UFC middleweight contender Marvin Vettori has revealed that he asked for his upcoming fight with Robert Whittaker to be contested over five rounds.
The MMA leader is set to arrive on French soil for the first time in September, and it’s bringing with it some blockbuster names and matchups. While hometown heavyweight Ciryl Gane will be attracting much of the shine from his fellow Parisians come fight night as he takes on the always-entertaining Tai Tuivasa, the co-main event is set to be just as, if not more, exciting.
The co-main event slot will be a rare occasion for both men. While the Italian has featured in main events across his last four appearances, all of which went the five-round distance, the Australian has fought 25 minutes three times in his last four bouts, the outlier being a three-round victory over Jared Cannonier.
And although the pair are set to go for three rounds at UFC Paris, Vettori seemingly attempted to change that.
During a recent interview with MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn, “The Italian Dream” revealed his preference for five-round contests and noted that he’d asked to have his crucial clash with Whittaker extended.
“I was asking for five rounds. I was asking for five rounds even though it’s a co-main event,” Vettori said. “I didn’t hear anything back, but I wanted a five-rounder, just because I feel like in five-round (fights), the skill comes out more. There’s more time to study, there’s more time to get a feel of your opponent.
“With three rounds, it’s more like — in three rounds, you can get away with way more mistakes, and maybe like, still make it to the end. So, it is what it is. (I’m a) great fighter no matter the circumstances, no matter the ruleset,” Vettori added. “You need to be able to adjust. So, I’ll be adjusting and coming out victorious.”
Vettori Sees Himself As The UFC Paris Main Event
Vettori’s attempts to secure another 25-minute showcase is perhaps unsurprising given how he’s viewing his matchup with former champ Whittaker, who is widely regarded as the clear second-best in the division.
Given Italy’s close proximity to France, as well as the fact that Vettori will be making his first appearance in Europe under the UFC banner, it’s understandable that the #3-ranked contender will enjoy sizable support come September 3.
With that in mind, the 28-year-old admitted that he’s entering the contest with a main-event mindset.
“It’s my first time (fighting on a European UFC card),” Vettori said. “Just myself, people almost bought a thousand tickets, people that I know that bought tickets, so just my people, people that I’m bringing, is probably about a thousand people. And then all the other supporters from all over the world, they text me every day.
“I really feel like I am the main event. I wanted to be the main event,” Vettori continued. “I think I am the main event. But, you know, Tuivasa and Ciryl Gane is a great fight, too.”
Who do you think will have their hand raised at UFC Paris, Marvin Vettori or Robert Whittaker?

Ciryl Gane is scheduled to take on Tai Tuivasa in UFC’s first outing in Paris.
Former UFC interim Heavyweight title holder Ciryl Gane will face off against the rising prospect Tai Tuivasa in the headlining match of UFC Fight Night Paris on September 3. Gane is reeling off the first professional loss of his career in his latest unification bout with the reigning division champ Francis Ngannou.
Meanwhile, Tuivasa will be going into the cage after racking up a five-fight win streak. He dispatched all five of his previous opponents by a knockout or a technical knockout with a notable win against Derrick Lewis in February. The third-ranked contender in the division gets a significant level up in competition and is likely to get an inch closer to the gold if he comes out on top over the top contender.
Ciryl Gane vs. Tai Tuivasa officially announced
UFC officially announced the matchup on Twitter this Wednesday.
Gane gets to fight in his hometown for the first time
For the first time ever since the legalization of MMA in France in Jan 2020, Ciryl Gane will get to compete in front of his hometown this September. Gane is widely considered to be one of the most athletic fighters, especially at heavyweight where the athletes don’t necessarily have a fast movement.
Prior to his loss to “The Predator”, Gane was on a seven-fight win streak in the UFC that saw him defeat Derrick Lewis, Alexander Volkov, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, and Junior dos Santos.
Gane opened as the favorite against Ngannou in their title unification bout but was unsuccessful in securing the title. His outing with Tuivasa is being looked at as a title eliminator matchup where the winner will either likely get a shot at the strap or go through a top contender bout.

Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is looking to get another run at the reigning king Israel Adesanya.
Originally scheduled to face Marvin Vettori at UFC 275 in Singapore two weeks out, Robert Whittaker was forced to withdraw from the bout due to an injury picked up in training. Vettori was far from pleased upon hearing of the news and wasted no time in making his feelings clear as he called out the ‘Smash Brothers’.
Robert Whittaker vs. Marvin Vettori rescheduled for UFC Paris
After reports suggesting the bout had been rescheduled spread around, the UFC made the official announcement to pit ‘The Reaper’ against ‘The Italian Dream’ at UFC Fight Night Paris on September 3.
In an interview with Fox Sports Australia, Robert Whittaker talked about his upcoming fight with Marvin Vettori for the promotion’s debut show in France.
“Just recently it’s finally got to a point where I’m no longer feeling pain in sessions, and that just doubles down on the confirmation that I made the right choice pushing the fight back,” Whittaker said. “I am also lucky that I was able to push the fight back, the same fight, because I’m only just getting into the full swing of training now and the (originally planned) fight is in two weeks.
“He (Vettori) was just having a whinge, but if there’s anybody who understands loving a good whinge, it’s me,” he laughed.
Whittaker sees his bout with Vettori as a top contender fight
Being the number one ranked contender at 185 lbs, ‘Bobby Knuckles’ was disappointed when the initial outing was postponed. He believed that Vettori and himself did not have much of a direction other than colliding. In what can be viewed as an eliminator match, the winner of the pair’s clash will likely challenge for the belt against the one who comes out on top at UFC 276.
Having already faced and lost to the champion twice, getting another crack at the title might seem unrealistic for Whittaker although he feels like he can get another shot at Israel Adesanya based on Alexander Volkanovski’s third outing with Max Holloway, a contender ‘The Great’ has dispatched twice as well.
“I definitely think a trilogy is possible primarily because of the Holloway-Volkanovski trilogy fight going ahead,” Whittaker said. “Especially considering how close my fight was with Izzy last time, I definitely think that is a very real possibility.”
