Amid his exit from a scheduled welterweight fight with Vicente Luque this weekend at UFC 296, undefeated striker, Ian Garry has claimed he is “annoyed” more than anyone else at his exit from the flagship card, as he deals with pneumonia. 

Garry, who was scheduled to feature in a high-stakes welterweight clash at UFC 296 later this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, was removed from the three round affair with Luque, with UFC CEO, Dana White confirming how flu-like symptoms eventually resulted in pneumonia, forcing medical officials to rule the Dubliner from the card. 

“Alright, guys, I know it’s out there – there’s some speculation that Ian Garry and (Vicente) Luque is off, it is true,” Dana White said on his official X account in a video posted. “Ian Garry started with the flu, that turned into pneumonia, so that fight is off and is not happening. It is true.”

Slated to appear during Wednesday’s media day availability to speak with assembled press, Garry’s manager and wife, Layla Anna-Lee confirmed how the 25-year-old would not be able to attend the function, however, had every “intention” of appearing at a press conference, slated for later today.

And following Anna-Lee’s statement, reports emerged detailing how Garry had been forced from his fight with Luque this weekend.

Releasing a statement addressing his withdrawal from UFC 296, Portmarnock native, Garry confirmed how UFC medical staff forced his exit from a bout with Luque, much to his annoyance.

“Spoke to Ian Garry moments ago,” Ariel Helwani posted. “I have pneumonia. They tried to help me. I the end, UFC doctor said there’s no chance I can fight. The UFC doctor made the call. This annoys me more than anyone. I want to fight. It’s my favorite thing to do.”

What do you make of Ian Garry’s exit from his UFC 296 fight with Vicente Luque?

Undefeated welterweight contender, Ian Garry is officially out of his scheduled main card clash with Brazilian-American, Vicente Luque at UFC 296 this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, with the Portmarnock striker reportedly battling with pneumonia and flu like symptoms ahead of the event.

Garry, the current number ten ranked welterweight contender, was scheduled to make his fourth Octagon walk of the year at this weekend’s pay-per-view event in ‘Sin City’ – taking on Kill Cliff FC training partner, Luque in a high-stakes matchup at 170 pounds.

Skirting media day obligations last night at the UFC Apex facility, Garry was expected to attend tonight’s press conference ahead of the slated UFC 296 card on Saturday.

Ian Garry forced from UFC 296 return this weekend

However, UFC CEO, Dana White has now confirmed that Garry will not be featuring against Luque at UFC 296 this weekend, with the 25-year-old battling with pneumonia ahead of the bout, with Luque removed from the card entirely with a replacement fighter unavailable on such short-notice.

Last featuring at UFC 292 back in August of this year, Garry turned in his thirteenth straight professional victory, with the former Cage Warriors welterweight champion defeating division stalwart, Neil Magny in a one-sided unanimous decision victory. 

Garry himself has since addressed his withdrawal from the bout, revealing he wants to fight, however, was removed from the event by medical staff.

Undefeated welterweight contender, Ian Machado Garry has vowed to silence the noise surrounding his personal life in the run-up to his UFC 296 main card clash with Brazilian-American contender, Vicente Luque, and make “easy work” of the perennial challenger this weekend.

Garry, the current number ten ranked welterweight contender, improved to 13-0 as a professional in his most recent outing back in August, landing a one-sided unanimous decision win over another staple welterweight, Neil Magny in the pair’s main card outing.

The victory came as Garry’s sixth consecutively under the banner of the Octagon, since his landing in the UFC following welterweight title success with Cage Warriors back in 2021. 

And to the consensus, Garry will face the most high-profile opponent and most difficult test of his young career to date in his fight with Luque this weekend at UFC 296.
