Mark Hunt’s fairy tale journey through the world of mixed martial arts came to a screeching halt this year. Since the Pride FC days, ‘The Super Samoan’ has been a solid fan favorite. Joining the UFC in 2010, Hunt ignored the offer to have his contract bought out by UFC president Dana White. Instead opting to roll the dice in the UFC octagon, the former K-1 champion encountered a tough debut on US soil. Submitted by Sean McCorkle at UFC 119, Hunt faced a do-or-die opponent in Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 126. Scoring knockout of the night at UFC 126, ‘The Super Samoan’ then went on to win a further three straight.

By 2013, Hunt was becoming a household name. The fan friendly one-punch KO artist stepped up to face Junior dos Santos at UFC 160. Although losing to the former heavyweight champion, ‘The Super Samoan’ put in a gallant effort during their exciting scrap. Facing Antonio Silva in a thrilling five round draw, Hunt would then become the first man to KO Roy Nelson in the UFC. Harrowing losses to Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic, and stunning wins over ‘Bigfoot’ and Frank Mir led Hunt to UFC 200 and Brock Lesnar. Here’s where the Pride veteran’s career has pretty much ended.

UFC 200/USADA

Losing a one-sided decision to Brock Lesnar at the milestone UFC 200 event was a tough pill to swallow, but one Mark Hunt took on the chin. Up until Lesnar’s failed drug test was revealed by USADA some days after the fact, ‘The Super Samoan’ remained gracious in defeat. The moment the WWE star’s USADA pop was announced, Hunt went off the rails. Blasting the UFC for ‘harbouring cheaters,’ and allowing Lesnar to receive a four-month pre-fight test exemption, Hunt all but wrapped up his UFC career with a serious of scornful rants.

Announcing he’d push for a fighters association, it was clear Mark Hunt had enough of competing against fighters on TRT or steroids (allegedly, in some cases). Now it looks like he’s taken it a step further, via MMAMania, as ‘The Super Samoan’ is now seeking legal advice in a possible lawsuit against the UFC:

Hunt vs. UFC

“It’s the third time I’ve had to fight a steroid user. I don’t think the penalties are harsh enough. I don’t think it is a fair environment. I’ve probably fought more juicers than anybody. The difference is now is that I realized I can actually lose an eye or something and not be able to compete again. I know fighting is kind of hard and all, but when these losers are taking steroids it makes it even worse.”

Retaining legal service from Christina Denning from Higgs, Fletcher and Mack, a law firm based in San Diego, Hunt revealed he’s possibly seeking legal proceedings against the UFC. Here’s what his lawyer said on the situation:

“We’ve got the UFC granting an exemption from the four-month drug testing requirements in order for Lesnar to participate in UFC 200,” she began. “UFC 200 happened in July, I believe, and he didn’t sign on with UFC until June, a month before. However, Brock and the UFC had been in discussions for several months beforehand about Brock Lesnar’s possible participation in the UFC and everybody understood that he was planning on coming into the UFC. That causes you to wonder, well, why didn’t he sign on early and get into the program.”

“Well, I can’t say with certainty and I don’t want to throw out allegations that are unsupported, but one could suspect that the UFC and Brock Lesnar both knew that they were going to have a problem with these random drug tests and so they waited and sat on this announcement so he could get clean. And then he gets into the program and has a couple of results where he passes and then he starts taking whatever substance it is–and I’m not an expert on it–but he starts taking this substance knowing that this is a one-time stop in the UFC and he is now going back to the WWE, where he is part-time and not subject to any discipline there and it’s like this guy is invincible.”

Brock and Hunt

RICO Act

“What’s concerning is the UFC”s decision to grant him this exemption when the anti-doping policy … there is specific and this is where the law comes in and you argue over vague terms, but it says there has got to be extraordinary circumstances for granting that exemption,” Denning continued. “I don’t know, I”m not an insider like you, but there are reports out there that I haven’t substantiated, that this is the only time the UFC has granted such an exemption. Then you have to factor in the fact that UFC 200 came around the time of the 4.2 billion dollar sale of the UFC was getting ready to close and they’ve already lost some money because of the doping violations.”

Hunt:

“You can say the UFC is trying to do everything they can to try and catch drug users, but then why would they give him a four-month exemption?” asked Hunt. “I think they actually knew. They actually knew the pro wrestler was on the juice. All those losers are juicing. It’s all fake. It’s not a natural competition. They can do whatever they want to look good for the audience because it’s all scripted. How do I know this? I did pro wrestling in Japan myself. I’ve taken a lot of fights on short notice, but this one they gave him a four-month exemption. They had the sale on. I’ve had enough of it and I shouldn’t have to suffer, neither should my family, because these guys are taking the juice. And lose out on money that I should be making because this dickhead is coming around here with his steroids. And why is it that they are not making penalties even more harsher for these guys because it’s a violent sport about hurting people.”

Denning:

“One of these things that we are exploring–and same with Brock Lesnar there is causative action against him as well–but one of the things that we are exploring is actually racketeering, RICO violations, because there is a pattern for the benefit of the UFC to gain monetary benefit off of engaging in this behavior. And it’s given that there is a pattern and Mark can speak to this, but not only Mark, whose fought three people that have tested positive and they asked him to fight some of them again, there are other fighters in the UFC, who do not take any banned substances, who have also been put in the same situation. And my understanding is for those persons, sometimes their next fight’s compensation is dependent on the outcome of what that result is.”

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has never been known for mincing his words. Especially when it comes to performance enhancing drug users, ‘The Count’ speaks his mind to the fullest extent. Having fought multiple opponents who have failed for PED’s during his UFC career, Bisping’s frustration is somewhat understandable. when appearing on Ric Flair’s podcast last week, the 185-pound boss went in on former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

After the UFC 200 USADA debacle left the card essentially in ruins, Bisping declared he would knock Lesnar out with a single punch during the now infamous tirade. More information about Lesnar’s failed test has since arisen, as his lawyer claims foot cream could be the source of the estrogen blockers flagged by USADA. Brock’s pre-fight questionnaire omits any admission of using such products.

Bisping Goes Off…Again

There’s been no response from Brock Lesnar, but that hasn’t stopped Michael Bisping from continuing his rant. The WWE crossover and former UFC heavyweight champion’s failed test has clearly hit a nerve with ‘The Count.’ Here’s what the angry Brit told MMAFighting.com:

“Brock Lesnar tested positive for steroids, it’s as simple as that. I have a very strong opinion, so if you’re going to come over here and fight and take steroids, you’re a pussy. Simple as that. You come in here and act tough, but then you’ve got to take steroids? So which is it? Are you are tough guy or are you not a tough guy? And if you’re taking steroids, then you’re not a tough guy, because you’re mentally weak and you’re a coward.”

Jacked White Boy

Before UFC 200, Lesnar answered insinuations of steroid use by Mark Hunt by claiming he was a ‘jacked white boy, so deal with it.’ It wasn’t until after the fight against Hunt that USADA revealed Lesnar’s failed test, and the drama really began. ‘The Super Samoan’ fell out with the UFC in a big way, and was even more furious than Bisping about the ongoing steroid saga.

Are the UFC and USADA doing enough to discourage steroid use in MMA? Further to that, does anyone see this tainted supplement defense as an exploitation of loopholes? If so, maybe cheating in MMA is unavoidable.

Mark Hunt’s journey through the UFC heavyweight ranks started way back in 2010. After leaving the Japanese MMA scene with a losing 5-6 record, ‘The Super Samoan’ decided to try his hand under the Zuffa banner. This was all against the advice of UFC president Dana White, who reportedly offered Hunt a lump sum to drop his dream of fighting for the UFC. The heavy-handed K-1 veteran looked to be on the brink after losing to Sean McCorkle in his UFC debut.

Somehow Hunt managed to turn his career around, and built up a four fight win streak including stunning knockouts over Stefan Struve and Cheick Kongo. A gutsy albeit losing performance against Junior dos Santos at UFC 160 cemented Hunt’s place in the hearts of the fans. After a fight of the year winner against Antonio Silva, the Pride veteran would become the first man to KO Roy Nelson in the UFC.

Hunt vs. Nelson

Walk Away KO

Tough losses to Stipe Miocic and Fabricio Werdum once again threw up talks of retirement for Mark Hunt. As we’d become accustomed to throughout his career, Hunt wasn’t going to give up. He once again built a winning steak, this time with trademark walk-away knockouts over Frank Mir and Bigfoot Silva. Then came arguably his biggest fight to date, as Mark Hunt was booked in to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 200. Ironically this bout would also prove to be his most controversial, not by his own doing though.

After being smothered for three rounds by Lesnar on the already waning UFC 200 main card, Hunt was respectful and humble in defeat. This didn’t last long though, as days later we learned Lesnar had failed a drug test. Following the announcement of Lesnar’s USADA bust, Mark Hunt lost his cool.

Mark Hunt’s last fight?

The events following UFC 200 may confirm Mark Hunt will never fight for the promotion again. It’s far from his last fight though, as ‘The Super Samoan’ now stands against his employers. Furious that not only Lesnar, but also Silva and Mir had all failed drug tests, Hunt unleashed his anger during a series of interviews. Also taking to social media, the former K-1 champ blasted anyone who supported Lesnar, made massive accusations against the UFC and declared he’d be starting a fighters association.

During his most recent post on Facebook and Instagram, Hunt has taken swipes at his fellow fighters. The one-punch knockout artist claims fighters under the UFC banner are scared to speak up.

Clearly still very angry, Mark Hunt also reacted to the news of Jon Jones’ lawsuit…

UFC 200 was all set to be one of the most exciting cards of the modern era, up until fight week that is. Main event star and former undisputed light-heavyweight don Jon Jones sent UFC 200 in to a tail spin just 72 hours before it went down. A failed drug test dating back to mid-June saw ‘Bones’ removed from the pay-per-view card. Daniel Cormier eventually faced Anderson Silva in a short notice three round bout on the main card. Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes were promoted to the main event.

Jones was distraught during the press conference held the very next day after USADA broke the news. Eventually we learned Jones and Brock Lesnar had both fallen foul to the tainted supplements that seem to be plaguing athletes lately. UFC president Dana White would later state both men could face shortened suspensions. Jon Jones may not be out of the woods yet though.

Lawsuit

BloodyElbow.com reports that one irate fan who attended UFC 200 has taken his case to court. Sean Slattery filed a lawsuit against Jones and his management team, first round management, in the San Diego supreme court. As told by Paul Gift on BE:

According to the complaint, Slattery is an MMA fan who purchased tickets to UFC 200 “for the express purpose” of watching Jones. He alleges, “Just before the fight, however, Jones was dropped from the fight card after officials learned that he had tested positive for banned performance-enhancing and/or masking substances. Plaintiff was thus robbed and defrauded of the value of the tickets, wherein he suffered both economic and non-economic harm, as a result of Jones’s actions in violating anti-doping regulations, and First Round’s complicity therein. In the alternative, Jones failed to disclose other controlled substances, and in doing so was negligent, to the relevant testing officials which again deprived Plaintiff of the value of his tickets.”022_Jon_Jones_gallery_post.0.0.0[1]

Yep, it’s for real

“Slattery goes on to allege that Jones and First Round Management “created a duty” to the ticket-buying public to act reasonably in advance of his fight. Including but not limited to refraining from the administration of banned substances to Jones or failure to disclose prescription medication to testing officials. Taking measures to ensure that ostensibly non-banned supplement mixtures did not in fact did contain banned substances.”

Jon Jones does have an obligation to declare everything he ingests during in-competition periods. Does this requirement by USADA hold weight with ticket buying fans in a lawsuit? That’s yet to be seen. Manny Pacquiao was recently sued by two Las Vegas residents over failing to disclose an injured shoulder before the Floyd Mayweather fight. It’ll be interesting to see where this one ends up going.

UFC 202 went down this past Saturday August 20 and the thrilling main event is still fresh in our minds. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz met in a rematch of their UFC 196 tilt and the result was an instant classic. For five rounds they went toe-to-toe in a clean striking battle, leaving everything they had in the octagon. The judges eventually scored a majority decision for the Irishman, evening the score between the two fierce rivals.

As with their first fight, the fun did not end in the octagon. Just moments after their highly entertaining brawl Diaz was lighting up a vape pen during the post-fight media scrum. When asked what was in the device, Diaz responded by saying it was ‘CBD oil.’ The substance is a Cannabis derived oil and known to help the healing process for a number of medical conditions.

Trouble?

It turns out the UFC’s partner in drug testing of athletes, USADA, is looking in to this potential infraction. As reported first by MMAFighting.com, USADA is currently investigating this possible violation:

“I can confirm that USADA is aware of the situation and is currently gathering information in order to determine the next appropriate steps,”

Nick’s Fight

Nick Diaz has just come off an 18-month suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission following a highly controversial hearing in 2015. The NAC first banned the older Diaz brother for five years, and they weren’t ever able to present solid evidence to prove he was actually over the limit of 150ng/ml of Marijuana metabolites.

If Nate Diaz is found to be in violation of USADA’s strict policies, he could well face a year on the sideline for his use of CBD oil. Although he’s already stated he won’t fight again until a McGregor trilogy is made, this is not great news. That said, the doping agency can use their own discretion in terms of the punishments severity. If chosen they could actually give him a written warning.

CBD Oil

For those wondering, CBD oil does not induce phsycho-activity and is proven to contain far less side effects than THC. The substance has a proven record in treating numerous medical illnesses. USADA would still consider Marijuana a performance enhancing drug though.

UFC heavyweight contender Mark Hunt is in a state of disarray at present. After losing a decision to Brock Lesnar at UFC 200, we learned ‘The Super Samoan’ had once again faced a fighter who could not get by the USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) drug tests. News emerged that Lesnar had not only failed a pre-fight drug test, but also a dope screen conducted on the night of the July 9 event had come back positive for banned substance Clomiphene.

The reason for the anti-estrogen being found in Lesnar’s sample is yet to be addressed by the promotion or the WWE superstar in public. To this day Hunt says he’s not heard anything from UFC president Dana White, and that’s ed to a number of scathing statements from the disgruntled 42-year old Pride FC veteran. Hunt first demanded Lesnar hand over his record-breaking $2.5 million purse from UFC 200, only to be shut down when the promotion revealed they would not fine Lesnar.

Brock Lesnar has his hand raised against Mark Hunt at UFC 200 on July 9, 2016…

‘The Super Samoan’ would go on the offensive against his employers and also USADA, blasting both parties for not presenting enough of a deterrent for drug cheats in MMA. He made some rather shocking accusations towards the UFC, none of which have been responded to, and publicly called for fighter to join his union.

Hunt’s points included questions regarding fighters safety against those using steroids, Lesnar’s two-year ban essentially being irrelevant now he’s pocketed the literal boat load of money, and also the possibility of criminal charges for fighters who are juicing.

Michael Bisping Supports Mark Hunt

One man who knows a lot about being the clean athlete taking on a division rampant with steroids is current UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. His new-found success since the USADA era started is perhaps a sign of things to come for combat sports as a whole. Not surprisingly ‘The Count’ is sympathetic to Hunt’s plight.

Bisping’s long history of fighting against competitors who would later go on to fail drug tests is eerily similar to Hunt’s recent run of opponents. Still to say the promotion is truly any closer to eradicating steroid cheats would be exaggerating greatly. Sure, they are catching a whole lot more, but these guys and girls are still trying their luck.

Mark Hunt will need as much support as he can get in unionizing the athletes of the UFC, and the middleweight champion Michael Bisping is a good start. The real question is how many fighters are actually likely to sack up and stand behind Hunt when push becomes shove?
