Robert Whittaker believes he will be too much for Kelvin Gastelum.

Whittaker meets Gastelum in a middleweight headliner at UFC Vegas 24 which takes place April 17. It will be a short-notice fight after Gastelum stepped in for Paulo Costa who had to withdraw due to illness.

However, it isn’t the first time these two fighters have prepared for each other as they were initially set to collide for the middleweight title at UFC 234 in 2019 only for Whittaker to pull out on the day of the fight.

That said, “The Reaper” is healthy and in a much better place now. And coming off two unanimous decision wins over Darren Till and Jared Cannonier, Whittaker is expecting a finish against Gastelum.

“I think I’m going to be too much for him,” Whittaker told MMA Junkie. “My striking is too crisp. I think it’s too fast. I think I’ve got too many weapons. He may try to take me down a couple of times, and I only think it’ll work to his detriment because it’s a five-round fight and wrestling takes it out of you.

“I think I put him away in the second. … All I know is I’m going to go into this fight the best Robert Whittaker I’ve been, and I’m going into this fight very happy – and a happy Rob is a very dangerous one.”

Gastelum, meanwhile, returned to the win column against Ian Heinisch in February with a relatively uneventful unanimous decision victory after enduring a three-fight losing streak. What kicked that skid off was a five-round war with Israel Adesanya which Whittaker believes took a lot out of Gastelum

However, things will be much different now that Gastelum is back in the win column.

“Fights like that definitely take it out of you. So the war he had with Izzy – yeah, it takes it out of you,” Whittaker added. “You can’t have too many fights like that. I know first hand because it took it out of me. But he’s back in the winning column now, so his confidence is going to be higher than it has been and he’s going to come at me. He’s got nothing to lose, so I think it’ll be an interesting fight.

“Definitely, the styles make fights. He went into that fight with a game plan of wrestling and controlling the fight that way. I don’t think he’s going to be able to do that against me, so he’ll adjust. I’ll adjust and we’ll have to see what happens on the night.”

Holland Vettori

A short-notice middleweight headliner between Marvin Vettori and Kevin Holland is seemingly official for UFC Vegas 24.

Vettori was originally set to take on Darren Till at the Fight Night event taking place April 10 at the Apex facility in Las Vegas. However, he had to pull out earlier this week after suffering a broken collarbone.

Holland was quick to throw his name in the hat and had already accepted a short-notice fight with Vettori. All that was required was the green light from Vettori’s side.

Two days later and the fight is seemingly official as per Holland.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani would confirm the fight as well.

“‘See you April 10,’ Kevin Holland says. Kevin Holland x Marvin Vettori is signed for April 10. Five rounds.”

It will also tie the record for the shortest layoff in between main event fights.

“Holland just fought on March 20. So he will tie records set by Michael Bisping and Deiveson Figueiredo, who went 21 days between main events, per @ESPNStatsInfo.”

Holland, of course, fought late last month when he suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Derek Brunson.

It snapped a five-fight winning streak for “Big Mouth” who continues to prove he’s willing to fight anyone, anytime by stepping in to fight Vettori just 21 days later.

As for Vettori, he is coming off a unanimous decision win over Jack Hermansson. He has also won his last four in a row.

Whittaker Gastelum

The official poster for UFC Vegas 24 featuring a middleweight clash between Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum has been released.

Whittaker was originally set to take on Paulo Costa at the Fight Night event taking place April 17. However, Costa had to pull out earlier this month due to illness.

Luckily for Whittaker as well as combat sports fans, he will still be competing as he will take on Gastelum on short notice instead. And the UFC released the official poster for the event on Tuesday.

You can view it below:

As stated in the caption, it’s a fight that is two years in the making.

The pair were initially supposed to collide in February 2019 for the middleweight title only for Whittaker to pull out following the weigh-ins.

Whittaker would return later that year and go on to lose his middleweight title after getting knocked out by Israel Adesanya. Whittaker has since bounced back with back-to-back unanimous decision wins over Darren Till and Jared Cannonier.

Gastelum would also lose to Adesanya following a five-round war that saw the latter win the interim title and go on to face Whittaker. Gastelum would lose a further two fights to Till and Jack Hermansson before returning to the win column against Ian Heinisch last month.

The winner of this fight could very well go on to get a rematch with Adesanya.
