The UFC returns this weekend after a week off with an exciting card from across the pond.
Headlining the Fuel TV card will be interim bantamweight king RenanBarao who takes on American Michael McDonald. Both men are young fighters with big futures at 135.
Also on the card are some top British talent, as well as some intriguing prospects and veterans.
Here are some predictions you can take to the bank this weekend.
Interim bantamweight champion Renan “Barao” Pegado will meet Michael McDonald in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 7. Barao’s title will be on the line as he tangles with the brightest prospect competing at 135 pounds.

Interim bantamweight champion Renan “Barao” Pegado will meet Michael McDonald in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 7. Barao’s title will be on the line as he tangles with the brightest prospect competing at 135 pounds.
From a fan’s standpoint, this is a magnetic battle that will more than likely produce brutal flurries and high-octane aggression.
Both of these men show up to win, and they aim to win in extremely impressive fashion. The idea of fighting not to lose is a completely foreign concept for these two, and that, coupled with their technical skills, will lead to a certified barn burner. In fact, this could be the best Bantamweight bout we’ve seen in years.
But there are some thought-provoking points to this affair that need be examined, meticulously.
See, Barao will enter this bout with very little to gain as a professional fighter.
The Brazilian is enjoying one of the most impressive win streaks in MMA history. The man’s gone unbeaten in his last 30 fights, with his lone blemish being a unanimous decision loss to Joao Paulo RodriguesdeSouza, which Barao suffered in his first professional fight.
He entered the UFC ranks and rattled off four consecutive victories, including impressive wins over Urijah Faber, Scott Jorgensen and Brad Pickett.
He earned his interim belt by besting Faber at UFC 149, and at this point, appears the clear-cut stud of the division (until Dominick Cruz makes his long-awaited return to action).
But Barao may run into a problem on February 16th.
Michael McDonald is the sleeper assassin of the division. Heavy hands, crisp combinations and an uncanny killer instinct make for a threat that few fighters possess. His willingness to take risks and his one-punch power makes for a difficult challenge to overcome.
However, McDonald has yet to reach the upper echelon of celebrity. He’s a recognizable young man, and most would label him a future superstar, but at this point in time, his stock isn’t exactly exploding through the roof, a hail of fragmented wood and split shingles spraying the sky in the wake of genuine stardom.
McDonald simply doesn’t carry that kind of weight in MMA at this point.
That fact alone makes this an incredibly dangerous bout for the interim champion.
If Barao puts McDonald away in impressive fashion, he’s managed to dispose of a relatively green opponent. In the eyes of pundits, the experience disparity will warrant reason to attempt to discredit Barao, reaching for strings, declaring he’s done little other than beating a “good but ill prepared” foe.
Flip the coin and Barao faces similar scrutinization. If McDonald batters the interim champ, the Brazilian’s legitimacy will immediately be called into question. His accomplishments thus far will likely see belittling, with critics attempting to discredit the man’s previous victories.
I can hear it now…Faber was over the hill! The Pickett fight was luck! Jorgenson is nothing more than a fading fighter…a shell of his former self!
This bout, in all actuality, is an amazing clash of styles between two superb combatants. Barao is every bit as dangerous as he’s been billed, and McDonald, a man with bricks for fists, may truly be the future of the division. However, it’s the kind of match-making that leaves (unwarranted) room for berating.
I anticipate a fantastic battle next weekend. And while RenanBarao stands to gain little from this fight in the eyes of many, the truth is this: If the Brazilian trounces McDonald, he’ll have eliminated four hazardous foes in succession, all of which are world ranked.
Should the interim champ come up short against McDonald, he loses virtually everything: his belt, his momentum, his unbeatable aura and sadly, the mystique he’s worked so hard to establish throughout his career.
While it shouldn’t be, this is a lose-lose battle for Barao, regardless of outcome. There’s virtually nothing to gain by this match. A win for Barao does little, a loss send him spiraling in the ranks and may very well trigger a barrage of insults from keyboard warriors…He was never that good to begin with!
It’s tough to be an elite champion in a relatively thin division, and this is the kind of fight that echoes that sentiment.

Motivation is in no short supply during February. While some fighters have golden opportunities coming their way, others are looking for a big win to preserve their jobs.
Regardless of what each fighter has on the line, there are several stars who simply cannot afford to lose. Here is a look at 16 MMA fighters who are on the hot seat in the month of February.

As confirmed by the UFC UK twitter account, British “model/dancer/singer/actress/presenter” Carly Baker will appear as a guest Octagon Girl for UFC on FUEL 7: Barao vs. McDonald, February 16th at the Wembley Arena in London. Hailing from South West London, Carly has been modeling since the age of 14, and was formerly a member of the pop music groups Mynxsters, Holla, and SW1. (Never heard of any of them, but I’m going to assume they were all fantastic.) She has been featured in pictorials for Nuts, Zoo, FHM, and The Sun, and caught some attention after appearing in this music video.

Although UFC on Fuel TV 7 in London will star plenty of notable fighters on a tightly-packed MMA card, there’s sure to be a lot of attention on the company’s newest talent.
That would be Carly Baker, the promotion’s first European Octagon Girl.
As announced on the UFC UK Twitter feed, Baker will be making her UFC debut at the Wembley Arena on Feb. 16, where she will be on “round card duty” for the duration of the 12-fight event:
Baker is a notable glamour model in the European scene, who has previously worked for PlayStation, FHM and Nuts Magazine. According to her official website, Baker has also been a previous Miss Wimbledon candidate as the “Miss Great Britain” entry.
Baker also turned heads in 2011 when she appeared in a photo shoot as Mortal Kombat character Sonya Blade (via Ve3troGamesMedia), cosplaying as part of a promotion for the series’ video game reboot.
Earlier last year, Baker was thrust into the UK news spotlight when her boyfriend, famed Welsh cricketer Tom Maynard, died in an assumed suicide.
Shortly following a drunk-driving incident in his Mercedes C250 coupe last June (via Daily Mail UK), Maynard reportedly stepped on an electric rail at Wimbledon Park Station, and his body was not found until an hour later.
UFC on Fuel TV 7 will feature a bantamweight title fight as its main event, with interim champion RenanBarao making his first title defense against Michael MacDonald. Barao rides a 30-fight undefeated streak going into the match, capped off with a 4-0 UFC stretch against Urijah Faber, Scott Jorgensen, Brad Pickett and Cole Escovedo.

Mixed martial arts fans like fun fights—especially when a belt is on the line.
Sure, we moan and complain about the merits of, say, ChaelSonnen talking his way into another title shot (this time, in a division he hasn’t fought in since his first stint with the UFC) or, in more recent news, Anthony Pettis receiving a crack at champ Jose Aldo despite having never fought in the featherweight division. But, in spite of our reservations, we still obsesses over and talk about every little bit of news that trickles out about these bouts.
Now, I’m not saying that this is an inherently bad thing. Hell, who wouldn’t be excited for another super fight? However, lost in all the championship chatter is one bout that, in my opinion, is a surefire candidate for fight of the year: RenanBarao vs. Michael McDonald.
I know, it’s an interim title fight, so technically it doesn’t hold the same weight as, say, Nick Diaz getting a shot at Georges St-Pierre’s welterweight crown, but that doesn’t mean MMA fans shouldn’t be excited. Unlike the recent string of championship bout bookings, both Barao and McDonald earned their way to this bantamweight battle, leaving a myriad of former champs and top contenders in their wake.
If you look at the list of UFC title holders, not a single fighter on the list has a lengthier unbeaten streak than the interim 135 lb. champ.
Yes, I know that he hasn’t faced the same level of competition as Anderson Silva or Benson Henderson, but with recent wins over the likes of Urijah Faber, Scott Jorgensen and Brad Pickett, Barao has proven that he is an elite bantamweight. If it wasn’t for Dominick Cruz’s string of injuries, the Brazilian could have already been the king at 135.
As for the fiery 22-year-old challenger, McDonald is a star on the rise and boasts an impressive resume of his own, most recently knocking out former WEC champ Miguel Torres. “Mayday” could very well be a lighter weight version of Jon Jones if he can capture UFC gold at such a young age.
When you look at this matchup, it’s hard to pick a favorite because both men are just so well-rounded and explosive. While I can’t guarantee who will win, I can say without a doubt that this fight is going to be an all-out war.
It’s a shame that the UFC relegated this battle to a Fuel TV card as many fans will likely miss out on seeing all the action. The promotion should have done a better job at pushing this fight because both men have a chance at becoming big stars in the near future—should either of them dethrone Cruz.
While I don’t plan on missing any upcoming championship bouts (who’s excited for Ronda Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche?), but Barao vs. McDonald is one fight I’d rather lose a limb than miss.
