Matt Schnell was on the wrong side of one of UFC Vegas 87’s most brutal knockouts.

Just 26 seconds into the second round, Schnell’s opponent, Steve Erceg, unleashed a hellacious left that instantly sent ‘Danger’ crashing to the canvas. Perhaps more brutal than the final blow was the sound of Schnell’s head bouncing off the canvas.

The KO earned Erceg a well-deserved $50,000 performance bonus. Sadly, all Schnell got for his trouble was being roasted by referee Chris Tognoni who was assigned to the main card opener.

“Man, I’m not sure what was worse, the punch or you hitting your head on the canvas, man,” Tognoni said while patting Schnell on the chest. “You’ll see on the film.”

“Did you hear it?” he asked Schnell’s corner, who responded with a small nod.

Though the subject of some criticism in the past, Tognoni has proven himself to be a competent referee, for the most part, and likely meant well with his comments. However, his poor choice of words and/or delivery made it seem like he was sh*t-talking Schnell seconds after his soul was separated from his body.

A 13-fight veteran of the UFC, Matt Schnell has now lost three of his last four bouts inside the Octagon, the lone win coming against Sumudaerji via second-round submission in July 2022.

As for Steve Erceg, the Aussie standout is now 3-0 since signing with the promotion last year. In addition to his victory inside The APEX on Saturday, ‘Astro Boy’ has also scored wins over David Dvo?ák and Alessandro Costa.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik lands corner stoppage win over Shamil Gaziev in lacklustre fight UFC Vegas 87 highlights

Returning himself to the winner’s enclosure, Suriname kickboxing talent, Jairzinho Rozenstruik handed Dagestan-born contender, Shamil Gaziev his first professional loss in their UFC Vegas 87 main event clash tonight — forcing a fourth round corner’s stoppage TKO win — with the Bahrain newcomer appearing to signal his intentions of missing a fifth and final round start.

Rozenstruik, the current number twelve ranked heavyweight contender, made his return to the Apex facility tonight where he has previously headlined for the promotion — turning in his first victory since a blsitering 23-second KO win over Chris Daukaus.

As for Gaziev, the former Brave CF contender made his Octagon debut late last year with a knockout win over Martin Buday, following a successful outing on Dana White’s Contender Series.

And fast-tracked to a main event fight in just his sophomore outing under the organization’s banner, Gaziev struggled early with the timing and fast hands of experienced striker, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, who also managed to defend numerous laborious takedown attempts from the Russian-born contender.

Turning up the heat in the fourth frame, Jairzinho Rozenstruik almost forced the issue against a clearly frustrated Gaziev — forcing the latter against the fence before the buzzer with a fierce and frenzied striking combination.

And ahead of the slated start of a fifth and final round, Gaziev argued with his corner in his native language, appearing less than interested in competing further tonight.

With referee, Marc Goddard ordering translations from his chief cornerman, Gaziev allegedly claimed he was struggling with his vision, with the official waving off the fight after instructing the Octagon-side physician to check on the unbeaten former — resulting in a TKO win for striking veteran, Rozenstruik.

Umar Nurmagomedov

Umar Nurmagomedov faced some early adversity against newcomer Bezkat Almakhan at UFC Vegas 87, but the undefeated Dagestani standout kept his ‘O’ intact with an otherwise dominant performance.

In the opening minute of his short-notice scrap with Almakhan, Nurmagomedov ate a big looping right hand that sent him crashing to the canvas. An overzealous Almakhan swarmed his opponent, but quickly paid the price as Nurmagomedov was able to use his wrestling to recover and dominate the remaining four minutes of the opening round.

That trend continued for the final two rounds with Nurmagomedov flexing his ground game and landing a series of elbow strikes that had Almakhan bloodied and unable to offer much in the way of offense. In the end, Nurmagomedov moved to 17-0 in his mixed martial arts career with his last five victories coming under the UFC banner.

Official Result: Umar Nurmagomedov def. Bekzat Almakhan via unanimous decision (30-25, 30-26, 30-26)
