Daniel Cormier expanded on his recent tweet about Derrick Lewis.
The knockout went viral on social media and reaffirmed Lewis as one of the hardest hitters in the UFC as he now holds the record for most heavyweight knockouts (12).
Cormier, in particular, notably tweeted that Lewis had the most power out of anyone in the UFC.
However, many contested that Francis Ngannou had more power than Lewis and that would be a fair shout given how he has won his last four fights.
To that, Cormier responded:
“Everyone started going Francis, Francis, Francis. People — there is a reason Francis Ngannou was so tentative in the fight against Derrick Lewis,” Cormier said on his show with Ariel Helwani (via Middle Easy). “It’s the only time he’s ever fought like that. Francis just bullrushes everybody from Stipe Miocic to Alistair Overeem. Almost a blatant disregard for them and their power.
“He stood and took pictures with Derrick Lewis because of the power coming back in his direction. So let’s not go acting as if Derrick Lewis doesn’t have power to match anyone in the heavyweight division, even Francis Ngannou. And when you talk about knockouts, nobody has more than Derrick so how do you say that another guy has more power than him? And that’s not a knock on Francis — that’s just reality.”
Cormier is referring to the 2018 Ngannou vs. Lewis fight that saw both fighters throw few strikes in what was one of the more disappointing matchups in recent history. Lewis would win via unanimous decision.
Of course, it can also be argued that Ngannou was affected by his loss to Miocic at the time. That said, nobody can argue that Lewis isn’t at the very top when it comes to power.
Derrick Lewis is interested in fighting Alistair Overeem next. Lewis is coming off a devastating uppercut knockout of Curtis Blaydes in the UFC Vegas 19 headliner in Las Vegas last night. Derrick Lewis is interested in fighting Alistair Overeem next.
It put him on a four-fight winning streak as he is now firmly in title contention again. However, Lewis has no qualms about who he could be fighting next.
He’s even interested in an Overeem fight despite the latter coming off a TKO defeat to Alexander Volkov earlier this month.
“I want Overeem next,” Lewis said at the post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “I’m already greased and oiled up for him, so we ready.
“… Soon as possible. As soon as he passes his concussion protocol, whatever, his suspension, whatever he got. I don’t care [about his loss]. He’s had a couple of losses in a row. It’d be cool just to fight him, because he’s a so-called legend. So it’d be cool to fight somebody like that. And also, he’s been talking trash. He’s been saying his teammate, Curtis, could handle this lightweight. We’ve been trying to fight him for years, and he turned down the fight four times already.”
Of course, after a devastating knockout like that, many wouldn’t blame Overeem if he didn’t want that fight. However, Lewis believes his current situation might make him take the fight this time.
“He might take it,” Lewis added. “He’s been hit in the head a few times, so he might forget all about what happened tonight. So he’ll probably take it.
“… He’s from Netherlands, so you never know. Them guys out there, they stay high.”

Derrick Lewis has once more upset the odds — stopping the incredible run of the #2 ranked Curtis Blaydes via a massive second round uppercut knockout.
Opening with a low kick to the lead of Lewis, Blaydes almost paid the price closing range early — with the New Orleans native firing back in the pocket. Pressuring Lewis back to the fence, a cautious, measured Blaydes was dominating the Octagon in the early goings.
Finding his mark with a right hand, Blaydes punished a wild, swinging Lewis. Landing an inadvertent eye-poke, Lewis and Blaydes seen a brief stoppage in the action before the end of the round.
Successfully defending an early round shot from Blaydes, Lewis was warned by referee, Herb Dean to keep his hands closed to avoid eye-pokes. Launching a massive upper-cut on Blaydes’ next entry for a takedown, Lewis sent the Elevation Fight Team mainstay to the canvas out cold — landing two subsequent punches before Dean could separate the two. An incredible twelve Octagon knockout win for Derrick Lewis.
