On Friday night, Ian McCall and Demetrious Johnson will face off in a rematch of their previous fight which ended in a draw—but not without some controversy.

There’s a full fight card on Friday, with four fights on the main card, and eight on the preliminary card on Fuel TV. Many are expecting the McCall and Johnson fight to be the best fight of the night.

But the main event can’t be considered the show stealer, so what other fight could steal the show?

If you asked me, I’d say that it will be the Leonard Garcia and Matt Grice fight on Fuel.

We all know about how Garcia fights. He can fight technically, then once he gets tired, he starts winging punches, throwing haymakers and being generally crazy in the cage, and it is fantastic.

Garcia puts on some of the most exciting fights in MMA, and has earned fight of the night honors four times and fight of the year once.

His battles with Nam Phan both earned fight of the night, a pair of decisions that were split between the two. He also won fight of the night for a split draw with George Roop in the WEC, and earned fight of the year for the memorable battle with Chan Sung Jung at WEC 48.

Garcia’s opponent is Matt Grice, who is making his sixth appearance inside the Octagon.

Grice has compiled a record of 14-4, and has won eight fights with striking related stoppages. His willingness to throw hands will favor Garcia, and will lead to a fantastic fight.

Even better for Garcia is the fact that he has never been knocked out, and Grice has lost due to strikes twice.

The odds are stacked in Garcia’s favor, but whatever goes down, this fight will be an all-out brawl.

UFC “Quick Break”: Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall

Whether you just have a short downtime during work, or don’t want a lengthy breakdown, these “Quick Breaks” are for you. “Quick Breaks” are short breakdowns of upcoming fights. In a summed up focus of strengths, weaknesses and variables; this will analyze what could happen in the fight, and end with this writer’s prediction.

The UFC will host its third event on the FX network this Friday night. It will all go down at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. Fuel TV will host eight prelim fights, followed by four main card fights on FX starting at 9:00PM EST. Headlining the main card is the highly-anticipated rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall.

In the blue corner you have Ian McCall. “Uncle Creepy” as he is also known, is a strong and exciting fighter who put on a show against Johnson in their first meeting. His wrestling and general control dictated a good deal of the fight, and ultimately ended up with him in a dominant position over Johnson at the end of the fight.

McCall’s UFC career is only that one fight, which was a draw; but that fight proved to UFC fans that he was not just some guy with a mustache, but a very credible contender.

In the red corner you have Demetrious Johnson. “Might Mouse” has been around the main stage longer than McCall, and he always puts on exciting fights. His speed and cardio is astounding, as he continues to keep a constant pace of swift movement. He too will be looking to stop the critics who think McCall was the real victor of the last fight.

This fight is intriguing because it is a rematch of knowledge. We will see which fighter learned the most from the first fight, and how they will apply new strategies and improve on old ones. This fight will be between two guys who have something very important to prove, but also will be battling for the spot to face Joseph Benavidez for the inaugural Flyweight title.

Both men are fast, strong and have great cardio. McCall might finish what he started in the last fight, but Johnson should never be counted out or taken lightly. Johnson could very well end this on the feet, or stay off the ground and win a decision. Time will tell, and come this Friday, we will have only one more step to crowning a brand new UFC champion.

Prediction: Ian McCall wins via unanimous decision.

Controversial decisions are nothing new in UFC, but luckily there are times when such decisions can be rectified. That will be the case on Friday as Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall will face off in a flyweight bout after the pair battled to a draw just three months ago.

Johnson was initially declared the winner by decision, but it was later determined that there had been an error in the scoring calculations, so the fight was ruled a split draw. Johnson and McCall will look to settle their feud decisively on Friday as they will headline the third UFC on FX event.

Keys to Johnson Win

When Johnson and McCall met for the first time, there was no question that it was a closely-contested bout. After the botched scorecards were squared away, two judges had scored it a draw with the other giving it to Johnson. Perhaps Johnson was slightly better than McCall, but it truly was too close to determine a winner. With that said, Johnson shouldn’t deviate much from his game plan following the first fight.

Johnson has an advantage over McCall in terms of his ability on the mat, and that is something that Johnson must utilize on Friday. If he can hold McCall at bay by locking him up in submission maneuvers, it may not make for the most exciting fight, but it will bode well for Johnson. McCall is very versatile and dangerous, so the more Johnson can keep him down, the better.

Keys to McCall Win

McCall is such a good fighter, because he is capable of winning a bout in a number of different ways. But against Johnson, he may want to focus on standing toe to toe and trading blows. It’s impossible to impress the judges if you are immobilized, and that is something that Johnson is so good at doing. In order to ensure that he doesn’t get caught in any sticky situations, McCall should try to turn it into a slug fest.

His first fight with Johnson was a bit too close for comfort, and he was very lucky to escape with a draw rather than a loss. This match has very high stakes riding on it, as the winner will get to fight for the UFC Flyweight Championship down the line. One false move on the canvas could spell doom for McCall, and that means he should lessen risk as much as possible.

Predictions

This fight could literally go either way, but my money is on Johnson to prevail by majority decision. Johnson has to be the hungrier and angrier fighter, since he probably feels like the first bout was stolen from him. That should ensure that he is extra motivated for the tilt, and it will result in a much more convincing outing.

UFC on FX: Demetrius Johnson and Ian McCall Take Two

Imagine, if you will, being Demetrius Johnson. After a grueling three rounds against Ian McCall, the mostly unknown import from the independent scene, your hand is raised high. You’re one step closer to your dream of becoming the UFC’s first flyweight champion.

Elation. Pride. Accomplishment. The swirl of emotion that only comes from winning at the highest levels of competition. It’s a great feeling.

And for Johnson, it lasted about 15 minutes. That’s when Australian officials determined that the scorecards had been added incorrectly. The fight was actually a draw. Johnson and McCall, part of a four man tournament, would have to run it back.

For someone receiving such monumental news, Johnson took it in stride. There were no histrionics, with the exception of Joseph Benavidez‘s hilarious facial expressions at the post-fight presser when he heard the news. Johnson was immediately focused on doing whatever it took to meet Benavidez in the cage to determine the new champion.

“He couldn’t have been better,” UFC President Dana White said. “He couldn’t have been classier – as classy as classy can be.”

McCall, who had stormed out the Octagon after the decision was announced, tried to hide his elation under a mask of irony and nonchalance. But it was hard to hide the thrill on his face. He had battered Johnson in the third and final round, winning it 10-8 on one score card, dominating “Mighty Mouse” with vicious ground and pound. Now he would get the chance to settle the score.

“Shoot, we get to fight again,” McCall said at the post-fight press conference. “You guys had a good time right? We’ll put on another show.”

On Friday, 97 days after the first bout, the rematch will finally go down, the main event of a solid night of fights on FX.

“I was confident to begin with. I never doubted myself about the fight. But now I know that I am the better fighter,” McCall told Bleacher Report. “I’m stronger, physically stronger, more aggressive; things like that. I know I can finish him, I know I can beat him up.”

Considering it’s the sequel to one of the best fights of the year, the buzz in the MMA community has been minimal. Do yourself a favor and make a point of tuning in. While it seems like there is a fight card nearly every weekend, this is not one you want to miss.
