UFC middleweight Gerald Meerschaert returns to the Octagon on Saturday night when the promotion heads to Pechanga Arena in San Diego for UFC Fight Night: Vera vs. Cruz. In the main event of the evening, former two-time bantamweight world champion Dominick Cruz returns to face No. 5 ranked contender Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.

Opening the evening’s main card will be ‘GM3’ as he meets Bruno Silva. With both fighters having their winning streaks halted in their last outings, Meerschaert and Silva will look to get back into the win column and potentially break into the division’s top 15 rankings.

In an exclusive interview with LowKick MMA, Gerald Meerschaert discussed his brilliant run in 2021 where he rattled off three straight victories. During the conversation, talk turned to American fans and the belief that those fans don’t typically support American-born fighters the same way they appear to support those hailing from a foreign country.

“I think there’s probably a lot of things. I think one thing would be definitely oversaturation of the market so to speak. Even in the UFC, it’s an American-based company so most are from here, and you know, America is still a pretty big center worldwide for culture and exporting culture and stuff like that. Nobody wants to root [for] the big kid on the block. So it’s like if you come from the U.S. we have a lot of opportunities and things that maybe other people don’t have.

“Basically, why are you gonna root for the spoiled rich kid, you know what I mean? But then you come from somewhere else, I think there’s another side of that too where if there’s not as many fighters from where you’re from, or they’re just much more feverishly into sports like that, they’re gonna get behind their own. The only things in America that people really get into like that right now are football and baseball. And even then, you kinda gotta be a big deal, but we just don’t have that same fan base for other sports, especially combat sports.”

Gerald Meerschaert Hopes to Regain Some of the Momentum He Had in 2021

Following a tumultuous 2020 where he lost two out of three bouts, including a 17-second knockout against welterweight star Khamzat Chimaev, Gerald Meerschaert is intent on regaining some of the moment that he got from his spectacular 2021 run. Bouncing back from a rough patch in the wake of COVID-19, ‘GM3’ would go on to score three straight wins against Bartosz Fabi?ski, Makhmud Muradov and Dustin Stoltzfus. All three victories came by way of submission.

Hoping to carry that momentum into 2022, Gerald Meerschaert’s streak was halted by Krzysztof Jotko who defeated ‘GM3’ in April. Meerschaert is ready to get back to his winning ways, but he’ll have a tough test against Brazilian opponent Bruno Silva.

Silva’s seven-fight win streak was snapped by the man to knock out Israel Adesanya in combat sports, Alex Pereira. While Silva lasted the full 15 minutes, he was unable to match the power and precision of Pereira. Now ‘Blindado’ is ready to get his hand raised on Saturday night at the expense of submission machine Gerald Meerschaert.

Exclusive – David Onama ready for ‘intense’ Nate Landwehr fight, expects UFC San Diego barnburner

David Onama

Slated to return to the Octagon this weekend in a high-profile UFC Fight Night San Diego co-main event, exciting featherweight contender, David Onama believes a barn burning back-and-forth with rescheduled opponent, Nate Landwehr is in store – following a prior failed March matchup.

Onama, who currently boasts an impressive 10-1 professional record, made his leap to the UFC back in October of last year, holding his own in a tough, back-and-forth bow against former duel-weight Cage Warriors champion, Mason Jones.

Scoring a pair of impressive finishes since then, Onama turned in a vicious and violent knockout win over Gabriel Benitez back in February – landing a first round strikes stoppage after a barrage at the fence.

Just last month, Onama stopped Garreth Armfield with a second round arm-triangle midway through the penultimate frame.

Previewing his upcoming co-headliner with Landwehr during a recent interview with LowKick MMA reporter, Alex Behunin, Onama praised the ability and excitement factor that the former M-1 Global featherweight titleholder brings.

“As an opponent, I think Nate (Landwehr) is very, very – he’s a tough fighter,” David Onama said. “The guy is very durable, man. He walks people down, he stays in your face. He fights. He’s one of those fighters who is hard to take out, you know. There’s fighters that you can take out easy, but he’s one of those who is gonna bang and he’s gonna let you know, ‘I’m here to fight’ – not just one of these guys who you’re gonna put out.”

“That right there excites me, ‘cause I’m the same f*cking way,” David Onama said. “I’m like, ‘Awh, f*ck, you like this sh*t? I like it too’. That motherf*cking style, I like that sh*t. I like fighting those tough guys, ‘cause if you’re a tough fighter, I’m also gonna be tough too, you know what I mean. … If I feel like you’re not where I’m at, or you’re not on my level, there’s not a competition there for me. … I can’t f*cking wait, man, it’s gonna be f*cking awesome.”

David Onama elected against providing a distinct prediction for the anticipated clash

Quite the animated character, Onama maintains he’s ready for the “intense” persona and style Landwehr brings – particularly at the pre-fight weigh-ins.

“I’m a ‘weigh-ins guy’, I love the weigh-ins more than fighting,” David Onama said. “Like, fight night, I love it too, but weigh-ins, that’s my sh*t. We gonna see, you know what I mean. I love weigh-ins, I love the matchup – it’s a great fight for me. I’m sure Nate loves it too because we’re both similar. And it’s a sold out show, man – that’s f*cking awesome, bro.”

Marlon Vera accuses ‘fat c*nt’ Petr Yan of rejecting UFC San Diego headliner against him

Streaking UFC bantamweight contender, Marlon Vera has blasted former undisputed and interim division titleholder, Petr Yan – accusing the Dudinka native of rejecting this weekend’s UFC San Diego headlining slot against him, labelling the former gold holder a “fat c*nt” in his attempt to delay the bout.

Currently, in the midst of an impressive three-fight winning run, Marlon Vera occupies the #5 rank in the official bantamweight pile, off the back of a one-sided unanimous decision success against Rob Font back in April. The bout earned both Vera and Font Fight of the Night honors.

As for Yan, the former undisputed champion attempts to snap a run of two consecutive losses to rival and current division pacesetter, Aljamain Sterling – failing to successfully unify the bantamweight crowns at UFC 273 back in April. The Russian technician returns at UFC 280 in October against the surging, Sean O’Malley in a high-profile Abu Dhabi, UAE showdown.

For Vera, the RUCA (stylised as RVCA) mainstay continues in his headlining form this weekend, taking main event status against former two-time division titleholder, Dominick Cruz at UFC San Diego.

Marlon Vera claims the UFC initially offered him a fight with Petr Yan

However, Vera claims the promotion initially attempted to book him opposite Yan, before accusing the Dudinka striker of rejecting the San Diego showdown – in favor of an end-of-year matchup.

“Petr Yan, that fat c*nt, declined the fight, because he was eating pizza in Italy,” Marlon Vera told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “And he was like, “Oh, I don’t have time to make weight, I don’t have time to prepare”. If I’m that easy money, why don’t you say, ‘F*ck it, I’ll finish my slice and kick your ass”?”

“But, he declined the fight, he said he wants to fight in November, or October, so I was like, you ain’t that cool to wait for you, buddy,” Marlon Vera explained. “I want options, I wanna fight, I wanna make money. And they (the UFC) went, “Well, he declined, now we move – do you wanna fight Dominick Cruz?” I was like, “Sure, why not?” Why am I gonna lie? That’s not trash talking, that’s not beef between me and the Russian fat guy. He just didn’t have the time. He was on a little trip in Europe, good for him, dude.”

Prior to his April win over Font, Vera managed to stop former undisputed lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar with a third round front kick knockout back in November at Madison Square Garden, after avenging a prior defeat against Davey Grant.

Dominick Cruz plays down importance of MMA manager: ‘The UFC dictates sponsors and contracts’

Dominick CruzFormer UFC bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz has played down the importance of managers, agents, and representatives in mixed martial arts – particularly for fighters under the UFC banner, claiming the promotion holds most of the cards regardless – especially with sponsorship opportunities.  Cruz, a former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion under the organization’s scrutiny, is slated […]

Dominick Cruz

Former UFC bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz has played down the importance of managers, agents, and representatives in mixed martial arts – particularly for fighters under the UFC banner, claiming the promotion holds most of the cards regardless – especially with sponsorship opportunities.

Cruz, a former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion under the organization’s scrutiny, is slated to return to the Octagon this weekend – headlining UFC Fight Night San Diego against the surging Ecuadorian finisher, Marlon Vera.

In the midst of an impressive two-fight winning spree, Cruz bested Casey Kenney with a close, split decision last year – before handing Pedro Munhoz a unanimous judging loss in the featured preliminary card of UFC 269 back in December of last year.

Dominick Cruz questions what role managers in mixed martial arts play

Slated to return this weekend in a hometown matchup, Cruz shared his thoughts on the importance of representation and managers for fighters competing under the UFC banner. And admits that they’re not entirely imperative beyond initial negotiations.

“I think in the UFC, we’re signed to a six-fight contract, are we not – or a four-fight contract, usually,” Dominick Cruz said on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. “So, why would I pay somebody (a manager) for four fights, when it’s set (the contract) after one (fight)? That doesn’t make sense to me.”

“And on top of that, how are managers supposed to bring in sponsors when the UFC dictates the sponsors?” Dominick Cruz continued. “So now UFC dictates the sponsors, and UFC dictates the contract, so what is a manager actually doing?… But in the UFC, how many sponsors are even allowed in the UFC? Very few – and they’re already decided by the UFC. So the UFC sponsors who they want, and the UFC makes the contracts. … It doesn’t make sense to me.”

Twice clinching the undisputed bantamweight title, in a triumphant return from a slew of hampering injuries, Cruz defeated fellow former titleholder, T.J. Dillashaw in the main event of UFC Fight Night Boston back in January 2016.

Ode Osbourne UFC San Diego

Here at LowKick MMA, we recently had the chance to catch up with Ode Osbourne while he was refining his skills in the gym ahead of his Tyson Nam fight at UFC San Diego.

Among talking about things like his spiritual faith, Osbourne discussed how he’s “At peace” leading into this fight. While also discussing his change in weight classes and how it’s benefitted him so far.

“I feel at peace,” Ode Osbourne told Lowkick MMA’s Alex Behunin. “I feel like I’m finally coming together… It’s like climbing a mountain man, its been good. The move out here (to Las Vegas) was definitely worth it.”

Ode Osbourne’s Flourishing Spiritual Connection And How It’s Helped Him In Life and MMA

When asked about his change of weight class, and the current winning streak he’s on, Ode Osbourne gave all glory to god: “I really had to focus, and it sounds weird, but I really had to submit to god… That’s where change happens because I’ve been fighting (it), walking upstream for so long, my entire life. Ive finally put it all in god and let him take care of it. And since then, Ive been like a hot-knife through butter.”

‘The Jamaican Sensation’ would go on to elaborate on spreading the word of god. Saying it would be selfish of him to keep the word of god to himself. Later on, Osbourne and Behunin would touch on the change of weight.

“The reason why I went down to being a flyweight is because there’s less guys at flyweight division. Getting a belt at flyweight will be quicker then getting a belt at 135lbs. You could be sitting in the 135lbs division for three years to crack the top 10. Where as flyweight, you get three good wins in, and you’re top 10, top 15.”

“It’s an Uphill Battle”

“…You put your faith in god, and everything will come to fruition, and that’s literally what its been doing right now. Everything is coming to fruition, right now. And its not just right now, its gonna be that way the rest of my life. And its not gonna be easy, its an uphill battle.”

“I have this light in me,” Ode Osbourne continued. “I just wanna shine that thing bright, because there’s so much negativity. I want when my kids see me, and when people of the world see me on TV, they just start smiling. They’re like ‘Man, look at that dude Ode Osbourne, he’s just so positive’ I just wanna smile… Shine that light bright for everybody… Not just for the Jamaican kid, the African kid, the Mexican kid, the Chinese kid. Every kid in the world. I want everybody to see me doing what I’m doing, and just become exuberant, just become happy…”

Undoubtedly a true role model with that sentiment, soon, the tide of conversation turned to Osbourne’s impending battle with fearsome knockout artist Tyson Nam.

Ode Osbourne Breaks Down the Tyson Nam Fight

“I am extremely excited…” Ode Osbourne began. “I know Tyson Nam is a very seasoned opponent and I’m not looking past him. He’s dangerous, he’s got a nice cross. He’s knocked out all the same guys I’ve knocked out… Two knockout artists going against each other is going to be phenomenal. But, I’m gonna set one thing straight. I know what I possess and I’m going to go in there looking to finish him.”

‘The Jamaican Sensation’ laughed when asked about the matchup. “It couldn’t be a better matchup,” He said. Signaling out the knockout power both of them possess as an indicator this fight will be wild and entertaining.
