Sean Brady continued his climb up the welterweight rankings with a dominant performance against Gilbert Burns in the UFC Vegas 97 headliner on Saturday night.

Brady quickly established himself as the faster fighter on his feet, out-landing Burns with a variety of combinations and mixing in his grappling to keep the one-time title challenger under 10 significant strikes throughout the opening round. However, Burns got things off to a hot start in the second, landing a nasty knee up the middle that wobbled Brady. That prompted Brady to clinch up and take a few moments against the fence to shake off the cobwebs.

Burns’ offense saw a significant uptick in the second with him becoming just the second fighter to ever take Brady down to the mat inside the Octagon, though he wasn’t able to accomplish much with the takedown and likely ended the second stanza down 2-0.

Brady continued to dominate things on the feet despite Burns’ best efforts to bring pressure and put the rising contender on his backfoot. Brady ended the third round with a big right hand followed by a successful takedown, picking up Burns and sending him crashing back down to the canvas.

In the opening 30 seconds of the fourth, we saw dueling low blows as both Brady and Burns hit their opponent below the belt by accident. Fortunately, both fighters were able to recover quickly, getting us right back to the action.

Brady largely dominated the last two rounds minus the final minute of the fourth with Burns managed to score some control time, but not much else. Burns was fishing for the Hail Mary shot in the fifth, but Brady nullified that by taking him down with two minutes to go and riding out an all-but-guaranteed win on the scorecards.

Caio Borralho extended his unbeaten streak to 16 with a spectacular five-round performance against one-time title challenger Jared Cannonier in the UFC Vegas 96 headliner.

Borralho and Cannonier unleashed their heaviest attacks throughout the 25-minute affair. In the early going, Borralho found success with his jab and attacking the lead leg of his opponent. Cannonier came roaring back in round two and managed to land some big power punches against the fence. However, the momentum switched back in the third round after Borralho landed a straight right hand that had Cannonier on the ropes.

Cannonier made it out of the round and managed to bounce back in the fourth leading the commentary team to believe that the fight was even going into the fifth and final round.

Borralho was the busier fighter in the fifth, but he ran away with both the round and the fight after landing a perfectly timed one-two combination that sent Cannonier crashing to the canvas. Borralho jumped on his opponent and attempted to end things inside the distance with some ground and pound, but Cannonier stayed busy enough to keep referee Dan Miragliotta from stepping in.

Borralho attempted to cinch in an arm triangle choke, but the fence prevented him from getting the proper positioning. Abandoning the hold, Borralho was content to ride out the rest of the round confident that he had both the round and the fight won.

Tabatha Ricci defeats Angela Hill in energetic co-main event - UFC Vegas 96 Highlights

Tabatha Ricci secured her spot in the strawweight top 10 with an impressive performance against Angela Hill in the UFC Vegas 96 co-main event on Saturday night.

Ricci came out aggressive from the opening bell, pushing the pace and looking to land on ‘Overkill’ early. Hill struggled to get anything going in the opening round as Ricci kept her on her back foot.

Tabitha Ricci vs. Angela Hill

15 seconds into the second round, Ricci secured a quick takedown and dropped a couple of hammer fists before getting into Hill’s guard. Second-guessing her decision, Ricci retreated and forced Hill back to her feet. Things were fairly even on the feet with Hill outstriking Ricci by a slim margin.

Perhaps sensing how close things were in the second, Ricci scored a late-round takedown. However, Hill was able to pop back up and pepper ‘Baby Shark’ with a few solid strikes just before the horn.

Tabitha Ricci vs. Angela Hill

Ricci once again went for an early takedown, but Hill was able to sprawl and turn it into a takedown attempt of her own. Ricci responded by kicking Hill straight off her and getting back to her feet. Potentially down two rounds, Hill began to turn up the heat, but Ricci’s work in the clinch did a good job of stifling her offense at times.

After trading blows up until the final bell, we went to the judge’s scorecards to determine our winner.
