Vagab Vagabov Catches Five Month Suspension For After-the-Bell Cheap Shots at WSOF 23

One thing we overlooked in our gif-heavy recap of last weekend’s MMA action was perhaps the most glaring error of judgement of them all — aside from Bellator’s decision to bench Linton Vassell for a medical suspension that he didn’t have. It occurred during the featured bout of the prelims in a middleweight clash between Dagestani Vagab Vagabov and late-replacement opponent Brian Grinnell, and boy oh boy was it a humdinger of a douchenozzle move.

You see, Vagab Vagabov — aside from sounding like the name of a B-rate Austin Powers villain — is also kind of a dick. Which is why, after the referee waved off the fight after a flurry of Vagabov punches and knees landed on a covered up (but still standing) Grimmell, the undefeated Dagestani decided to throw two of the most blatant, unnecessary after-the-bell cheap shots ever committed (with all due disrespect to Paul Daley).

“Stop! Ref, take control!” shouted announcer Chael Sonnen in the immediate aftermath. And while the ref eventually managed to do so, it was Ray Sefo & Co. that laid the real hammer down, suspending Vagabov for five months as of this morning, as MMAJunkie reports.

Vagabov, who trains out of Jackson-Wink MMA in New Mexico, is additionally facing discipline from the Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission pending an investigation of the incident.

“I spoke with Vagab and his team, and they were very apologetic for his actions,” said WSOP vice president Abdelaziz said. “Vagab got caught up in the moment and expressed remorse for his mistake, but as a company, we simply cannot let moments like this go without addressing them directly. We hope this penalty sends a strong message to everyone on our roster that such infractions simply will not be tolerated.”

And good on you for doing so, WSOF, but I think a more obvious solution lies right in front of you. That’s right, I’m talking about Vagabov vs. Palhares in a classic “Battle of the A-Holes” match. Winner gets a set of steak knives. Loser gets fired.

Oh, have I got your attention now?
