Jon Jones made his long-awaited return to the Octagon on Saturday night for a heavyweight championship showdown with No. 1 ranked contender, Ciryl Gane.
‘Bones’ made his first walk to the cage in more than three years. Packing on another 40 pounds, Jones looked to conquer the UFC’s heavyweight division after ruling over the 205-pound weight class for more than a decade. Standing in his way was heavy-hitting Frenchman Ciryl Gane who was intent on spoiling Jones’ homecoming in front of a packed crowd at T-Mobile Arena for UFC 285.
Jones came out immediately putting pressure on Gane. It took ‘Bones’ just over a minute to work Gane to the canvas. Gane quickly worked his back to the fence in an attempt to wall walk. Leaving his head open, Jones quickly snatched a guillotine from a mounted position and cranked on it leaving Gane no choice, but to tap out just over the two-minute mark of the opening round.
Official Result: Jon Jones def. Ciryl Gane via submission (guillotine choke) at 2:04 of Round 1

Alexa Grasso submits Valentina Shevchenko to become UFC flyweight champion at UFC 285
The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, March 4, 2023, for UFC 285, headlined by back-to-back title fights.
The main event of the evening came between the returning greatest of all-time, former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and his opponent, former interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane.
Our co-main event of the evening came at 125 lbs showcasing UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, who aimed to make the eighth-straight defense of her title opposing no. 6 ranked Alexa Grasso.
Shevchenko had gone 9-0 in the UFC’s flyweight division coming in since dropping down from 135 lbs, while Grasso had gone 4-0 in the UFC’s flyweight division since moving up from 115 lbs.
Round one
Shevchenko looks sharp in the early goings of the first, varying her attack well.
Grasso catches her with a good combination midway through the round however, and lands the same combination much harder not long thereafter. She also takes the champion down in the final ten seconds of the opening round, though Shevchenko was right back to her feet.
Round two
Shevchenko secures an early takedown to begin the second, and eventually passes to side control where she dominates the first three minutes of the round. Grasso gets back to her feet and lands another heavy combination, before she’s taken down once again, ending the second on her back.
Round three
Grasso is looking good on the feet, as she’s continuing to land punches in the middle of her combinations.
Shevchenko lands a quick combination before immediately shooting in on, and securing a takedown early on in the middle stretch.
Grasso gets back to her feet a couple minutes later, only to get taken down again. Shevchenko takes her back and one point, though the round ends with Grasso holding onto a guillotine choke from guard.
Round four
Much of the fourth round is spent with both women on their feet, and it was pretty even through the initial four minutes.
However, Shevchenko throws a spinning back kick and Grasso capitalizes on it, immediately taking her back and sinking in the rear naked choke. The most dominant champion in women’s flyweight history defended it as long as she could, but was eventually forced to tap.
Alexa Grasso becomes just the second UFC women’s flyweight champion in promotional history with her submission finish over the woman many believe to be the greatest female fighter of all time. She also became just the second Mexican-born champion in UFC history tonight at UFC 285.

Kazakh standout Shavkat Rakhmonov returned to the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 285. Emanating from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Rakhmonov looked to keep his undefeated streak and 100% finish rate intact against his toughest test to date. Meeting him inside the cage was No. 7 ranked welterweight, Geoff Neal. ‘Handz of Steel’ walked into the bout with back-to-back wins against Santiago Ponzinibbio and Vicente Luque.
Shavkat Rakhmonov quickly got things started with a head kick before clinching with Neal against the fence. Separating, the pair engaged in an entertaining back-and-forth battle on the feet. 90 seconds to go in the opening round, Rakhmonov landed a nasty head kick that caused a cut near Neal’s left eye. Of course, that didn’t stop Neal from continuing to attack, holding his own against Rakhmonov in the opening round.
In the second round, Rakhmonov started to take over as repeated blows to the body began to slow down Neal. Still, Neal was more than willing to engage, keeping Rakhmonov on his toes. Neal picked up the pace in the third, likely knowing he needed a finish to walk out with a win. Neal landed a massive right hand early in the third that stumbled Rakhmonov. Neal’s corner could be heard desperately encouraging Neal to fight with urgency, but his gas tank was quickly depleting. Rakhmanov capitalized on the opportunity and landed a brutal right hand that rocked Neal. Moving in, Rakhmonov targeted the body with a knee that took the wind out of Neal.
With Neal running for cover, Rakhmonov pursued and clinched against the fence. While there, Rakhmonov was able to cinch his arm under Neal’s chin and cranked on it, putting Neal to sleep with just seconds remaining in the third round.
Official Result: Shavkat Rakhmonov def. Geoff Neal via submission (standing rear-naked choke) at 4:17 of Round 3

Our second bout on the main card tonight came at 155 lbs between a pair of contenders in no. 7 ranked former KSW champ-champ Mateusz Gamrot and the surging no. 10 ranked Jalin Turner.
Gamrot lost his most recent fight to current no. 4 ranked Beneil Dariush, a fight he went into on a three-fight finish streak, while Turner came into tonight’s bout on a five-fight finish streak of his own.
Round one
Gamrot secures a takedown about two minutes into the opening round, though Turner works back to his feet shortly thereafter. He’s still being pressed into the fence, but breaks the clinch with a nicely timed knee to the body followed by a two-punch combination.
Round two
Gamrot lands a nice right hand to the body to begin the second, and he’s beginning to pick Turner apart with his leg kicks.
Turner then lands a stunning right hand that hurts Gamrot, and follows it up with some more crisp punches for the next minute, as well as some nasty body kicks.
Gamrot catches one of those body kicks however and takes Turner back down, ending the final 90 seconds of the second in top position.
Round three
Gamrot’s wrestling-heavy attack continues to work for him into the final stretch, as he takes Turner down at the beginning, and end of the round once again. Turner was able to land some effective strikes in the middle there, but he wasn’t able to keep Gamrot off him and it cost him the win.

Three-time NCAA Division I national champion Bo Nickal made his highly anticipated UFC debut on Saturday. Opening the UFC 285 main card, Nickal squared off with Jamie Pickett inside T-Mobile Arena. After scoring three straight victories, including back-to-back wins on Dana White’s Contender Series, Nickal stepped into the Octagon as one of the biggest favorites in UFC history. Listed as a -1500 favorite throughout the week, the odds began to widen further as fight night approached with some sportsbooks listing Nickal at -2000.
Bo Nickal came out guns blazing in the opening seconds of his bout on Saturday night and delivered the performance that fans were expecting. It only took 60 seconds for Nickal to get Pickett on the canvas. Initially fishing for a rear-naked choke, Pickett was able to turn his body but gave Nickal an opening to lock in a triangle choke. To Pickett’s credit, he fought for as long as he possibly could, but the squeeze of Nickal was simply too much to overcome.
Official Result: Bo Nickal def. Jamie Pickett via submission (arm triangle choke) at 2:54 of Round 1

Cody Garbrandt def. Trevin Jones via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, March 4, 2023, for UFC 285, headlined by back-to-back title fights showcasing former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane, and then UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, who faced no. 6 ranked Alexa Grasso in attempt to make the eighth successful defense of her title in the co-main event of the evening.
Headlining the preliminary card was former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt, who was initially slated to face Julio Arce at this event. However, Arce was recently forced from the bout with a knee injury and replaced by Trevin Jones.
Since winning the bantamweight title, Garbrandt had gone 1-5 over his latest six appearances, bringing his record from 11-0 to 12-5, while Jones opened up his respective UFC tenure with back-to-back knockout victories over Timur Valiev and Mario Bautista before dropping his last three-straight fights.
Round one
Cody Garbrandt opens up the bout with a pair of nasty body kicks, and he continues to land them throughout the first round. He also lands a nice overhand right and a good right cross to the body. His activity isn’t high, but he isn’t missing much and he’s out-striking Jones.
Round two
Garbrandt opens up the second with a beautifully timed takedown as he slams Jones straight into side control, though Jones is back to his feet not long thereafter. Garbrandt times another perfect takedown shot midway through the second and remains in Jones’ guard for a good 80 seconds before briefly taking his back.
This was a well rounded Cody Garbrandt we saw tonight at UFC 285, Trevin Jones landed just eight strikes through the first 10 minutes.
Round three
Garbrandt coasts the entire third round, but gets caught with a hard two-punch combination from Jones that hurts him pretty badly with about 90 seconds left in the fight. Garbrandt ties up with him, but gets caught with another right before he’s taken down. Jones remains on top of Garbrandt for the final minute of the fight.
It wasn’t the most eventful affair, there were just 21 significant strikes landed by Cody Garbrandt to Trevin Jones’ 10 with two minutes left on the clock, but the former bantamweight champion gets back to his winning ways with a universal 29-28 unanimous decision victory tonight at UFC 285.
