Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum could find himself mixed up in another title fight in the near future. Scheduled to face Cain Velasquez at UFC 207 next month, ‘Vai Cavalo’ will look to make it 2-0 against the fellow ex-champ. Holding wins over some of the greatest heavyweight talent of all-time, Werdum began receiving very high accolades this past two years. His shocking victory over Fedor Emelianenko remains one of the Brazilian’s greatest achievements.

Since rejoining the UFC in 2012, Werdum has gone 7-1, his only loss came against Stipe Miocic at UFC 204 when he relinquished the title. Two victories over Travis Browne, submissions against Minotauro Nogueira and Cain Velasquez, and a TKO against Mark Hunt had fans crediting ‘Vai Cavalo’ as the greatest 265-pounder ever. Although the Pride FC, Strikeforce, UFC and Jiu Jitsu legend has seen great success in recent years, he sounds unsure about his UFC future.

Fabricio Werdum Is Unhappy

Following his recent controversy over comments about Reebok, Fabricio Werdum was removed from his duties as Spanish broadcast commentator. In a recent interview with Combate, as quoted by Bloody Elbow, ‘Vai Cavalo’ says he is considering not renewing his UFC contract when it expires:

“Once my contract is up, I don’t know if I’ll renew it,” Werdum said. “Many things can happen but I’ll say this. I’m 100% a company man, be it a sponsor or an organization, I am the kind of guy people can always count on. However, when it’s not reciprocal, there’s no way I can be the company man. When I’m happy, I do everything for things to turn out the best way they can, but when I’m unhappy, and I’m not happy at all with the UFC, at the moment, it’s hard to be like that.

Bye Cavalo?

“I’m kind of bummed out, after all this time fighting, I consider myself a veteran, I’m 39 after all. Started out a little late, in my 20’s, but I still feel like a veteran. I intend to fight for two or three more years, we always say that, but we can never really stop. I can’t confirm anything about the contract. Maybe I’ll get a better proposal from another company once my contract is up, I don’t know, I haven’t gotten any for now. Who knows, maybe in the future, if I start being happy again in the organization I work for, maybe I’ll stay or maybe I’ll leave, or maybe I’ll just stop. So there’s a lot that could happen.”

Not an uncommon theme in the UFC right now, Fabricio Werdum feels he is not being treated properly. With a fighters union forming rapidly, will these issues become something the UFC is finally forced to face?

Former UFC interim welterweight champion and UFC on FOX 21 main event star Carlos Condit has been quite vocal lately. ‘The Natural Born Killer’ talked about a possible retirement in the near future, made an incredibly accurate prediction of the UFC 201 main event and also gave a promise of blood and violence against Demian Maia on August 27. After sitting quietly on the sidelines since his narrow loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, it’s refreshing to see Condit in the limelight again.

But it’s not all roses and walks on the beach in the life of a fighter. The reality is that no matter how much you enjoy to fight, the amount of responsibility and inherent dangers that come with the sport are staggering. Even for a guy like ‘NBK,’ who openly admits his passion for the fight, issues like the Reebok deal are hard to swallow.

Carlos-Condit[1]
Carlos Condit might love to fight, but he needs to live too…

The UFC’s partnership with sports apparel giants Reebok has been highly debated for so many reasons. Firstly, it seemed Reebok was unable to manufacture UFC gear without making ridiculous, racist, offensive and just obvious mistakes regarding fighter names, nationalities, styles and other easy-to-find details. This could probably have been looked on in a slightly different light had the athletes been receiving fair compensation from the deal, which they are not.

Condit joins the ranks of many other fighters right now who have growing concerns about their own sacrifice in regards to what they are paid in return, specifically from the Reebok deal.

As quoted by MMAMania.com:

“I wish that a dude like Cyborg, or any of these fighters who are putting their bodies through this and putting their health and well-being on the line, I just wish we had a little bit more security. This is his trade, he’s a fighter and this is how he makes money. Now he can’t make any money. Now what the hell is he going to do? That’s kind of how it is with all of us, so, that is the nature of the sport. Any of us can get hurt, get our faces broken. We accept that risk, but, we kind of don’t have anything to fall back on. And I was like, ‘damn, he may never fight again.’”

~Condit agrees with Mark Hunt’s fighter union~

“Something needs to be done. A big part of the Reebok deal, man, our loss in sponsors took away our security. Now we are beholden to living fight to fight and we don’t have that buffer in between in regards to financial security that sponsors gave us. So, we are in a weird place, man.”

Very few fighters have received a promotional push and the backing of the UFC like 20-year-old phenom “Super” Sage Northcutt has. After quickly compiling two straight stoppage victories in the Octagon, it appeared as if Texas native was on a fast track to stardom, although a recent loss threatened that a bit.

Jumping up in weight to take on late replacement Bryan Barberena last January, Northcutt was forced to tap to a submission, surrendering his very first loss inside of the Octagon. “Super” Sage cited a sickness for his poor performance in the aftermath of the bout, but it doesn’t appear as if his promotional backing has diminished too much.

Northcutt will next take on Enrique Marin at July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card, likely the biggest card in promotional history, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Putting the young up and comer on the biggest card of the year clearly shows that the UFC still sees something special in “Super” Sage.

Aside from the UFC, sports apparel giant Reebok, who serves as the official outfitter of the UFC, also sees something unique in Northcutt despite his recent setback. The 20-year-old took to his official Twitter account earlier today (June 29, 2016) to announce that he had signed a solo sponsorship deal with the company:

Despite the fact that every UFC fighter sports Reebok when he or she walks to the Octagon, only a select few have been able to ink separate sponsorship deals with the company. With this signing, Northcutt joins the likes of Conor McGregor, Ronda Rousey, Anthony Pettis, Johny Hendricks, and Joanna Jedrzeczyk among others.

Do you see Northcutt bouncing back on July 9th?

Former long-time UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre constantly makes headlines regarding a potential return to action after vacating his coveted 170-pound strap back in 2013.

Every time it appears as if a possible comeback may be a reality, however, St-Pierre shuts it down, or leaves us with yet another question mark.

That may have just changed, as we have received the most definitive news regarding “Rush’s” anticipated return to action.

According to Benoit Beaudoin of a French sports outlet, the Canadian superstar has begun negotiations with the UFC, although one road block remains (translated from French):

“Georges St-Pierre confirms negotiations with the UFC for his return. The sponsors are a stumbling point.”

Since GSP’s departure from the Octagon, the UFC has signed a highly lucrative deal with Reebok; a deal that has enlisted the sports apparel giant as the sole sponsor of the UFC. Fighters are now unable to represent outside sponsors at promotional events, nor are they able to do so inside the cage on fight night.

While this deal was intended to turn mixed martial arts into a more ‘professional’ sport, it has ultimately took quite a nice chuck of change away from some competitors.

With that being said, St-Pierre, who is a veteran of 21 UFC bouts, would receive a $20,000 sponsorship payment from Reebok, likely a significant amount less than he was making back in his glory days.

As of now, no word has come from the promotion regarding this news, although St-Pierre fighting once again would undoubtedly be monumental.

The all-time great hasn’t competed since a highly controversial split-decision victory over Johny Hendricks back at UFC 167, but he remains at just 34 years of age.

There’s A Good Chance Donald Cerrone Will Violate Reebok Policy Again

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will return to action this Sunday (February 21, 2015), taking on a fellow “Cowboy” in Alex Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 83 from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Cerrone is coming off of a devastating 66-second loss to lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at this past December’s UFC on FOX 17, but that wasn’t the only thing that went wrong for “Cowboy”. He was also fined by Reebok for violating the official outfitting policy.

Apparently Cerrone had a patch on his Reebok shorts that wasn’t allowed, but he admits that he expected to face consequences:

“I was fully aware I would be fined before the last fight,” he continued.

“I knew the circumstances going in, I just didn’t know how much I was getting fined. Dana and I talked and came to some grounds that we’re going to stick to.” Cerrone told ESPN.

Although the fine ended up being more than he had expected, Cerrone may indeed continue to play by his own rules this weekend:

“There’s a pretty good chance I will [wear the offending patch on Sunday], yeah,” he said.

“Cowboy” may be playing with fire here, however, as he has even went on record to say in the past that his manager was warned about his actions. In fact, another violation could result in the fighter essentially being cut from the UFC, something that would hinder his hectic fighting schedule.

While he missed out on a championship belt in his last fight, Cerrone seems to be strictly focused on fighting as often as possible, and he will be moving up in weight this weekend to do so.

At the end of the day, however, the weight doesn’t seem to affect him:

“[Fighting at welterweight] makes camp a little better,” he explained.

“I don’t have to pick and choose what I eat. I don’t care though, I’ll fight at 155. Either one. I’ll go to 185 pounds, who cares? Just give me fights.”

Do you think “Cowboy” will follow through with his plan, or does he have too much to lose here?

Matt Mitrione Forced To Go Without Shoes Due To Reebok Restraints

Because, hey, it’s better to look like a homeless guy than wear Nike, right?

Along with pretty much everybody else in the MMA world right now, UFC heavyweight and Fight Night Boston main card face Matt Mitrione is none too impressed with the Reebok deal. He was among a number of 265-pounders that originally spoke out about losing large sums of sponsorship money due to the partnership the fighters had absolutely no say in, and this was before the UFC started enforcing penalties in line with the Reebok contract.

Recently we heard about Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone both eating $10,000 fines for uniform policy breaches during their UFC Orlando lightweight title clash. Nate Diaz was also fined, and he claims the item of clothing they docked him for were actually Reebok jeans.

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Mitrione vs GonzagaSo back to ‘Meathead,’ he faces fellow hard hitting heavyweight Travis Browne at this Sunday’s (January 16, 2016) UFC Fight Night 81 event. Showing up for his press obligations, and ironically to detail why he hasn’t attempted to get a new contract with the UFC, the ex football player can be seen without shoes as he wasn’t wearing the mandatory Reebok kicks.

Wonders will never cease.

So Mitrione will be testing the waters of free agency after his contract is played out, and who can blame him? It took him so long to finally get a fight in the UFC octagon, whereas more clearly marketable fighter like Sage Northcutt are getting three fights in six months.

When you consider the uniform policy in this case, it’s getting to a point beyond stupid now. Forcing an athlete to do a press conference without any shoes on? Yeah, that’s much more professional looking than just letting the guy wear his own footwear. I’m sure their would have been outrage from onlookers if ‘Meathead’ didn’t fit in with the rest of the power rangers.
