UFC bantamweight prospect Umar Nurmagomedov isn’t in any rush to enter the bantamweight title picture following another impressive win.

The 15-0 Umar, the cousin of former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, earned a dominant win over Nate Maness at UFC Vegas 57 last weekend. To the surprise of many, he didn’t use his post-fight Octagon interview to call out a specific opponent in the Top 15 as he continues his climb in the division.

Nurmagomedov knows he has what it takes to make a splash in the 135lb division, but he wants to be fully prepared for the opportunities that lie ahead.

During his UFC Vegas 57 post-fight press conference, Nurmagomedov explained why issuing a callout at this stage in his career doesn’t make sense for him.

“If they give me [Top 15], I’m ready. But I don’t want to say someone’s name,” Nurmagomedov said. “Step by step, I think I come to close, I come to be inside the top 10, top 5, and then fighting for the belt. Slowly, slowly, I improve, I improve everywhere, and it’s gonna be great.”

Nurmagomedov went on to clarify that he’s ready for anyone, anywhere at any time for his next UFC test.

“I don’t care if they give (top 15), I’m ready. If they give me quick (rise), I’m ready. If they give slowly, I’m ready. For me, (what’s important), I win (every fight),” Nurmagomedov explained. “And (someday), it’s gonna happen. You have to become champion.”

After a delayed start to his UFC career due to three-straight fight cancelations, Nurmagomedov has won three straight on the sport’s biggest stage. Before his victory over Maness, he earned submission wins over Brian Kelleher and Sergey Morozov.

Nurmagomedov is looking to become the latest Dagestani to make a name for himself in the UFC. However, he doesn’t have a clear path in mind to the top and appears unafraid of anyone currently in contention.

Umar Nurmagomedov continues to live up to the hype after earning a dominant unanimous decision victory over Nate Maness at UFC Vegas 57.

With cousin Khabib in his corner, Nurmagomedov asserted his grappling dominance early on against Maness, easily taking the American down in the first two rounds and landing some savage elbows and strikes from on top.

In round three, Nurmagomedov showed he’s not just a grappler, landing a brutal kick to the face, before taking Maness down once again and pummeling him with heavy ground and pound. In his post-fight interview, the 26-year-old called for a top-ten bantamweight for his next opponent.

Nurmagomedov is now undefeated in 15 professional MMA bouts and riding a three-fight win streak in the UFC. He made his promotional debut in January last year, having previously defeated Sergey Mozorov and Brian Kelleher via submission.

UFC bantamweight prospect Umar Nurmagomedov has described his frustration at the struggle to remain active early into his Octagon career.

Umar, the younger cousin of legendary former UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, is set to make his third walk on MMA’s biggest stage tonight at UFC Vegas 57.

Following an emphatic first-round submission victory over promotional veteran Brian Kelleher at UFC 272 earlier this year, the Russian is making a quick three-month turnaround to share the cage with Nate Maness tonight.

But Nurmagomedov’s desire to fight often and rise up the bantamweight ladder fast hasn’t been possible up to now. The undefeated 26-year-old signed with the UFC back in February 2020, just one month before the COVID-19 pandemic began to cause havoc across the globe.

After canceled matchups with Hunter Azure, Nathaniel Wood, and Sergey Morozov, it took 11 months for Nurmagomedov to finally announce his arrival. He did so in a re-arranged bout with Morozov, whom he submitted in round two.

After requiring cruciate ligament surgery soon after, the highly touted 135-pound prospect was left on the sidelines for over a year before returning against Kelleher.

During his appearance at UFC Vegas 57 media day on Wednesday, Nurmagomedov described the difficult period. But while he admitted that his inability to fight regularly was irritating, the AKA product said he didn’t let the layoffs go to waste.

“It was really frustrating. I got signed to the UFC, then did my debut, and then for a long time I couldn’t fight. It was very frustrating, but it’s part of the sport,” said Nurmagomedov. “These things happen. When you train hard, injuries are part of the sport.

“But one thing that is different with me, is I don’t take time off. Even when I was injured, I was trying to do something, two training (sessions) every day, at least go show up, learn something new,” Nurmagomedov added. “When I got signed, I did my debut and it was COVID, it was bunch of other reasons, the injury, but I never let myself down. I kept training, and it is what it is.”

Nurmagomedov Plans On High Activity

Now, as he prepares for his first quick turnaround, Nurmagomedov says this level of activity is the plan moving forward.

After announcing his intention to fit two more fights into 2022 following his date with Maness tonight, the surging 26-year-old confirmed that he’ll be looking to feature in four fights every year, providing he can remain injury-free, of course.

“I hope I will be fighting two more times in this year, I hope,” said Nurmagomedov. “I think if you don’t have injuries, why not (four fights a year)? You can do this.”

UFC bantamweight Nate Maness believes that more than just the perception of his matchup against Umar Nurmagomedov has gone into forming the lopsided odds for their fight.

While tonight’s card perhaps lacks the star power and name-value of the last two, UFC 275 and UFC Austin, the promotion’s return to Las Vegas’ Apex facility is still bringing some intriguing matchups along with it, one of which pits in-form 135-pound prospects Maness and Nurmagomedov together.

With a combined record of 28-1, the pair are certainly two of the more notable rising bantamweights, with one looking to take a step closer to the rankings at the other’s expense.

For Maness, his UFC Vegas 57 appearance will mark his fourth walk to the Octagon. “Mayhem,” a former TKO Bantamweight Champion, has gone 3-0 under the UFC banner. After debuting with a unanimous decision victory over Johnny Muñoz Jr., Maness extended his overall win streak to four with a pair of second-round finishes against Luke Sanders and Tony Gravely.

But despite his unblemished UFC record and two-fight stoppage streak, Maness will enter his fourth Octagon outing as a sizable underdog. On BetOnline.ag, the Tennessee native sits at +650, while Umar, the younger cousin of GOAT contender Khabib Nurmagomedov, holds favorite status at an eyebrow-raising -1200.

While he acknowledged his opponent’s talent during his appearance at UFC Vegas 57 media day, Maness did suggest that the majorly-lopsided odds, which he branded as “disrespectful,” are down to the fact he’s fighting a Nurmagomedov, rather than a gap in skill.

“He’s great. I don’t think anyone can watch him and say that he’s not great. (But), you know, the odds show a little bit disrespectful towards my side I think,” said Maness. “(It’s) just ’cause of that last name. I’m coming to fight… these are the fights I want.

“I think it’s good for my friends. Man, they’ve made all kinds of money since I’ve been in the UFC. So, it’s all good,” added Maness. “I mean, (Nurmagomedov) is great, he’s a great fighter. I don’t have too many bad things to say about Umar.”

While some would agree with Maness’ assessment of Nurmagomedov’s -1200 line, the Dagestani has certainly justified the hype surrounding him so far in the UFC.

In two appearances, the 26-year-old has extended his unblemished professional résumé to 14-0 courtesy of a pair of rear-naked choke submission victories over Sergey Morozov and Brian Kelleher.

While Maness is expecting to give the AKA product his toughest test to date tonight, Nurmagomedov will be targeting another dominant performance and an ascension closer to the top 15 as he looks to following in the footsteps of his older cousin.

UFC featherweight prospect Umar Nurmagomedov is set for his latest challenge inside the Octagon, as he’ll meet Nate Maness at an upcoming UFC Fight Night.

On June 25, Umar, the cousin of lightweight legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, will be looking to extend his perfect record at the expense Tennessee native Maness, who has fallen to defeat just once in his professional career.

News of the bout, expected to take place inside Las Vegas’ Apex facility, was first reported by MMA News’ James Lynch.

Nurmagomedov (14-0) has had an impressive start to his Octagon career, recording back-to-back submission victories over Sergey Morozov and UFC veteran Brian Kelleher, the latter of whom fell to the Russian at March’s UFC 272 pay-per-view.

With the pair of finishes, the 26-year-old added numbers six and seven to his submission tally, which is comprised of six rear-naked chokes and one Peruvian necktie. He’ll look to add another stoppage to his résumé this summer.

In his way of doing so will be Maness (14-1), whose sole defeat to MMA Factory product Taylor Lapilus is all that separates his record from Nurmagomedov’s. Since joining the UFC in 2020, “Mayhem” has gone 3-0, a record that includes a TKO win against Tony Gravely and a submission victory over Luke Sanders.

Having not competed since last September, Maness will be looking to open his 2022 account by halting the surge of the highly-touted Nurmagomedov. But with Umar being spurred on by Khabib and the rest of the American Kickboxing Academy team, adding the first blemish to his record will be no easy task.
