UFC Sacramento goes down tomorrow night (Sat. July 13, 2019) from the Golden 1 Center in California.

In the main event of the night, bantamweights Aspen Ladd and Germaine De Randamie will go head-to-head. The up-and-coming Ladd will get to test herself against a former UFC champion in de Randamie, who is one of the best female strikers under the promotion’s banner today.

Also, former multi-time UFC bantamweight title challenger Urijah Faber makes his return to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition after coming out of retirement. He takes on the young and impressive Ricky Simon. The Las Vegas-based promotion has compiled a great card for its return to Sacramento.

Check out LowKickMMA’s UFC Sacramento staff predictions here below.

UFC Sacramento Staff Predictions:

Abhinav Kini:

De Randamie vs. Ladd:

Aspen Ladd has been very impressive since making her UFC debut with three straight wins. A win over Germaine de Randamie would be a huge statement and the biggest win of her career. However, I feel de Randamie is just a level higher right now and should get the win to potentially set up a rematch with Amanda Nunes. (Prediction: De Randamie)

Faber vs. Simon:

I’m actually fine with Urijah Faber coming out of retirement. Even though he lost two of his last three, I didn’t think he was necessarily past it. That said, Ricky Simon has looked really good of late and Faber’s last fight was nearly three years ago. I think Simon will get the biggest win of his career. (Prediction: Simon)

Andrew Ravens:

De Randamie vs. Ladd:

An interesting fight that really could go either way. Ladd has so much potential in her MMA career while GDR has proven what she can do inside of the Octagon. This comes down to age in the end as I think Ladd’s speed will be too much for GDR. Ladd closing in on range will be the key to victory for her whether that’s tagging the veteran with strikes or takedowns. Ladd gets it done by unanimous decision. (Prediction: Aspen Ladd)

Faber vs. Simon:

As much as this would be a great story to have Faber return to the sport after years away and be victorious in his hometown, I don’t see it. The UFC didn’t give Faber an easy task but rather tossed him to a worthy challenger who is extremely dangerous. I see Faber keeping it close but Simon gets it done by unanimous decision. (Prediction: Ricky Simon)

Brady Briggs:

De Randamie vs. Ladd:

This fight is a little harder to pick, considering de Randamie doesn’t fight too often; however, she’s much bigger than Ladd, and has a much more extensive background in kickboxing. This is an MMA fight of course, but with her size, and her wrestling defense has improved drastically since we’ve first seen her, I think she takes a decision over the younger Ladd. (Prediction: Germaine de Randamie)

Faber vs. Simon:

I for one believe the youth will play a big factor and Simon will win via decision. I could certainly see Faber winning, but Simon has been active recently. He has won a lot recently, and he’s not going to let this opportunity to beat a legend pass him by. (Prediction: Ricky Simon)

Cole Shelton:

De Randamie vs. Ladd:

This is a really intriguing bout and a fight that could go many ways. Either Aspen Ladd will use her wrestling to take down de Randamie, or the former featherweight champ will use her kickboxing to keep the prospect at range and piece her up. However, I think Ladd is the real deal and will win this fight by stoppage in the fourth or fifth round. It will be a close fight, but one in which Ladd will get her hand raised. (Prediction: Aspen Ladd)

Faber vs. Simon:

Ricky Simon is not the person Urijah Faber should have returned against. In my eyes, he is one of the top prospects at bantamweight, and at 26, will be able to keep up the pressure and have a hard pace against the Hall of Famer. How Faber looks in this fight will be telling on if he should have returned. But, I think Simon dominates this fight as he keeps it standing and either wins by unanimous decision or by TKO in the third round. (Prediction: Ricky Simon)

Tonight at UFC Vegas 40, Aspen Ladd makes her featherweight debut in the main event against Norma Dumont. Her move up in weight class was unexpected but brought about by issues on the scale that forced a cancelation of her UFC Vegas 38 bout against Macy Chiasson. This was not the first time Ladd experienced serious issues on weigh-in day. Here’s a look back to a story published two years ago that documents another incident.

[ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED JULY 12, 2019, 4:12 PM]

Earlier today, Aspen Ladd made championship weight for her main event bout with Germaine de Randamie at tomorrow’s (Sat., Jul 13, 2019) UFC Sacramento.

However, things were not all good. Ladd was clearly shaking as she required the hoop to hit her mark. She also struggled to complete her pose for the cameras after she weighed in. All in all, it was an extremely concerning scene for a fighter who has had trouble making the bantamweight limit in the past. Her 2018 bout with Leslie Smith was called off when she missed weight.

Much of the MMA world was up in arms about whether or not she would be allowed to fight and for good reason. Her health genuinely appeared to be in danger. However, California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) physician Dr. Gary Furness told ESPN’s Marc Raimondi that Ladd was fine to compete:

“She did slightly overshoot her weight cut, but she was not dangerously dehydrated. She had moist mucus (sic) membranes, her vital signs were stable, and within a few minutes she was starting to orally hydrate and was back to normal. So she is cleared to fight.”

Shivering Was ‘Only Nerves?’

Raimondi then went on to detail that Ladd would be checked prior to competing according to Furness. He claimed Ladd’s shaking on the scale was due to ‘a little bit of nerves’:

“Furness said Ladd will be checked 90 minutes before the fight, but he does not anticipate issues. Re: her shivering, he said: “A little bit of nerves. She’s part of the main event and I believe she had missed weight in a previous fight. That was contributing to it, I believe.”

Perhaps Ladd was nervous about making the weight for her first UFC main event. But the state of her health based on the scene at weigh-ins appeared to have more to do with just nerves. Here’s to hoping the CSAC does their due diligence so that Ladd truly is in the right shape to fight tomorrow night.

Is California taking Ladd’s situation seriously enough?

Tomorrow night (Sat. July 13, 2019) we have a great night of fights, as the UFC returns to Sacramento, California for UFC Fight Night 155. “The California Kid” Urijah Faber returns to face No. 15-ranked Ricky Simon, and Germaine de Randamie faces up-and-coming contender Aspen Ladd in the five-round main event.

Continue reading for an in-depth breakdown of these stellar match-ups.

Co-Main Event: Urijah Faber vs. Ricky Simon

Many people are writing Urijah Faber off in his return to the octagon, thinking it won’t play out too well for him. He’s 40-years-old, as opposed to the 26-year-old Ricky Simon. What Faber has accomplished in his career is nothing short of incredible. He won the KOTC bantamweight championship and defended it five times, before winning the WEC featherweight championship, and also defended that belt five times.

During his reign, he emerged as one of the best fighters in the world. Since losing his WEC belt, however, he was never able to regain it. Though he wasn’t champion anymore, Faber continued to improve until about mid-2014, and then his performance started to fall off a little. However, he still has an elite skill-set.

“The California Kid” holds a BJJ brown belt – and has been submitting black belts since he was a purple belt – along with an NCAA Division I wrestling background. His stand up is pretty good too, using his own style of Muay Thai.

Ricky Simon has gone 3-0 thus far inside the UFC cage after winning and defending his LFA bantamweight championship before joining the UFC. Simon won his first seven fights with four finishes before being handed his first, and to this day, his only defeat; a fight in which he challenged for the Titan FC bantamweight championship.

He has since gone on an eight-fight win streak with another four finishes. Simon’s only loss came via rear-naked choke, which just so happens to be Faber’s favorite submission. The former WEC champion has only ever used two submissions in his entire MMA career, the guillotine, and the rear naked choke.

The Team Alpha Male founder does have one win via bulldog choke, but that’s essentially a rear-naked choke without having to take the back. Simon’s a well-rounded fighter too, as he’s been very impressive inside the UFC thus far. It’ll be interesting to see how this fight plays out.

Main Event: Germaine de Randami vs. Aspen Ladd

In the main event, we have two top women’s bantamweights, and former professional kickboxers, going at it. Former UFC women’s featherweight champion, and former WIKBA, IMTF, and WPKL women’s kickboxing champion, Germaine de Randamie. “GDR” holds the record in women’s kickboxing for the most consecutive wins at 37.

She’ll be going against the 8-0 professional kickboxer and mixed martial artist, Aspen Ladd, who’s a three-time amateur MMA champion. These two match up quite well together. De Randamie has a 71′ reach, as opposed to Ladd’s 66′, and is also three inches taller than the California native. However, though Ladd is smaller, and has much less experience in the striking department, she’s more well rounded than de Randamie.

“The Iron Lady” is merely an elite kickboxer with good takedown defense. Ladd, however, can do it all. The No. 4-ranked ranked bantamweight has a BJJ purple belt, she can wrestle very well (as we saw in her last fight) and is a very good striker herself. Remember, Frankie Edgar was smaller than everyone he fought, and was able to beat most of his opponents because of how well-rounded he was.

Ladd may be able to do the same. If the size isn’t a factor, however, the fact that de Randamie has gone five rounds before and Ladd hasn’t might be. De Randamie is also eleven years older than Ladd at 35-years-old. Will that play into her favor of having more experience, or will the younger Ladd be able to use her youth to her advantage? We’ll find out this Saturday!
