The Cyborg Who Cried Wolf

Cyborg is a beast. No matter how you want to slice it she’s dominated women’s MMA and is the best women’s fighter to date. However, her legacy has always been marred with rumors. Because of her insanely muscular physique, especially for a female fighter, there has always been questions as to whether the former Invicta FC champion was using PED’s.

Well The Brazilian striker isn’t exactly helping her case. Cyborg and her team released a statement Thursday that she has in fact tested positive for a UFC banned substance, and could possibly facing a one year suspension from USADA.

The substance is called spironolactone and is a diuretic commonly used to treat heart, liver, and kidney issues, as well high blood pressure and potassium issues. However, it has always been linked to masking performance enhancing drugs which is why it’s on the banned list.

Cyborg and her team claim the diuretic was doctor prescribed as therapy from damage done by 3 brutal weight cuts she had to endure this year. Two of which were fought at a catch weight of 140lbs – cutting down from a 170lb frame.

She also claims the treatment was the reason for her passing up a title shot in February due to her doctor advising her to lay off competition for 90 days. It doesn’t appear Cyborg applied for a TUE (therapeutic use examination) which would’ve allowed her to use the substance.

Cris Cyborg has  been tested 14 times by USADA previously (11 times this year) and has never tested positive. She has even been looked at in the MMA community as an advocate against PED’s which makes this news even more alarming. The sample was taken in a random out of competition test on December 5th and could lead to a minimum one year suspension.

Rep: Cyborg Failed Test ‘Not For A Steroid’

Earlier today (Dec. 22, 2016), it was announced that the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) had informed Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino of a possible anti-doping violation. The UFC quickly released a statement on the news, although the promotion did not say exactly what substance Justino tested positive for.

The Brazilian’s team, however, is claiming that the failed test was ‘not for a steroid’:

“Not for a steroid, and she has a prescription as part of the post fight therapy she’s been receiving due to the severe weight cut,” Justino rep Ray Elbe wrote on the popular MMA message board The Underground (Via MMAJunkie). “This has been known for a few days, and Cris’ doctor has been in direct contact with USADA turning over all the necessary patient files to document the reasons Cris needs the medication.”

It appears as if Elbe is relating the failed test to the brutal weight cut “Cyborg” puts herself through to get down to the 140-pound limit, where she has fought at in her last two UFC appearances:

“Cris had issues with her kidneys and blood pressure, and that’s part of a prescription she’s been seeking for therapy,” Elbe wrote. “Cris doctor works with several Olympic and UFC athletes who are also under USADA testing and this was part of the treatment given to her the Monday after the weigh-ins.”

“Cris has not misused the prescription and has been assisting USADA with every request. I’m not a doctor, and so I don’t know the specifics of the prescription and the treatment purpose of each ingredient, but this treatment process is the reason Cris turned down a fight Feb. 11, as her doctor said the three cuts in eight months were damaging her body.”

“I suspect her doctor (will) speak to the media about the specifics eventually.”

As far as turning down fights goes, it was reported recently that “Cyborg” had turned down multiple fights for the UFC’s inaugural 145-pound championship, which will be on the line when Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie fight in February.

Elbe also admitted that Justino will likely receive a ‘penalty’ no matter the situation:

“It’s really a shame,” Elbe wrote. “Cris will inevitably receive some penalty from this. She needed the medicine to recover from the weight cut. People slammed her for not fighting Feb. 11, but she was recovering from the extreme weight cut and was in treatment. Her doctor told her the three cuts in eight months were becoming dangerous.”

Before it has even had its first official fight, the UFC women’s featherweight division has suffered a heavy blow. The UFC confirmed in a statement today that it has been notified by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation by women’s MMA star Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino.

Justino, who is also the current Invicta FC featherweight champion, has been under contract with the UFC for some time, and began fighting for the promotion earlier this year, appearing in a pair of 140lb catchweight bouts. She most recently fought at UFC Fight Night: Cyborg vs. Lansberg in September, scoring a TKO win over the unheralded Lina Lansberg in the second round. The UFC raised eyebrows when it announced earlier this month that the inauguaral UFC women’s featherweight title would be awarded to the winner of Holly Holm vs. Germaine de Randamine at UFC 208. Many had tapped Cyborg as a shoe-in to be part of the first UFC women’s 145lb fight. Justino, however, claimed she was unable to make weight in time.

This is not the first brush with doping violations for Justino. In 2011, she tested positive for stanozolol metabolites and was stripped of her Strikeforce title. That led to a beavy of criticism over the years from fellow fighters, most notably Ronda Rousey.

It’s important to note that USADA and the UFC do not release details publicly on the nature of the substance a fighter failed for when notifying of a potential violation of the Anti-Doping Policy. According to USADA’s fighter database, Justino has been tested 14 times thus far since their UFC Anti-Doping program took effect.

The UFC statement reads in full:

The UFC organization was formally notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection on December 5, 2016.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full fair legal review process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed.

Consistent with all previous potential anti-doping violations, additional information or UFC statements will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

NAC Suspends, Fines Brock Lesnar For UFC 200 Test Failures

Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar has finally been dealt his punishment from the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) for two failed drug tests before and after his UFC 200 win over Mark Hunt.

Lesnar will be suspended for one year and will also pay a $250,000 fine in a settlement he reached with the Nevada attorney general’s office. The hulking WWE star tested positive for estrogen blocker Hydroxy-clomiphene twice during his match with Hunt, first in a June 28 out-of-competition test issued by the UFC’s anti-doping partner USADA, and the second directly after his co-main event bout with Hunt at the massive summer card, which he originally won by unanimous decision.

The win will be changed to a no contest, and the fine equals 10 percent of Lesnar’s then-record $2.5 million disclosed purse. The suspension almost definitely means the 39-year-old Lesnar, who had been out of MMA for almost five years when he shocked most by revealing his return in June, is finished fighting in the UFC.

His test failures have incited a monstrous backlash from Hunt, who has been irate in demanding half of Lesnar’s purse due to his belief his health was legitimately at risk. The fan favorite knockout slugger has publicly blasted the UFC for granting Lesnar a special exemption from the normal USADA returning procedure, supposedly turning down two fights and gearing up for a legal battle against his employers.

It remains to be seen what comes to fruition from that bitter battle, but Lesnar has been dealth essentially the same sit that former light heavyweight ruler Jon Jones received, interestingly enough, for testing positive for the same substance before his scheduled UFC 200 match-up with Daniel Cormier that was canceled.

Lesnar was allowed to fight, and he dominated. Was the punishment enough?

Former UFC light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones was recently suspended one year by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after testing positive for multiple banned substances surrounding his scheduled UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) rematch with reigning titleholder Daniel Cormier.

Jones was still awaiting his punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), but that wait is now over. According to a report from MMAFighting.com, the NSAC has followed USADA’s lead and handed “Bones” a one year suspension retroactive to July 6, 2016, the date that his test results came back.

Jones tested positive for an anti-estrogenic agent as well as an aromatase inhibitor, which led the UFC to pull him from UFC 200 just days prior. When he met with USADA, “Bones” blamed the failed test on a contaminated sex pill, which USADA confirmed was indeed tainted.

The former champion will be eligible to compete again this coming July.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones is currently serving out a year long suspension handed to him by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) due to a failed drug test surrounding his scheduled UFC 200 rematch with Daniel Cormier.

This wasn’t Jones’ first issue outside of the cage, however, as the ex-champion has dealt with multiple legal issues as well as with issues regarding drugs and alcohol. In fact, he recently detailed his troubling history with alcohol to Joe Rogan on the UFC color commentator’s podcast:

“I had this crazy thing that I would do where I would party one week before every fight,” Jones Rogan. “And I did it throughout my whole career. And it was stupid, but it was this mental crutch that I had.”

“I literally would, one week before every fight,” Jones said. “I would go out and I would get blacked out wasted. And my logic was, if this guy were to beat me somehow, I can look myself in the mirror and say, the reason I lost is because I got hammered the week before the fight.”

Jones then referenced one fight, his five round war with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165, where his performance was negatively affected by his questionable habits:

“I trained for the fight, but I definitely had this thing where I felt invincible,” Jones said. “And I did a lot of wild stuff leading up to the fight. I definitely didn’t give it my all. Really partying, drinking, staying up all night.”

Jones’ alcohol issues have certainly cost him more than one performance he wasn’t happy with, and he admits that his relationship with it has never been ‘healthy’:

“My relationship with alcohol was never healthy, and I never went through a period in which I had a mature, healthy, responsible relationship with it.”

Despite the somewhat scary stories Jones shared with Rogan, he did also tell the color commentator that he has been sober for 16 months. The former 205-pound king is eligible to return to action in July 2017.
