Rory MacDonald Believes Trash Talking is Childish, Doesn’t Have a Place in MMA

Over the last couple of years, UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald has gained a reputation for wearing custom-made suits and carrying an icy demeanor whenever he’s talking about a fight.

Rarely does MacDonald ever seem to crack a smile, and his steely gaze is something akin to a predator quietly tracking its prey.

It’s earned him comparisons in jest to fictional characters like Patrick Bateman from American Psycho or Dexter Morgan from the popular Showtime series Dexter. MacDonald isn’t playing a character, however, because being detached from his fights emotionally allows him to just focus on an opponent and not get drawn into some ugly verbal war with another fighter.

So when MacDonald’s latest opponent Jake Ellenberger took aim at him on Twitter, he did his best to ignore it and just keep his sights on the fight at hand.

MacDonald admits that he never really took Ellenberger for a trash talker, but nothing he’s said or will possibly say can rattle the young Canadian before they meet in the Octagon.

“I guess I didn’t really see it coming, but it doesn’t really bother me to tell you the truth,” MacDonald told Bleacher Report. “It’s just talk. People have been talking s—t about me my whole life so I’ve gotten pretty used to dealing with it. At the end of the day I usually come out on top so I’m not really worried about his talking. It doesn’t really bother me.”

At just 23 years old, MacDonald is five years younger than his next opponent, but when it comes to maturity he thinks he’s got the edge.

“I guess I shake my head sometimes. It comes across as kind of childish, and it just seems like there’s a lot of insecurities when people start talking like that or they’re just trying to get more fans or more attention on themselves, they’re trying to make themselves more confident. I really don’t know,” MacDonald said.

“I really just try to focus on myself and the martial arts side of things. It doesn’t really interest me, the whole s—t talking thing. When it happens I voice my opinion on it sometimes, but it’s very childish. I don’t really think it has a place in martial arts.

“It’s like the new model for promoting a fight in mixed martial arts. For me, I never understood it. It reminds me of high school sometimes. The way all the UFC fighters have been talking to each other, the way they have been very immature. The way people respond too has been on the most part immature as well. I think people need to learn how to keep it classy a little bit.”

MacDonald’s method of preparation doesn’t differ much based on anything an opponent says about or towards him leading up to a fight. It’s the cold, detached demeanor that MacDonald carries that earned him those notorious nicknames, but in a way they are quite fitting because that’s exactly the way he approaches a fight.

It’s not about what’s said before a fight that matters to MacDonald—only how he executes inside the cage.

“I don’t ever know the people I fight at all. I just know their name and I show up on the night, they show up, and we fight in a cage and we paid for it,” said MacDonald. “That’s what we like to do.

“Nothing changes, it’s a fight. It is a bigger scale fight I guess, but I don’t really pay too much attention to it. I just focus on the fight part of it and the rest of it will take care of itself. I kind of felt like my career has been that way. I’ve moved up the ranks pretty fast because of the way I’ve performed. I don’t think I need to change anything.”

Whether Jake Ellenberger decides to continue his charge at MacDonald via Twitter or in interviews remains to be seen. MacDonald promises that no matter which way he swings, it won’t matter once they are locked in the Octagon together.

What’s most important to MacDonald isn’t what Ellenberger says, but how he performs. He’s got that part of the game locked down to a science.

“I think he’s a good fighter. He’s got a lot of good tools, but I think he’s got a lot of weaknesses as well,” MacDonald said of Ellenberger. “I think I’ll be able to exploit them quite well and I’m very confident that I’ll have a dominant victory.”

UFC on Fox 8 has been plagued by injuries over the last few days. One fight has been completely removed from the July 27 fight card and three others have received injury replacement opponents. One fight that has not changed and remains set is the co-main event between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger.

This is a very important bout in the UFC’s welterweight division. The 14-1 MacDonald is the third-ranked fighter in the division, while Ellenberger (29-6) is ranked fourth.  The winner of this fight, could very well be considered for next shot at the division’s title.

MacDonald joined the UFC in 2010. Since that time injuries have limited him to six fights in the Octagon, what follows are the ranking of those six fights with the promotion.

The injury roll call that began on Wednesday night for UFC on Fox 8 on July 27 has continued into Thursday.

The UFC announced on Wednesday that Matt Mitrione vs. Brendan Schaub was off the card. On Thursday, the promotion added two more changes to the upcoming event.

On July 7, Siyar Bahadurzada took to Instagram to display the design for his UFC on Fox 8 walkout shirt. Bahadurzada did not mention the sponsor of the shirt, but one can only hope that they did not roll the design into production.

Bahadurzada (21-5-1) has been pulled from the fight card due to injury and replaced by Bobby Voelker (24-9-0). Voelker will step in to face Robbie Lawler (20-9-0). It should be noted that Lawler was originally scheduled to face Tarec Saffiedine on the July 27 card.

Voelker is coming off a loss to Patrick Cote in his UFC debut. Prior to joining the promotion, he had gone 4-1 in Strikeforce. Lawler heads into the fight riding the momentum of a first-round Knockout of the Night win over Josh Koscheck at UFC 157. Lawler is in his second stint with the UFC.

Also off the Seattle fight card is Bobby Green, who was scheduled to fight Danny Castillo (15-5-0). Replacing Green will be Tim Means (18-4-1).

Means had an 11-fight unbeaten streak end during his last outing, dropping a unanimous decision to Jorge Masvidal at UFC on Fox 7. Castillo is 4-1 in his last five UFC fights. His most recent bout resulted in a unanimous-decision victory over Paul Sass.

UFC on Fox 8 will take place on July 27 from Seattle’s Key Arena and will be headlined by a title bout between flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and challenger John Moraga.

Matt Mitrione Out of UFC on Fox 8 With Injury, Buddy-Fight Against Brendan Schaub Cancelled

(Clearly, Matt Mitrione saw Brendan Schaub’s last match and is worried he can’t handle his riddum.)

Good buddies Brendan Schaub and Matt Mitrione were scheduled to fight one another at July 27th’s UFC on Fox 8 card, but a training injury suffered by Mitrione has, at least temporarily, halted the bout. MMA Fighting first passed along the bad news, citing sources close to the fight.

“The UFC was leaning towards re-booking the fight on a later card, and as a result, they decided to pull Schaub from the event in Seattle altogether,” MMAFighting reported.

Mitrione had previously said that he’d hate to knock out his friend Schaub, although the two heavyweights were at least pretending to dislike each other on twitter for a while. No official word yet on the specific nature of Mitrione’s injury or how long he will be out because of it. We’ll keep you posted as the story develops. Now that Schaub has his schedule cleared up, maybe it’s time to pursue that rematch with Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu? [Ed. note: Please, no, for the love of God.]

UFC on Fox 8 has lost one of its preliminary card bouts. The heavyweight scrap between Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub has been reportedly removed from the July 27 event.

A training camp injury suffered by Mitrione necessitated his removal from the fight card, according to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com. The website also reported that the fight would be rebooked on a future card and that Schaub would not get a replacement opponent.

Mitrione (6-2) and Schaub (9-3) both halted two-fight losing streaks in their last outings. Mitrione had dropped a decision to Cheick Kongo and been knocked out by Roy Nelson before earning a quick knockout over Phil De Fries in his most recent bout. Schaub had two first-round KO losses to his name before rebounding with a unanimous-decision win over Lavar Johnson in his last fight.

The two fighters had been friendly, according to Schaub. Speaking to Rick J Lee, he said, “I love Matt, he knows this. I wish I could fight any other heavyweight, but you just can’t. One thing I can guarantee you is that Matt and I will put on a show.”

That friendship seemed to fade a bit when the two got in a Twitter war, which ended with Mitrione pretty much washing his hands of the friendship.

The fight was to be Mitrione’s first since he was briefly suspended for comments he made about transgender fighter Fallon Fox.

UFC on Fox 8 will take place on July 27 from the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington and will be headlined by a title fight between UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and John Moraga. The co-main event will be a welterweight scrap between highly ranked Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger.
