UFC on Fox 6 is set for Jan. 26,  and will feature a flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson.

Though the night’s main event promises to deliver, perhaps the most anticipated bout of the evening comes in the form of a lightweight scrap between two former WEC title players, namely Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis.

Both Cerrone and Pettis have made waves in the UFC since making the jump to Zuffa’s primary promotion, and their impending bout is one that will have nostalgic MMA fans salivating. Each fighter is highly regarded for their respective skill levels, but it’s the flare they fight with that has earned each man his fan favorite label.

Cerrone‘s trainer and cornerman Greg Jackson expects the match to be a good one, something he recently expressed to Sherdog:

I don’t think it’s going to be a typical fight anywhere just because both of these guys are so talented. It’s going to be one of those fights where you have to fight for small things and try to get the advantage where you can. It’s a real war. I’m really looking forward to the fight. Pettis is amazing. He comes from a great camp, and I think it’s going to be a hell of a fight.

Jackson went on to comment on Cerrone‘s preparedness for Pettis‘s unorthodox techniques, like the “Showtime Kick,” noting that “Cowboy” will “be ready for that.”

And he’ll have to be, if he hopes to slow the dynamic Pettis who seems no farther than two wins from a shot at Ben Henderson’s lightweight crown. Indeed, a victory for “Showtime” at UFC on Fox 6 might just ensure a redo of the WEC‘s last ever fight.

Cerrone himself isn’t too far removed from the lightweight title either. He’s 6-1 since hooking up with the UFC, and is coming off a spectacular knockout of Melvin Guillard.

Between title implications riding on both sides, the immense talent shared by Cerrone and Pettis and the strong likelihood that it will be an action-packed affair, Greg Jackson seems to be very much on the mark in his assessment of the contest.

“It’s going to be one hell of a fight.”

‘Changed’ Rampage on Teixeira Bout: ‘I Really Want This One

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has turned over a new leaf, and it all started in the practice room.

The former UFC light heavyweight champ has found renewed motivation as an underdog heading into his January 26 bout with hard-hitting contender Glover Teixeira.

In several heartfelt Twitter posts, Rampage talked about making improvements and a hope to finish out his UFC contract on a high note.

People will always do more for what they want to do,than what they have to do….I really want this next one!

While impossible to change overnight, we all can improve 1% a day. 4 months later it looks like you changed overnight!

Unfortunately, it’ll take more than a few motivational posts on Twitter to convince the masses Rampage is truly focused and prepared for an opponent like Teixeira, who is on a 17-fight win streak.

Rampage’s back is against the wall, and quite frankly, it isn’t looking good for the future Hall of Famer. He is coming off back-to-back losses to Jon Jones and Ryan Bader. The loss to Bader at UFC 144 stings especially for Rampage. He came into the fight a huge favorite against an end-of-the-line contender. The bout was even held at his old stomping grounds in Saitama, Japan.

Instead of a focused and motivated Rampage, fans witnessed a shell of a former world champion miss weight and gas in the first round. There was talk of a pre-fight injury, but at the end of the day, people only care about results.

It’s tough picking Rampage, who is coming off one of the worst performances of his career, against the red-hot Teixeira.

Even so, fans should be mindful of the fact that styles make fights. Rampage matches up incredibly well with Teixeira, who tends to push forward and get into wild pocket exchanges.

Despite taking a thrashing at UFC 153, Fabio Maldonado nearly put Teixeira’s lights out with a pair of well-placed counter hooks. Rampage is known for his devastating hooks and otherworldly knockout power. He also has the chin to absorb massive amounts of punishment.

A quick glance at Rampage’s Twitter account could also give fans hope for a vintage performance at UFC on Fox 6.

Rampage appears to finally be at peace with himself, and the typical trash talk and raunchy humor has been replaced with a more positive mindset.

The bout with Teixeira could be the final time fans ever see Rampage step foot in the Octagon. It’s the last fight on his UFC contract, and negotiations have stalled in talks of an extension.

Will Teixeira continue his climb to the top of the light heavyweight division, or does Rampage have a few tricks up his sleeve in his possible finale?

The UFC has officially released its promotional video for the upcoming UFC on FOX 6 event. The event will take place January 26th in Chicago.

You can find the video embedded in this article.

The event will be free and will feature a bevy of stacked fights. Among the fights scheduled are a light-heavyweight tilt between Ryan Bader and Vladimir Matyushenko, Clay Guida’s featherweight debut against Hatsu Hioki and a match where Canadian TJ Grant will look to continue his winning streak against Matt Wiman.

The main card is an excellent way to ring in the New Year and it will start off with a contenders fight in the featherweight division. Erik Koch will take on Ricardo Lamas to potentially determine the next challenger to Jose Aldo.

A clash of two exciting lightweights is also on tap for this event, as Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone will throw down to determine the next challenger to Benson Henderson’s lightweight crown.

The night doesn’t end there as the co-main event features an epic clash of 205’ers as the red-hot Glover Teixeira will welcome Quinton “Rampage” Jackson back into the Octagon. It will be Jackson’s first fight since his loss at UFC 144.

The night will end with a bang as flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will defend his title against new challenger and TUF 14 winner John Dodson.

Both men are coming off wins, with Johnson beating Joseph Benavidez for the inaugural flyweight title, and Dodson knocking out Jussier da Silva.

UFC on FOX 6 is a great way to be kicking off an action-packed 2013 schedule.

UFC on Fox: Fifth Installment Shows the UFC What the Fans Want to See

It seems like it should be easy enough. Build a card that people want to see and they will tune in on fight night to watch it. Intuitively, it could scarcely be any simpler.

Yet, despite its apparent simplicity, most of the UFC’s nationally televised cards have underwhelmed both casual fans and hardcores alike.

Earlier this year, I wrote a piece that criticised the UFC’s myopic handling of the Fox deal. It appeared as though they were unwilling to put any of their biggest stars on free television, instead saving them for short-term gains on pay-per-view.

While this criticism still holds true, the UFC has certainly adjusted its approach to booking its Fox shows. They might not be giving Georges St-Pierre away for free, but they are at least giving the mainstream audience something to get invested in.

It’s hardly a secret that fans are more inclined to tune in when something is at stake. And this means something genuinely has to be at stake, rather than simply claiming that the co-main and main event will determine the No. 1 contender—I’m talking to you, UFC on Fox 4.

Offering fights that are guaranteed to deliver in a qualitative sense is not a successful strategy in and of itself. Sure, the hardcore fans will tune in to watch Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller, but as far as the casuals are concerned, it might as well be Joe Bloggs vs. John Doe.

With UFC on Fox 5, Dana White and Co. figured out this axiom, serving up for mass consumption Benson Henderson vs. Nate Diaz. It was a stroke of genius on the part of the UFC’s matchmakers, coupling sure-fire action with genuine stakes.

Even though the fight ended up being about as one-sided as a match between Barcelona and Accrington Stanley, the ratings suggest that the UFC is on to a winning formula: a stacked card and a main event that offers something tangible to hook the casuals.

UFC on Fox 6 appears to stick to the same formula, boasting a compelling undercard and, again, a main event that has both stakes and the potential to deliver fireworks.

Having said that, I suspect that a flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson will struggle to attract viewers. The 125-pound division has not been established in the same way as the lightweight division and thus carries less drawing power at present.

The UFC may be hoping that the presence of “Rampage” Jackson will be enough to draw the casuals and expose them to the videogame-esque action that Johnson and Dodson will undoubtedly provide.

The UFC’s relationship with Fox may still be a work in progress, but even progress seemed like a distant possibility six months ago. We can be thankful that the UFC is finally heading in the right direction.
