Joaquin Buckley vs. Colby Covington - UFC Tampa Highlights

Joaquin Buckley put an absolute beating on Colby Covington, forcing the cageside physician to step in and bring a stop to the bout late in the third round.

In the opening round of their UFC Tampa headliner, ‘New Mansa’ managed to stuff every one of Covington’s feeble takedown attempts and caught the three-time title challengers with a nasty shot that opened up a cut just over Covington’s left eye.

Despite the injury, Covington delivered a decent second round where he managed to muscle Buckley down to the mat, but was unable to capitalize on the favorable position. Following the end of the second stanza, the cageside physician made it clear that she wouldn’t let the fight go much longer with Covington’s eye already in a compromised state.

The third round saw Buckley continue his dominance on the feel while Covington desperately tried to work ‘New Mansa’ back to the mat. Before long, Covington logged another successful takedown, but Buckley was again able to wall-walk his way back up.

Once the two fighters were upright, referee Dan Miragliotta called for a pause to have the doctor check Covington’s eye once again. It only took seconds for her to determine that Covington should not continue fighting, forcing Miragliotta to bring a stop to the bout with only seconds left in the third.

Joaquin Buckley added to the woes of Colby Covington on Saturday night, battering the former interim welterweight champion in the main event of UFC Tampa.

Buckley clearly took the opening round, stopping every takedown attempt from Covington and damaging his eye, including a knockdown of “Chaos” late in the round. The rising contender continued to land well in the second round, and while he was taken down once, “New Mansa” managed to work his way up with strength and still showed strong defense.

Covington, who was warned about the cut around his eye that had been busted up over two rounds, continued to be battered as the fight entered the third. Even when the fight was on the ground, Buckley’s attack showed no sign of slowing, targeting that cut.

In the midst of the third round, the doctor was called in to check on the cut and ruled that Covington could no longer safely continue.

This marked Buckley’s sixth straight win and perhaps his biggest since a viral knockout of Impa Kasaganay. This most likely will give him a top-five contender as his next opponent.

Covington, meanwhile, has now lost three of his last four. This was his first fight in almost exactly one year since his unsuccessful challenge of then-UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards at UFC 296.

The venue played host to Octagon action on Dec. 14, as the mixed martial arts leader closed out its schedule for 2024 with a strong lineup that featured a former interim champion, ranked contenders, experienced veterans, and some promising prospects.

If this was the last time we saw Cub Swanson in the Octagon, he went out with a bang by pulling off a devastating knockout of Billy Quarantillo in the co-main event of UFC Tampa.

The two pulled off an entertaining first round, with both men looking to pick the other apart and each having their moments of control and rocking the other. They then fought another competitive second frame before the fight came to an end in the final round.

Swanson landed a one-two that dropped Quarantillo out cold, giving “Killer” a walk-off victory.

Swanson has traded wins and losses consecutively since the start of 2021, and he may increase his record for the most post-fight bonuses in UFC/WEC featherweight history.

“Billy Q,” meanwhile, has now lost three of his last four.

Cub Swanson added another highlight-reel knockout to his resume, sleeping Billy Quarantillo with a booming right hand in the third round of the UFC Tampa co-main event.

Things got off to a fast and furious start with Swanson walking down Quarantillo. Swanson appeared to have a clear speed advantage, but it was Quarantillo who seemingly landed the biggest strike of the opening round, catching Swanson with a clean left before landing a takedown in the waning seconds of the first.

The sound round was just as frenetic with both fighters landing some big shots, including a brutal knee that caught Swanson on the chin. Swanson ate it and kept moving forward, landing a series of sneaky right hands. However, it was Quarantillo who likely took the round after landing a couple of takedowns up against the fence.

The pace showed no signs of slowing in the third with both fighters standing and banging in the center of the Octagon. Just past the one-minute mark, Quarantillo shot in for a single leg, but Swanson managed to shake his leg free and circle away. Letting his hands go with the fight on the line, Swanson connected with a left followed by a booming right hand that immediately rendered Quarantillo unconscious.

Manel Kape looked to make a statement as to why he should be next in line for Alexandre Pantoja and the UFC flyweight championship. And perhaps he’s made a case after his finish of Bruno Silva at UFC Tampa.

Kape’s path to victory in the fight didn’t come without battle scars. Silva landed three low blows on “Starboy” before the halfway point of the fight, resulting in the Brazilian being deducted one point.

Ultimately, that didn’t make a difference for Silva. Kape’s offense was on full display over the course of the second round, and though Silva landed some power during the third frame, the top 10 contender landed a kick that started a flurry and quickly put “Bulldog” away.

Silva argued (ironically) that the initial kick was a low blow, but it wasn’t enough to overturn referee Keith Petersen’s original no call.

Kape has now won five of his last six fights and rebounds from his lackluster fight with Muhammad Mokaev at UFC 304 this past July.

Meanwhile, this loss snaps a four-fight win streak that Silva rode into UFC Tampa on.
