Off the back of his impressive victory over the course of the weekend in the main event of UFC Vegas 96, surging middleweight threat, Caio Borralho is on a fast track to the championship, however, admits he will have his hands full if he has to face the unbeaten, Khamzat Chimaev — labelling him his toughest training mate.

Borralho, who managed to scoop himself the number five rank at middleweight this week, turned in an impressive unanimous decision win over former title challenger, Jared Cannonier over the course of five rounds — landing in a headlining bout for the first time since his move to the organization.

Dropping the former title challenger in the final round, Borralho would ride out a unanimous judging victory over the ex-championship chaser, and made his intentions clear to fight the winner of an expected rematch between current champion, Dricus du Plessis, and former champion, Sean Strickland next.

However, the Fighting Nerds staple has shared some insight into some of the arduous training regimes he was put through during his time with Xtreme Couture — labeling Chechen star, Chimaev his most challenging partner due to his wrestling ability.

“Oh dude, for the sure the hardest guy to train [with] is Khamzat (Chimaev),” Caio Borralho told The Schmo. “He’s a very hard guy to train. His style, his wrestling background — he’s very good at wrestling. He goes hard all the rounds. I think he’s one of the hardest training to do.”

“I’ve been training with Sean Strickland, (Chris Curtis), too — very tough guys and hard training,” Caio Borralho explained. “Training with Sean Strickland is very hard, too, because he always pushes forward like screaming at your face. But, I think Khamzat is the guy who is most difficult to train with for sure. But he is the guy that I develop myself most.”

With his second-round submission victory against Edmen Shahbazyan at UFC Vegas 96 on Saturday, Gerald Meerschaert now has the most finishes in middleweight history, overtaking the record once held by the great Anderson Silva.

‘GM3’ had to dig deep after finding himself in big trouble during the second stanza. Shahbazyan delivered an onslaught of strikes on the ground, targeting Meerschaerts head with fists and elbows. Continuing to move and protect himself, referee Mark Smith allowed the action to continue. Before long, the barrage of blows came to a halt as Shahbazyan appeared to gas himself out going for the finish.

Eventually, Shahbazyan allowed Meerschaert back to his feet which gave ‘GM3’ the opportunity to secure an easy takedown. Once he was on top, it was just a matter of time.

The Racine, Wisconsin native moved into 3/4 mount and locked in an arm triangle that forced Shahbazyan to tap out.

In addition to breaking Silva’s longstanding record, Meerschaert also kept his 100% finish rate intact under the UFC banner.

Asked about his accomplishment during the post-fight press conference, ‘GM3’ admitted that being mentioned in the same sentence as someone like ‘The Spider’ is pretty cool, but he still has a lot more work to do inside the Octagon.

”It’s cool to say, I don’t think about it too much right now,” Meerschaert said. “It’s just kind of one fight at a time, and I wish I could give you more than that because it is a cool thing. Truthfully, if I sit here and stop and give myself a little pat on the back, like, that’s awesome — just to have my name in the same conversation or sentence as somebody like Anderson Silva or Demian Maia and guys like that, that’s great — but I got a lot of fight left in me, I’ve got a lot more fights to go” (h/t Sportskeeda).

Meerschaert has submitted 29 of his opponents in 37 career victories with another six wins coming by way of knockout making him one of the most prolific finishers in all of MMA.

The future appears to be bright for Caio Borralho after pulling off a decision win over Jared Cannonier in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night card at the Apex.

The two had a hard-fought battle filled with plenty of strikes. Borralho’s kicks seemed to get the better of Cannonier in the first round before the former title challenger found a groove with his punches in the second.

They were even in terms of striking numbers in the third, but “The Natural” managed to get “The Killa Gorilla” wobbly late in the frame. Cannonier battled back in the fourth round by delivering with his power, forming heavy damage around one of Borralho’s eyes.

The Brazilian managed to gain the fifth round, however, by dropping Cannonier with a one-two in the closing minutes and nearly scoring the finish.

“I caught him with some good jabs, and I think all these jabs hide my left hand, and when I (was) touching with my left hand, he felt (it) all the times,” Borralho told Megan Olivi for ESPN. “But he’s so durable, you know? He’s so tough. He’s been with the best in the world so many years. Crazy. He was in the UFC in 2015. That was the year of my last defeat, my second MMA fight.”

Caio Borralho Claims He Is A New Champ On The Rise

Borralho ventured his way into the UFC after a pair of wins over Aaron Jeffrey and Jesse Murray on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021. Since then, “The Natural,” representing the Fighting Nerds team, has surged upward in momentum by defeating the likes of Paul Craig, Micha? Oleksiejczuk, and Makhmud Muradov prior to Cannonier.

Now with bigger opportunities in his future, in addition to his callout of champion Dricus Du Plessis in the Octagon, Borralho is expecting to be placed in the top five of the middleweight ranking when they’re updated next week.

“I hope to see my name on Tuesday in the top five of this division,” Borralho said. “You know I’m coming for my belt. The mantra of this training camp was to show the new champ arrived. And I think everybody saw that (there is) a new champ on the rising [sic] – a guy that never gives up and (has) all skills.”

Borralho, who entered his first headliner under the banner of the promotion overnight as the number twelve ranked middleweight contender, managed to turn in a Fight of the Night display with perennial contender, Cannonier — en route to an impressive unanimous judging win over the course of five rounds.

And extending his winning spree to an impressive seven straight fights since his landing in the UFC from Dana White’s Contender Series, Borralho has staked his claim for a shot at the middleweight crown next, with former champion, Strickland expected to take on South African star, du Plessis first and foremost.

Following his win over Cannonier, Maranhao native, Borralho suggested he fight for the title in his next outing — but was unsure if he would be fighting du Plessis or challenger, Strickland.

“I got (Sean Strickland) winning this fight [with Dricus du Plessis], because I think Strickland won the last one, but maybe he left a little bit inside the Octagon that he could do a little bit more,” Caio Borralho told assembled media after UFC Vegas 96. “But MMA is crazy. I always bet against Dricus and he always wins, so I’m not betting on the next one.”
