Pat Barry and Mirko Cro CopHaving experienced the UFC from the cheap seats as a fan, from sports bars, from restaurants with my face covered in wing sauce, from living rooms and from the (relative) comfort of press row, it was time Saturday to check off another box: the UFC theater experience.

UFC 115 marked the promotion’s second card partnering with Fathom Events to show pay-per-views in movie theaters. The partnership was announced in February and UFC 111 in March kicked off the experiment. The UFC has said that fans’ reaction to watching their Octagon action on the silver screen the first time around was “a great experience and better than they had expected.”

I wanted to put that statement to the test, but I knew after a day that had already seen my butt in the same theater’s seats for “The A-Team,” plus a pre-fight meal of wings and fries, that I might very well be in for a five-round war.

In his rounds speaking to the press, Couture answered a few questions from The Province newspaper in Vancouver.

Most surprising celebrity who has been a fan?

“I guess, probably the one that caught my attention the most, and maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise, was Shaquille O’Neal. I met him during the season of the first Ultimate Fighter and when I fought Tito [Ortiz, at UFC 44 in Las Vegas on Sept. 26, 2003] … well, when I walk in the cage and stand there, waiting for all the introductions and nonsense to get over with and the fight to start, I’ll pick out somebody on the far side and make eye contact with them. It passes that minute or so for me. That night, it happened to be Shaquille. He’s so damn big. So I winked at him and smiled and I guessed it freaked him out. I’ve talked to him a couple of times since then and he’s a great big, huge, funny guy and he’s expressed interest in fighting.”

How would he do?

“I think he’s a tremendous athlete. He’d probably do well. It’d be interesting to see him and Hongman Choi [the 7-foot-2 South Korean MMA star] hook it up. A couple of 7-footers out there, slinging leather. The ring would suddenly look very small with those two in it.”

After facing one of his childhood idles, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, UFC heavyweight Pat Barry had to make a trip to the hospital after their fight due to a broken hand and foot.

Barry posted the picture from his Twitter account, twitter.com/hypeordie, noting that he broke his hand in the first and his foot in either the first or second round against the big Croatian.

Broke hand in first Broke something in foot in first or second

Nooo, it sucks to say, but I pannicked last night after I knew my hand and foot were done. I burned out trying to end it with power hits.

Barry’s performance in the fight was certainly affected by the injuries, after dominating the first round against “Cro Cop,” and helped to lead to his submission loss in the third round.

The UFC president, Dana White, talked about the loss for Barry, noting the fighter offered too much respect as a friend instead of facing a dangerous foe.

“He respected Cro Cop, but kind of had this feeling like I know I’m going to take him out tonight. I think he played that fight all wrong.”
