(Yeah, yeah, yeah…WE KNOW you guys want a CP app. We’re working on it. And your t-shirts are in the mail.)

Anybody who has searched MMA apps knows that there are dozens of products on the market. This may be a stretch for some of our readers, but let’s assume we all have interests outside of  the MMA world. In a scenario like this, where we don’t all have the time to spend our days and nights trolling the comment section here like Xenophon, it is necessary to sort through the clutter and find the essential apps.

Not to worry, Potato Nation; we have you covered.

Cage Potato and Boost Mobile have teamed up to save you money, time and memory space by providing you with this Comprehensive 2012 MMA App Buyer’s Guide. While the odd gem may have slipped through the cracks, most of the best apps for your hard earned money are listed and reviewed after the jump.

News/Analysis

MMA Underground

Developer: Adept Mobile

Price: $1.99

This is by far my favourite MMA app for a number of reasons. I go to the “Forums” section multiple times a day for a combination of behind the scenes information from people like Dana White and Joe Rogan and analysis from 16-year-old  pro-wrestling converts who live in their parents’ basement. It’s that dichotomy that makes the Underground a unique app that is a must-have for the serious fan. There are some negatives. For the casual fan, the cut and paste style “News” page isn’t very comprehensive and the developers are slow to satisfy customer feedback and concerns. I also seem to have the occasional problem loading and refreshing the Forums and News. Quibbles aside, the app has a slick design and is very easy to navigate. With information on local events and an official database of over 250,000 fighters this app is worth the price for all major fight fans.

MMA Junkie

Developer: FreeRange360

Cost: Free

MMA Junkie is like the Associated Press of the MMA world, shying away from editorializing and focusing strictly on news. The MMA Junkie App is a great free addition to your smartphone, giving you access to all of Junkie’s comprehensive “News” content. The app also gives to the ability to save articles to read later and to email articles to friends. The best feature is the up-to-the-minute scoring from the live shows to keep you informed of the prelims and main card if you’re not able to actually watch. The upcoming “Events” section is easy to access, and provides  a decent reminder of fights to look forward to. The app is simple and well-designed just like the website and I give it a solid endorsement for both casual and hard-core fans.

UFC

Developer: MobiTV

Price: Free

This functions that this app possesses have huge potential but at this point in time, there are way too many glitches to make it useful. I suppose the ability to pay $44.99 to watch a PPV event on your phone may appeal to some people who have no other choice, but the quality isn’t good enough and it’s far too small when you have the option to watch a live event on a laptop or television. The most convenient aspect of the UFC app is the alerts for press conferences and weigh-ins and the ability to watch them on your smartphone; however, I wonder how much interest the casual fan would have in these options as opposed to just getting a summary of the highlights after they’re done. The biggest problem with the app is that sections like “News”, “Fight Cards” and “Fighter Bios” have broken links and are not updated as frequently as they should be. Also, many of the “Videos” just don’t seem to load at all. This app is a huge disappointment and I expected more from the preeminent MMA organization because simply put,  they really should be leading the pack like their contemporaries in other sports like the NHL and NBA.

In addition to more fluid gameplay, this edition of the game will include the much anticipated PRIDE mode, complete with head stomps, soccer kicks, Lenne Hardt, Steven Quadros and Bas Rutten.

The demo only lets you play for one round, but the full release will be available in stores in three weeks, so don’t freak out over it.

THQ promises more intuitive controls for the reboot, but we’ll be the judge of that.

There’s nothing worse than being beaten by a smug nine-year-old button masher at Best Buy, so they better be telling the truth.

Hit me up at Gamertag XenophonisMe when you get the full version and we’ll throw down. Maybe a CP Undisputed Ope Weight GP is in order.

Video of the Day: If You Prank Frank Mir, Expect to Get F*cked With

(Video courtesy of YouTube/UFCTHQ)

THQ released this hilarious video today of Frank Mir’s final day of motion capture filming for the next edition of UFC Undisputed. Apparently this dude from THQ thought it would be funny to get all of the fighters in the game to do the Hokey Pokey — either for his own satisfaction since he was likely picked on in high school or because he was planning on releasing the footage as a special feature or Easter egg.

Well, either Frank caught on to the ploy or someone tipped him off. Either way, he made the prankster shit his pants.

Whoa! PRIDE Mode Looks Pretty Awesome for UFC: Undisputed 3

(Video courtesy of YouTube/IGN)

If you’re going to make a PRIDE mode promo for the new Undisputed game, there’s nobody (not even our good pal, Jerry Millen) better to pump us up for it than Bas Rutten.

IGN posted this awesome trailer for UFC: Undisputed 3 today and it makes us want to go out and soccer kick and headstomp fools to prove that “PRIDE never die.”

Maybe we’ll save the urge until tomorrow night when we head down to the local watering hole to hang with a bunch of drunken MMA experts to watch the UFC 138 re-broadcast. Either that or we’ll do what we always do and make bets with the idiots who are either too drunk or too oblivious to know that the fights happened earlier in the afternoon.

Admit it, you’re going to try using our well-crafted plan tomorrow night. A word of advice: wait until after the second or third main card bout since most people are still warming up at that point and it sucks to be called out for scamming Mr. Spray Tan and Frosted Tips, especially if you have to make the walk of shame out before the end of the event.

Until then, re-watch this clip a few dozen times and daydream about how fun it’s going to be to stomp your online opponent’s melon into the PRIDE canvas until he “mysteriously” disconnects from the server.

I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but this game actually might be better than PRIDE FC: Fighting Championsship for PS2.

Randy Couture Advised EA Sports on New MMA Game

Back in the day when mainstream culture believed the only rule in MMA was that you couldn’t wrap your hands in shards of glass, no one would have dreamed that a decade later thousands of people would be throwing down $50 to buy video game versions of the sport (yes…we also cry with joy that we’re no longer limited to the original Play Station console…). Things have changed…and for the better.

Now, we’ve gone on about THQ’s UFC Undisputed series before, and there is little doubt that the game has been a massive success for Zuffa. Of course, where there is money to be made people will follow, and gaming / MMA nerds are now anxiously waiting for the release of EA Sport’s MMA game later this year. According to a recent report from MMA Fighting, in the interest of making the game as good as possible, EA brought in Randy Couture several times to get his feedback on it. The company’s Randy Chase was quoted saying:

“Randy has been to our studio five or six times and has spent a lot of time with our developers and even though he’s not really a gamer, he has shared so much about the fights, and about how he trains for specific opponents,” Chase said. “One of the things he talked about is that when you’re training, if you’re training to fight a wrestler, you want wrestlers in your camp. And that’s something that we really put into our career mode.”

Nice job Randy. And isn’t it nice to know that you’re involvement with the game won’t result in your UFC banishment after all…
