UFC Ottawa played host to a pivotal featherweight contest between Cub Swanson and Shane Burgos.

Swanson (25-10) has seen better days. The longtime veteran has dropped his last three fights heading into Saturday night. A win is of the utmost importance for the So-Cal native.

As for Burgos (11-1). After losing the only fight of his career, “The Hurricane” got back on track by defeating Kurt Holobaugh at UFC 230. A win over Swanson would likely propel Burgos into the top 15.

Round One

Burgos opens up with a jab, Swanson with a side kick. Swanson lands a right hook, left cross combo. Burgos plots forward and pops his jab again. Swanson drives home a leg kick. Burgos answers with one of his own. Swanson launches an attack with his hands, Burgos shells up and defends. Burgos rips a left hook to the body. Very technical thus far for Burgos. Swanson throws a head kick up and clips Burgos. Burgos goes body, head on the left side. Both fighters trade low kicks, Swanson doubles up his jab. One minute to go in the round. Burgos pops his jab again, his five plus inch reach advantage his coming in handy here. Swanson wings a right hook. The horn sounds.

Round Two

Both fighters open up with rapid-fire jabs. Burgos lands a leg kick. Swanson lands a right hand, then a left. He throws a sidekick to boot. Swanson fainting and moving in, he lands a nice one-two down the middle. Swanson lands an uppercut and then a body kick. Burgos eats it and walks through. He lands an uppercut. Swanson connects on a big right hook. Burgos lands a leg kick. Swanson fires back with a kick. The men trade jabs, Burgos sneaks an uppercut in behind his jab. Again, the fighters trade right hands. Swanson lands a right hand and a leg kick. Burgos steps aside and lands a right. He walks Swanson down but Swanson answers with a left hand that backs Burgos up. The horn sounds.

Round Three

Swanson opens up with a left hand, then a leg kick. Burgos has great head movement and lands a right hand. Swanson is in his face here. He fakes a takedown. Burgos backs up and lands a double jab. He cracks Swanson with a straight left hand. Swanson gets in on a takedown near the cage. He gets his hands locked around Burgos’ waist. He unloads a bevy of knees to Burgos’ thighs. He can’t get Burgos to the ground but those knees have to hurt. Burgos defends and breaks his grip. The fighters recenter and Burgos nearly lands a huge left hook. 90 seconds left in the fight. Burgos moves forward and cracks Swanson with a right, then another right. Swanson throws a left. Burgos walks Swanson down and pops a left hand. He goes to the head with a kick. Then the body. Swanson tries to get the fight to the ground Burgos lands a head kick as the fight ends.

UFC Ottawa played host to an exciting bantamweight scrap between former TUF winner Brad Katona and Merab Dvalishvili.

As always, LowkickMMA will have you covered with all the results from UFC on ESPN+ 9 from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada as they happen.

Katona (8-0) entered Saturday night having never tasted defeat. The 27-year-old Canadian entered the contest at a slight underdog at +155 (Bovada).

As for Dvalishvili (8-4). The Serra-Longo trained fighter is yet to be in a boring fight. He defeated Terrion Ware at UFC Moscow last September.

Round One

Katona quickly takes to the center of the Octagon and lands a leg kick. Dvalishvili pumps his jab and lands a leg kick. He fakes a flying knee then throws a spinning back fist. Nothing finds its mark but Katona lands a lunging left hand. Katona gets cracked with a big right hand but he eats it and walks forward. Dvalishvili circles right and winds a left hand, he snatches up Katona’s leg for a single leg but Katona wiggles free. Katona looks for a takedown of his own as he presses Dvalishvili against the cage. Dvalishvili reveres the position and puts Katona on his back. Less than one minute to go and Dvalishvili is in top control. He lands a few soft punches and a few hammer fists as the round comes to an end.

Round Two

Katona presses forward to start round two. Dvalishvili takes advantage and scores a takedown. He puts Katona on his back. Katona looks for a choke but there is nothing there. Dvalishvili passes into half guard and lands a few right hands to Katona’s face. He finds his way back to full guard. Dvalishvili lands a nice right hand as both fighters battle for position. Two minutes left but Dvalishvili is doing just enough to keep this fight on the ground. A punch here and there. Katona is just helpless as the referee stands the fighters up. Katona wades in with a left hand and clinches Dvalishili. He lands a knee and presses him against the cage. He tries to trip Dvalishvili but instead gets tripped. The round ends.

Round Three

Katona looks eager to start the final round. He throws a head kick that catches air. Dvalishvili lands a leg kick. Katona lunges in with a lead elbow, Dvalishvili evades and clinches Katona. He tries to throw Katona but he defends and lands a knee. Katona defends a trip and stomps Dvalishvili’s foot. Katona leads with a stiff jab but Dvalishvili times a takedown. He puts Katona on his back again. He lands some ground and pound and moves into Katona’s guard. He postures up and lands some nice offence. One minute to go and both guys are firing. Katona throws his legs up and looks for a Dvalishvili’s heel. The fight ends.

The heavyweights took center Octagon next at UFC Ottawa as “The Big Ticket” Walt Harris welcomed the “Polar Bear” Serghei Spivac to the promotion.

Harris (12-7) has shown moments of promise throughout his 11 fight UFC career. Followed by moments that leave you scratching your head (remember the Mark Godbeer fight). Harris will look to make it three in a row on Saturday.

Sanchez (10-4) looked to win his second straight on Saturday night. The 31-year-old American most recently defeated Markus Perez at UFC Lincoln last August.

As for Barriault (11-1). “The Power Bar” made his promotional debut in Ottawa. Typically a light heavyweight, Barriault will compete at 185-pounds in the UFC.

Round One

The fighters touch gloves to begin the round. Sanchez faints a takedown as Barriault moves forward. Sanchez gets in on and takes down the Canadian. He pins Barriault and lands a couple of right hands to his head. Sanchez postures up and traps his legs. He drops some elbows then is forced to control Barriault’s position. He lands a few more rights to the face but Barriault gets back to his feet using a wizzer. Sanchez lands a few knees inside the clinch but Barriault manages to get Sanchez off him with an elbow. Barriault pops his jab in Sanchez’ face. Sanchez wings an overhand left that misses the mark. Barriault defends a takedown and lands a right hand on Sanchez. 20 seconds left in the opening round. The fighters trade right hands as the horn sounds.

Round Two

Sanchez lands a leg kick to start round two. Barriault wades in with a looping left hand that misses Sanchez. Sanchez shoots a takedown but the Canadian defends and cracks Sanchez with a right hand for his effort. Sanchez goes low with a kick then goes high. Barriault lands an overhand right. He follows it up with a clean straight left. Sanchez buries a body kick but eats a right from Barriault. The American tries to clinch but Barriault shoves him off. He lands an uppercut and presses Sanchez against the cage. The fighters trade right hands. Sanchez reveres positions and puts Barriault on the cage. He lands an uppercut, Barriault lands an uppercut of his own. Crazy. Both men open up with a flurry. Sanchez backs off and the fighters circle away from the cage. Barriault lands a one-two, then an uppercut. Sanchez answers with a straight right. Barriault a right, then a left. He goes to the body as the round ends.

Round Three

Sanchez lands a lazy leg kick to open the round. Barriault has a pep in his step here in the final stanza. Another leg kick from Sanchez. Barriault circles right and lands a left. The American clinches and lands a knee down the middle. Barriault goes to the body with a left hook. Sanchez wades in with a one-two-one. He follows straight away with a takedown attempt but the Canadian defends as his back is on the cage. Sanchez works for the takedown and lands a sneaky trip on Barriault. Sanchez lands a few minimal punches as he works for a better position. Barriault gets back to his feet but he gives up his back in the process. He defends Sanchez’ takedown attempts but the American is relentless on a single leg. Good work from Barriault to defend but the clock is ticking here with 20 seconds in the fight. Barriault jumps for a choke as the fight ends.
