pick up a knockout victory over Josh Emmett on Saturday night at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida on big FOX.

Going into this event, there were several fight fans and members of the media who criticized the promotion for booking this fight as the main event had a lack of star power between the two fighters.

The event had to go up some tough competition as they went head-to-head with Olympics on NBC and the Golden State Warriors vs. Oklahoma City Thunder game on ABC.

Surging UFC featherweight Jeremy Stephens picked up a third straight win with a brutal knockout finish of Josh Emmett (watch the highlights) in the main event of last weekend’s (Sat., February 24, 2018) UFC on FOX 28 from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, but the victory didn’t come without a heap of controversy.

After rocking Emmett with a pinpoint left hand in the second round, ‘Lil’ Heathen’ followed him to the ground with what appeared to be a possibly illegal knee and two elbows that hit him in the back of the head. Emmett and his team were irate after the fight and revealed plans to appeal the defeat.

The results of that appeal, although appeals are rarely successful, remains to be seen, but for now, Stephens has earned a significant boost up the official UFC rankings. For the win over Emmett, he rose three spots to No. 5 on the 145-pound ranks, sending Emmett down two spots to No. 6.

The Orlando event also saw some movement at 205 pounds, where Ilir Latifi also rose up three spots to No. 5 for his impressive submission win over Ovince Saint Preux, who dropped one spot to No. 6.

Marion Reneau also continued to inch up the women’s bantamweight rankings after a shocking comeback submission over Sara McMann following a first round where she was controlled on the ground, rising up a spot to No. 7 and sending McMann to No. 8.

The UFC put on a banger of a card with UFC on FOX 28 in Orlando on Saturday night featuring contenders emerging, veterans picking up massive wins, and a night full of brutal finishes.

Max Griffin, Ilir Latifi, and Jeremy Stephens picked up big victories, and the landscapes of several weight classes changed overnight.

Let’s take a look at what’s next for Saturday night’s UFC on FOX 28 winners:

5. Jéssica Andrade vs. Winner Of Rose Namajunas vs Joanna J?drzejczyk II

Andrade looked the best she’s ever looked on Saturday, dominating Tecia Torres en route to a clear cut decision victory.

The women’s strawweight division is sort of in limbo right now with Rose and Joanna running it back. Namajunas is now the champion of the division, and Andrade has earned another shot at the belt. Now on a two-fight win streak, Andrade deserves the winner of Namajunas vs. J?drzejczyk II, which is going down at UFC 223 in April.

In a division lacking top talent, Andrade is making quite the name for herself. Although she came up short against J?drzejczyk, she’s shown the necessary improvements to compete with the top strawweights, so don’t be surprised if the UFC were to put her in a title fight next.

The overnight ratings for UFC on FOX 28 (also known as UFC Orlando) have been released.

Despite the fact that the main event saw an exciting finish, the show pulled in 1,826,000 viewers. Keep in mind that these numbers will likely increase once the final viewership ratings are released on Tuesday morning.

These overnight ratings did beat the latest UFC on FOX event by 15 percent, which took place just last month and pulled in the all-time record-low 1,593,000. That show was headlined by a Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Derek Brunson main event.

UFC on FOX 28 also beat the 1,640,000 previous record low set by a Chris Weidman vs. Kelvin Gastelum main event that went down last July.

It should be noted that the fast nationals measure (overnight ratings) is what’s on the FOX affiliates from 8-10 p.m. in the Pacific time zone. These numbers do not count the overrun hour or DVR numbers, which will be made available on Tuesday morning, and posted here on the site.

On top of a heap of controversy, UFC featherweight Josh Emmett is dealing with a serious injury suffered in his second-round knockout loss to Jeremy Stephens (highlights here) at last night’s (Sat., Feb. 24, 2018) UFC on FOX 28 from Orlando, Florida.

Following a chaotic ending where Emmett was dropped by a huge left hook from “Lil’ Heathen” and then hit with an arguably illegal knee and what appeared to be two incredibly brutal, illegal elbows to the back of Emmett’s head, Emmett’s Team Alpha Male revealed he was planning to appeal the loss after his head coach Urijah Faber blasted the non-call on social media.

Emmett is currently dealing with some potentially more serious ramifications from the strikes in question, however, as ESPN’s Brett Okamoto stated that Emmett’s team told him after the fight that the featherweight had suffered three harrowing fractures in his orbital bone as a result of the controversial finish:

To no one’s surprise, Stephens defended himself and the finish during the card’s post-fight show, saying that the knee was legal because Emmett took one hand off the ground even though it’s illegal to knee any opponent whose knees are down on the mat and offering the view that Emmett turning his head in the heat of battle made it impossible to call the split-second elbows illegal.

Video replay – something was not available to referee Dan Miragliotta during the bout – showed that the elbows absolutely hit Emmett in the back of the head, but it’s unknown if those were the blows that injured Emmett so badly.

It very well could have been the two fight-ending shots that were straight to his face that broke his orbital, but regardless, Emmett was seriously hurt and the blows seemed unnecessary, so the UFC Orlando main event will remain shrouded in controversy.

No ref is perfect, but the rules may need to be reviewed if fighters continue to be injured following illegal moves that, at the very least, should at least justify a break in the action.

What was your take on the controversy currently swarming MMA today?
