Rousimar Palhares Receives Weak-Ass Suspension During Typical Snafu of an NSAC Hearing

(NSAC when making any decision, essentially.)

If his most recent performance against Jake Shields at WSOF 23 taught us anything, it’s that Rousimar Palhares is not just an asshole, but a willfully dense asshole who poses a consistent threat to his opponents that reaches far beyond what the rules of the sport allow. He was disciplined on two separate occasions during his time in the UFC for holding onto submissions too long — the second of which earned him his walking papers — and was stripped of his title and suspended indefinitely following the Shields incident in August.

The man is clearly a danger to himself and anyone around him, but mainly to anyone around him, is what we’re saying.

Enter the Nevada State Athletic Commission, a group of supposed authorities on the sport who have proved their incompetence at nearly every possible venue. Whether they are struggling to figure out how a conference call line works to hilarious effect or spending upwards of two hours questioning a fighter about Thai black market sex juice, NSAC has proved time and time again that they will never recover from the departure of Keith Kizer.

Having most recently incurred the wrath of MMA fans worldwide for their decision to suspend Nick Diaz for an unprecedented five years, few of us knew how the NSAC would treat a repeat offender of Palhares’ nature during today’s hearing (which was sadly not available on Fight Pass), especially once it was revealed that he had opted not to have a lawyer represent him. The answer, as it turns out, is typical of what you’d expect from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Enter the Nevada State Athletic Commission, a group of supposed authorities on the sport who have proved their incompetence at nearly every possible venue. But before we get to that, let’s allow Bleacher Report’s Jeremy Botter — who was in attendance at today’s meeting and live-tweeting the entire thing — break down the absolute clusterfuck that Palhares’ defense was.

First off, referee Steve Mazzagatti was sworn in to provide his side of the story, having been the man who attempted in vain to pry Palhares off of Shields on the night in question.

It’s never a good look when Steve freakin’ Mazzagatti is calling a guy out for his incompetence, but OK, we’ve established that Palhares had his hand held right up to the moment he decided to use it to main yet another fighter. Now let’s get to the man himself…

Why a man who has both a tenuous grasp on both the English language and the sport he is competing in would choose to represent himself is just one of the many mysteries of the man they call “Tree Stump” (also “He Who Ate My Children”).

At this point in the meeting, NSAC commissioner Pat Lundvall laid into Palhares with the fire of a thousand suns, telling “Toquinho” that “it didn’t matter what your opponent did, you were going to hold it” before calling in surprise witness Big John McCarthy to further bury Palhares for the no good dirty sumbitch that he is.

McCarthy went on record as saying that, though Palhares seemed to be a nice enough guy out of the cage, “disconnect somewhere concerning fight stoppages” and “a disregard for the safety of his opponents.”

“If Nick Diaz got 5 years for weed, Palhares is most definitely about to get hammered for life,” we collectively murmured on Twitter, and oh wouldn’t that be some life-affirming justice!!

Of course, you know by now that the NSAC is about anything but justice, which is why, despite calling in expert witnesses to lambast a repeat, violent offender who perjured himself on multiple occasions during his own testimony, the commission ultimately slapped Palhares with a two year suspension and a $40,000 fine (plus court fees).

I don’t even know where to begin. Any attempt at a hyperbolic rant would be null and void when compared to the actual facts, which seems to be that repeatedly smoking weed will get you a five year suspension, while repeatedly causing excessive physical harm to others will get you only two. Despite all her posturing and fervor aimed at Palhares, Lundvall wrapped things up by stating, and I quote, that “they [couldn’t] issue the most severe punishment because they’ve never done so before.” This is the kind of airtight logic that the governing body of the sport abides by, ladies and gentlemen.

We once again throw it over to Jeremy Botter for comment.

Vagab Vagabov Catches Five Month Suspension For After-the-Bell Cheap Shots at WSOF 23

One thing we overlooked in our gif-heavy recap of last weekend’s MMA action was perhaps the most glaring error of judgement of them all — aside from Bellator’s decision to bench Linton Vassell for a medical suspension that he didn’t have. It occurred during the featured bout of the prelims in a middleweight clash between Dagestani Vagab Vagabov and late-replacement opponent Brian Grinnell, and boy oh boy was it a humdinger of a douchenozzle move.

You see, Vagab Vagabov — aside from sounding like the name of a B-rate Austin Powers villain — is also kind of a dick. Which is why, after the referee waved off the fight after a flurry of Vagabov punches and knees landed on a covered up (but still standing) Grimmell, the undefeated Dagestani decided to throw two of the most blatant, unnecessary after-the-bell cheap shots ever committed (with all due disrespect to Paul Daley).

“Stop! Ref, take control!” shouted announcer Chael Sonnen in the immediate aftermath. And while the ref eventually managed to do so, it was Ray Sefo & Co. that laid the real hammer down, suspending Vagabov for five months as of this morning, as MMAJunkie reports.

Vagabov, who trains out of Jackson-Wink MMA in New Mexico, is additionally facing discipline from the Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission pending an investigation of the incident.

“I spoke with Vagab and his team, and they were very apologetic for his actions,” said WSOP vice president Abdelaziz said. “Vagab got caught up in the moment and expressed remorse for his mistake, but as a company, we simply cannot let moments like this go without addressing them directly. We hope this penalty sends a strong message to everyone on our roster that such infractions simply will not be tolerated.”

And good on you for doing so, WSOF, but I think a more obvious solution lies right in front of you. That’s right, I’m talking about Vagabov vs. Palhares in a classic “Battle of the A-Holes” match. Winner gets a set of steak knives. Loser gets fired.

Oh, have I got your attention now?

The 7 Most Brutal GIFS, Vines, and Videos From Last Weekend’s MMA Action

With Bellator, Glory, RFA, WSOF, XFC, and damn-near any promotion *not* named UFC all holding events over the weekend, there was simply too much action for one understaffed and grossly underpaid MMA outlet to cover. So rather than give you long and boring results recaps of each event (that you’ve already read elsewhere), we’re going to bring you the cream of the crop, the highlights of the highlights, in the form of these gifs, vines, and videos from each event. Capiche?

We begin with easily the most horrifying gif of the bunch, taken from Saturday’s XTreme Fighting Championships International 11 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Just over a minute into a featherweight contest between Guilherme Faria and Missael Silva de Souza Falcao Feijao dos Santos Ruiz (or simply Silva for short), Faria unleashed a monster left hand that zombified his opponent, leaving Silva with the worst knockout face since that one Asian “Faces of Death” kickboxer. Had Silva opted to enjoy a post-fight wank session, there’s not a doubt in my mind that this gif would already have a Potato Award locked up.

Check out a plethora of uber-violent gifs from WSOF, Bellator, and more after the jump.

Next up, a gif that is equal parts predictable (Tito Ortiz losing) and surprising (via submission) from the finishing sequence of Bellator 142′s main event. In what we can only pray was Ortiz’s final final performance, the former UFC champ turned Bellator challenger started off strong with some nasty ground-n-pound. Towards the end of the first round, however, Ortiz got tangled up in the spider web that champion Liam McGeary’s guard has become, forcing him to use the ol’ “Brazilian tap” to get out of an armbar. Unfortunately, Ortiz then slammed himself directly into a reverse triangle and was forced to tap for reals, awarding McGeary the victory with just 20 seconds left in the round.

In case you’re wondering, yes, Tito did manage to completely steal McGeary’s moment in the post-fight interview, as well as remind everyone that, and I quote, ”I’m a legend, or people call me a legend, or whatever.” Way to represent your heritage and your race, Tito.

The first round of Bellator’s 4-man light heavyweight went rather smoothly by all accounts, with King Mo picking up an easy decision win over Linton Vassell to kick off the main card. On the other end of the bracket, former UFC top contender Phil Davis took on former Bellator champ Emanuel Newton, and damn if he didn’t make it look easy. Davis took Newton to the mat early and often before — in a complete departure from the fighter we came to know in the UFC — finishing The Big Homie with a kimura in the first round.

And if you thought that was crazy, just wait until you see this…

Remember how we said everything was going smoothly in the *first* round of Bellator’s tournament? Well, the thing about that is, it kind of fell apart after that.

Yes, King Mo was forced to withdraw from his second fight after tearing cartilage in his ribs in the Vassell fight, which bumped former UFC middleweight Francis Carmont (who had picked up a decision win over Anthony Ruiz earlier in the night) into the tournament finale against Davis.

And then…the unthinkable happened. You’ll have to check it out for yourself, because my computer is not allowing me to type “Phil Davis” and the word that we know as “knockout” less than seven words apart.

Over at WSOF 23, Justin Gaethje clashed with Luis Palomino in an immediate rematch of their WSOF 19 “Fight of the Year” contender from back in March. The fight lived up to expectations, turning into another gritty barnburner that saw both men bloodied and battered in under two rounds, as did the finish. The sound of that right hand, lawdy…

WSOF 23 also saw crimefighter turned MMA fighter Phoenix Jones bounce back from a defeat in his WSOF debut in April via a submission of Roberto Yong with the ever-rare leg scissors choke midway through the second round. Thankfully, the ref on hand was able to recognize Young’s tap before we had another Kim Couture-level disaster on our hands. The win improves to Jones to 6-1-1 as a pro overall.

Finally, we have this absolutely brutal falling tree KO which transpired in a light heavyweight tilt between Tomislav Spahovic and Gustav Dietz at FFC 19 on Friday . The only thing more ridiculous than the speed at which Spahovic crashes to the canvas is the absolute lack of emotion the announcers display upon watching it happen. Joe Rogan would have burst a blood vessel in his taint and these guys treated it like the golf announcers in that Geico Kraken ad. That’s some true professionalism, folks.
