The big question on everyone’s mind today was, “Who will the UFC find to fight Hector Lombard?”

Well, the answer may not be who they expected. Lombard went to Twitter to call out Michael Bisping in hopes of drawing “The Count” as Brian Stann’s replacement. Unfortunately for Lombard, it appears Bisping suffered an injury in training and has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 149 bout against Tim Boetsch.

The UFC broke the news late Thursday night on their Web site. Lombard will now step in for Bisping at UFC 149.

This may turn out to be good news for the Cuban fighter as Boetsch is a similar fighter to Stann, whom Lombard was in camp preparing to face. There is also less pressure in a fight with Boetsch as most of the attention will be firmly placed on Jose Aldo and Erik Koch in the lead up to the card.

There is no word on the type of injury that Bisping suffered, though it was bad enough that he had to pull out of the fight. Bisping vs. Boetsch was originally slated for UFC 148, but was moved to the Calgary event to give the card a bit more star power.

This move also helps to strengthen the Calgary event which just saw Mauricio Rua moved to the UFC on FOX 4 card.

Hopefully this is the last of the injury news for the week. I don’t think I can take much more of this. I can only imagine how stressful this has been for Joe Silva who has to play magician to save these cards.

UFC 149 takes place July 21 at the Saddledome in Calgary, Canada.

UFC newcomer Hector Lombard was supposed to headline UFC on Fox 4 until a separated shoulder forced Brian Stann to withdraw from the main event match-up. Needless to say, this has put Lombard’s initial fight in the UFC on temporary stand-by.

Lombard may have found a perfect solution, which resulted in him taking to his Twitter account on Wednesday, challenging another middleweight title contender and former Ultimate Fighter winner, Michael “The Count” Bisping.

Lombard simply tweeted, “Bisping I’m calling you out.”

This is definitely a fight that would be accepted by fans and would make the most sense in terms of relevancy to a title shot.

Since the UFC has already named Brandon Vera vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as the new main event for the UFC on Fox 4, UFC 149 would be the more logical card to change.

Bisping’s current UFC 149 opponent is Tim Boetsch, a good fighter in the UFC whom many do not see as a title contender at the moment.

Bisping has been a very reliable and solid competitor inside of the Octagon but lacks a solid top-five win. A win over Boetsch would mean little for Bisping in terms of receiving a title opportunity.

Lombard is riding a 25-consecutive unbeaten streak into the UFC and I think that would be just the recipe if Bisping wants a UFC title shot.

As for benefiting Lombard, Bisping is a top-five contender with a big name, and a win over “The Count” would immediately silence any doubters.

Bisping would be the better pure striker but Lombard brings a wide array of powerful strikes that are somewhat unpredictable.

This would serve as a very entertaining fight for fans and should easily determine who is the No. 1 contender for the middleweight championship.

Let’s just see if the Dana White and the UFC takes this opportunity and makes it happen.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Brandon Vera to Headline UFC on Fox 4

After news broke Wednesday afternoon that Brian Stann was out of the main event for UFC on Fox 4, there were concerns that the UFC would be unable to find a new bout suitable for the top spot. Well after some deliberation, it appears that Joe Silva has come to a decision.

Just minutes ago the UFC broke the news that Brandon Vera would be facing former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event. Rua was originally slated to fight at UFC 149 in Calgary, Alberta, but when Thiago Silva went down with an injury, Rua’s future on the card was up in the air.

This is a case of the UFC making the best out of a bad situation, and for some, the fight is more deserving of the top spot. There were concerns that UFC fans were not familiar enough with Hector Lombard, which would have been disastrous on Fox.

This summer has been an absolute nightmare for the Zuffa brass as they’ve had to constantly rearrange cards due to so many injuries. Though they have “saved” the Fox event, they weakened UFC 149 and, in the process, UFC on Fuel TV: Munoz vs. Weidman.

I love the idea of seeing Shogun on Fox as he’s arguably the most exciting fighter on the roster. Even his boring fights keep me on the edge of my seat, however few they may be. Vera has also been exciting at times, and a win over Rua will vault him back into relevancy.

Shoulder Injury Bumps Brian Stann Out of UFC on FOX 4 Fight Against Hector Lombard

(I know, dude. I know.)

I think we can officially call it a “wave” of injuries now: The latest UFC fighter to withdraw from an upcoming marquee matchup is middleweight Brian Stann, who will not be making his UFC on FOX 4 main event date with former Bellator champ Hector Lombard due to a shoulder injury. According to MMA Fighting, Stann will not require surgery, but will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks.

No word yet on who will come in to replace Stann against Lombard, if anybody — but theoretically, that person will need a strong chin if he hopes to last past the first round. The co-main event for UFC on FOX 4 (August 4th, Los Angeles) is a just-as-marketable light-heavyweight feature between Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader, which could be bumped to the top as a last resort. We’ll keep you posted when we know more.

And the UFC’s summer of injuries continues.

Brian Stann was scheduled to welcome Hector Lombard into the UFC at UFC on Fox 4 in Anaheim, California on August 4th. The bout would be the main event of the card and promised to be an exciting scrap between two of the division’s heaviest hitters.

According to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com, Stann has reportedly suffered a shoulder injury and will be pulled from the fight. The injury will not require surgery, but it will keep Stann sidelined for roughly six to eight weeks.

Details are sketchy as to how Stann injured his shoulder, but it was bad enough to force him from the fight. Helwani reports that there has been no one tapped to replace Stann as of yet.

Brian Stann was looking to get back into title contention, and a win over the former Bellator middleweight champion would have been a huge step in that direction. The shoulder injury will now halt any momentum that Stann had built and will send him back down the middleweight pecking order.

For Lombard, this may not be the greatest of news either. Many saw Stann as a winnable fight, as he’s mainly known just for having heavy hands. Whoever the UFC finds to replace the “All American” will provide a much different stylistic matchup.

I know I speak for everyone when I say that I’m getting very tired of all of these injuries. At this point, the UFC’s biggest concern is keeping their fighters healthy. Unfortunately, it just seems that when it rains it pours, and the UFC is apparently in the middle of monsoon season.

Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado Booked for UFC on FOX 4, Following Chad Griggs Withdrawal

(I gotta admit, the man knows how to fill out a singlet.)

Due to an undisclosed injury, Chad Griggs won’t be making his light-heavyweight debut against Phil Davis at UFC on FOX 4 in August, which is probably for the best. (Not trying to hate on you, Grave Digger; it was just a bad matchup, that’s all). Coming in for Davis is an Octagon newcomer who will probably be an even heavier underdog than Griggs would have been — undefeated Team Nogueira product Wagner “Caldeirao” Prado.

Prado’s 8-0 record (seven by KO/TKO) looks good on paper, but his competition has been entry-level at best; his last three opponents had a combined record of 1-4 at the time of their fights. Taking on a world-class fighter in your UFC debut after a couple years spent beating on local yokels is rarely a recipe for success. So, barring any Dos Santos vs. Werdum-caliber world-shocking, Mr. Wonderful should have this one in the bag.

After the jump: The full lineup of UFC on FOX 4, plus two videos of Prado doing work.
