Kevin Lee found himself sliding down a slippery slope, even before he was hit with a USADA suspension.

Lee revealed that he was being sanctioned by USADA, earning a 6-month suspension for his prescribed Adderall, used to his ADHD. He said that the main reason for this suspension was due to his failure to secure a therapeutic use exemption, despite doctor’s orders.

After news broke of his suspension, Lee was seen flushing the remainder of his pills, saying that he was quitting cold turkey, as well as giving up alcohol. Speaking on The MMA Hour, the Motown Phenom explained that this was something he was planning on quitting before he got the USADA suspension, saying that he could feel himself becoming addicted.

“Yeah, there was a part of that (feeling like they I was getting addicted). I’ve got an addictive personality anyway, so when I realized like ‘Oh, this shit actually works,’ that can get dangerous.”

As far as the suspension itself goes, Kevin Lee says that he understands that he messed up, but that Adderall was not a performance enhancing drug, at least not to him. He denied the idea that he was taking this as a way to focus on his fights.

“It definitely helps you in life but I don’t necessarily know if it ever helped me get bigger, faster, stronger, or even focus more during the fight. I think that’s one of the things you can even see during this fight (with Daniel Rodriguez). I kind of lost focus in the second round, and I wish I could’ve been on (Adderall), you know. I probably should’ve just smoked weed or something, then it probably would’ve been a whole lot better,” Lee said.

While this was obviously a less than ideal situation to be in, the good news is that the six month suspension that Kevin Lee is facing is retroactive to his fight with Daniel Rodriguez, meaning he will be able to return in March. He says that he plans to use that time to bulk up for his run at welterweight, so it will be exciting to see how he looks in his return.

Juancamilo Ronderos

Juancamilo Ronderos is just weeks removed from his UFC flyweight debut, but he’s already taken a step backwards after testing positive for cocaine following a USADA post-fight drug test.

Ronderos realized his MMA dream as a last-minute replacement at UFC Vegas 27, fighting David Dvorak. He would go on to lose by submission but earned the respect from the UFC brass for taking a short-notice bout on a big stage.

Following the devastating loss, Ronderos was notified by USADA that he would be suspended for one month for cocaine use. USADA recently spoke out on the suspension and went into details about why he’ll be sidelined for one month.

“USADA announced today that Juancamilo Ronderos Alvis, of Las Vegas, Nev., has accepted a one-month sanction for a violation of the UFC® Anti-Doping Policy,” USADA declared in a statement. “Cocaine, a non-Specified stimulant, is prohibited in competition and considered a Substance of Abuse under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and the UFC Prohibited List.

“An athlete who discloses the use of a prohibited substance to USADA upon entering the UFC Anti-Doping Program will not be deemed to have committed a violation if USADA determines that a positive test for that substance resulted from the athlete’s use prior to entering the program.”

Ronderos fights out of the famous Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas and has accumulated a 4-1 record in five professional fights. He previously competed with WXC before the short-notice leap to the biggest stage in the sport, the UFC.

Do you think Juancamilo Ronderos could be a factor in the UFC flyweight division after his suspension?

CM Punk

WWE star CM Punk made his pro MMA debut at UFC 203 back in 2016. Punks debut was shut down in the first round by Mickey Gall with a submission victory.

Two years later, CM Punk made his return to the octagon where he faced Mike Jackson at UFC 225. The outcome was very much no different, whilst CM Punk was able to go the distance with Jackson he was once again outperformed. Leaving CM Punks MMA record 2-0 with a disappointed White insisting that this would be the last time we would see Punk in the UFC.

CM Punks journey to triumph had been short lived.

Even though he managed to make it out of the first round and go the distance, White had still been left unimpressed.

“He got clipped a lot in that fight, it looked like he was hurt bad a couple of times.”

“I love the guy. He’s the nicest guy in the world. We gave him two shots. He had a lot of heart tonight, yeah, I think he should call it a wrap” (H/T BJPenn.com)

Since the loss at UFC 225, CM Punk has found his record updated. MMAJunkie confirmed through a Freedom of Information Act request and confirmation that Punks loss to Jackson had since been overturned.

According to the report from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Jackson had tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol, a chemical found in marijuana. It has been confirmed that Jackson had been penalized however the news of the result being overturned had only been confirmed recently.

Official Statement Released:

“The official result of a full contact martial arts bout can be changed to a ‘No Contest’” if there is “an adverse post-bout disciplinary finding against a contestant”, Chris Slaby of the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation had told MMAJunkie this Wednesday.  “As detailed in the consent order provided, Mr. Jackson tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol due to marijuana following the June 9, 2018 UFC event”. (H/T MMAJunkie)

Punk and Jackson have yet to fight in the UFC again. Whilst it is known that we may never see Punk fight again, Jackson had been scheduled to face Dean Barry this year, however that fight is yet to come to fruition.

Do you think this loss overturned will mean a potential return for CM?

UFC Women’s Bantamweight fighter Raquel Pennington has reported her own violation to USADA following taking prescription pills that she wasn’t aware breached the UFC Anti-Doping Policy.

In a statement on her Twitter Pennington explained that she had been prescribed medicine by a doctor and began taking it before realizing it was a breach of the Anti-Doping Policy, at that point, she contacted USADA and turned herself in.

“This morning, USADA will be announcing a violation I committed of the UFC anti-doping policy. Here are the facts. I went to my physician about a medical condition I was experiencing and was prescribed several medications to treat the condition Unfortunately, I took the medication for a brief period of time, before realizing I should have checked on their status under the program. I soon discovered that these medications may be prohibited, so I immediately stopped taking the medication and contacted the UFC to report this potential issue.”

Following this, USADA put out their statement reaffirming what Pennington has said and expressing that the fighter willingly cooperated in the process.

“During her self-report, Pennington provided information that she was prescribed and provided 7-keto-DHEA and AOD-9064 by a doctor to help treat a medical condition. After using the substances for a short period of time, she conducted research and learned that they were prohibited substances and immediately came forward about her use to USADA. Pennington was eligible for a reduction to the period of ineligibility based on her forthright declaration prior to sample collection and for her Full and Complete Cooperation.”

As a result of the breach, Pennington has been issued a six-month suspension from the sport, this began on the date that she came forward with the declaration of use on November 17, 2020.

Pennington was last to compete at UFC on ESPN 11, in June of 2020.
