Fabricio Werdum is in his second stint with the UFC, but he has never headlined a fight card for the promotion. That will change on June 8 when he steps into the Octagon to meet Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event of UFC on Fuel 10.

Werdum’s first run with the UFC lasted four fights. During that span the world champion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu went 2-2.  His wins came over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera and his losses came against Andrei Arlovski and Junior dos Santos.

Following the loss to Dos Santos, Werdum was released from the promotion, a fact that did not sit well with him. Werdum told Porto Do Vale Tudo, via MiddleEasy.com, h/t PVT Magazine: “They kind of used me and threw me out. That UFC business is complicated. It’s tough to swallow that they would terminate your contract after two nice wins just because you lost the last one, regardless of how it happened.”

Since re-joining the promotion, Werdum has defeated Roy Nelson and Mike Russow and finds himself as the No. 3 fighter in the UFC heavyweight division heading into his matchup with Nogueira.

The bout between Werdum and Nogueira will mark the second time the two have met. In the first matchup, which took place in 2006 with Pride, Nogueira earned the unanimous decision victory. It will be interesting to see what a difference almost seven years makes for both fighters.

As a bit of a preview for the upcoming UFC on Fuel 10 fight card, take a look at Werdum’s win over Brandon Vera at UFC 85.

UFC on Fuel 10 Preview: Full Fight Video of Nogueira vs. Werdum 1

When Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum meet in the main event of UFC on Fuel 10, it will be the second time these two veteran fighters have faced each other in mixed martial arts combat. The first meeting between the two took place in 2006 under the Pride banner.

That bout was in the quarterfinal round of the 2006 Pride Openweight Grand Prix. Werdum defeated Alistair Overeem in the opening round via second-round submission while Nogueira advanced with a first-round submission victory over Wagner Martins.

Werdum carried a record of 8-1-1 heading into their bout. Nogueira, who had been fighting professionally since 1999, was 27-3-1-1.

The three-round contest was (obviously) fought under Pride rules, which extended the first round to 10 minutes while the second and third rounds were five minutes in length. Another important difference between Pride rules and the Unified Rules was the scoring. The entire fight was judged in Pride, much different than the round-by-round basis we see under the Unified Rules.

Nogueira would take the victory over Werdum, but would lose in the next round of the tournament, dropping a split decision to Josh Barnett.

Nogueira has fought ten times since their first meeting, going 6-4. During that span, he briefly held the UFC interim heavyweight title, winning the belt in a bout with Tim Sylvia and losing it to Frank Mir in his next contest. Nogueira last fought in October 2012, submitting Dave Herman with an armbar and earning “Submission of the Night” honors.

Werdum has fought 11 times since his first meeting with Nogueira, going 8-3.  Werdum is currently on a two-fight winning streak, defeating Roy Nelson and Mike Russow in those victories.

UFC on Fuel 10 will take place on June 8 from the Ginasio Paulo Sarasate in Fortaleza, Brazil.

UFC on Fuel TV 10: Nogueira’s Rematch with Werdum Could Turn to Swan Song Bout

In 2006, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira defeated Fabricio Werdum in a hard-fought match that went to decision. Nogueira was able to edge the young up-and-comer with crisper boxing, better cardio and the ability to remain one step ahead.

On June 8 at UFC on Fuel TV 10 from Brazil, one would be wise not to assume the same outcome will play out in the rematch.

For any old guard fan of the sport, Nogueira has been a staple of the top 10 for heavyweights. Unfortunately, for the nostalgic throngs, it is clear that time takes its toll on every man, and Nogueira has shown to be no different.

Nogueira has known since the fight was announced that the Werdum he would be facing was not the same man he faced in 2006. In an interview with MMAJunkie.com Radio, “Minotauro” said “I know it’s not going to be the same fight [as before].”

He went on to say, “I know he changed a lot. He improved his stand-up. So did I. I think I improved my wrestling, and my boxing is way better—my striking, too. I think I can hit harder than last time I fought him. It’s going to be a great fight.”

Despite Nogueira’s belief in his skills, as well as ample time to recommit them to perfection, he has remained inconsistent throughout the last four years of his storied career. He currently holds a 5-3 UFC record.

What is more telling than the record itself is the style of his losses The veteran’s strongest asset was always his persevering spirit, no matter how badly he was punished by an opponent. Recent years have seen that aura of invincibility fade. Nogueira can now be stopped, both by submission and knockout.

In contrast, Fabricio Werdum has continued to improved his skill set since the 2006 match. He has added solid striking to his already devastating ground skills. Simply put, Werdum’s skills have improved while Nogueira’s have continued to wane.

Werdum is likely aware of the fact that Nogueira is no longer capable of surviving all onslaughts. Werdum is sure to hold the upper hand in both the striking and grappling, while necessarily still respecting the tenacious vet enough to not make a costly error.

Werdum is considered by bookies and fans to likely find his way past Nogueira. He sits at as much as minus-300 according BetUS.com, while Nogueira is a plus-225 underdog.

UFC president Dana White told Tatame.com (h/t Bloody Elbow) a victory will ensure Fabricio a title shot. This adds extra incentive for Werdum to fight smart but also engage the former UFC and Pride Heavyweight Champion. A lackluster win will do Werdum no favors.

For Nogueira, he is fighting for his career, and so he will likely pull out all stops to show he is still a viable candidate in the division and the sport itself. Nogueira will almost certainly need to retire from the sport, and the UFC have given him a fitting platform to do so, as he could essentially pass the torch to Werdum.
