Video: Wanderlei Silva is Out to Prove He Can Still Compete Against Cung Le

The UFC uploaded an interview with Wanderlei Silva today in which the former PRIDE middleweight champion discussed his upcoming UFC 139 bout with former Strikeforce middleweight champ Cung Le.

The consummate crowd favorite says that he actually took some time to decide whether or not he’d have enough time to prepare for the short notice bout as a fill in for Le’s original opponent, Vitor Belfort, who bowed out of the event due to injury.

“I was just chilling. I was at home with my son. These days I’ve been teaching classes at my gym. I got a text asking if I wanted to fight at UFC 139. I was in shock. But a good shock. I was planning on fighting again, but I didn’t think it would be so fast. I was preparing to go back in February. I wasn’t sure right away,” he reveals. “I was thinking if I needed more than eight weeks, but I was already conditioned from [my fight with Chris Leben in July]. I took a break from training, since I had no fight scheduled, but now I’m already training good and hard. I was very happy. It was a great surprise.”

I took a break from training, since I had no fight scheduled, but now I’m already training good and hard. I was very happy. It was a great surprise.”

“The Axe Murderer” says he was still disheartened by his loss to Leben and that the offer to fight Le made him shake it off and refocus on training for the bout, which he says will be an entertaining one.

“I was very sad after my last fight with the results, but this fight cheered me up and I want to give a great performance for my fans. Cung Le is a very good opponent. He has good muay thai. He is a good athlete. I think this will be a fight with lots of movement. There will be legs flying everywhere. I will be training a lot of kicks. I’m gonna kick him a lot. If he comes around with those spinning kicks… if he hits me in my stomach like he likes, I will get very mad,” he explains. “Don’t bring that kick because I am already training the defense for it. He goes one, two and gives a little step forward [and] he spins after the step, I already got that one. That one won’t work. Go find another one.”

Although he gives his opponent props, Silva displays some uncharacteristic swagger when talking about who will have the crowd advantage in San Jose.

“I will be facing a good opponent in a co-main event. He will be at home; he is from San Jose, but I know I also have a lot of fans in San Jose. It will be a great competition,” Wand says. “I wouldn’t be surprised if this time the fans root against Cung Le. I am a fan favorite. Don’t be sad, Cung Le, if the fans from San Jose cheer for me more than for you. Don’t be jealous; when you fight against someone else they’ll root for you.”

For Silva, his fans have always been as, if not more important to him than fighting itself. as such, it’s no surprise that he is dedicating the bout to the fans who keep pushing him to compete regardless of whether he wins or loses.

“My fans who are with me, like I say, are not my fans. They are my friends. You guys are the reason why I keep trying. We have to keep trying. I lost a few, but some time I will get back to winning. It’s a question of time. I will fix my mistakes and perfect my game. Soon I will meet victory again and that will be a great joyful moment. I want to thank you guys from deep in my heart for all the affection and all the strength you gave me after my last fight,” he says. “If there was one good result in my last fight, it was to see that you guys are with me no matter what. That is priceless; you are my fans for life — my friends for life. I hope to have the opportunity to shake your hands and hug each one of you — you who cheer for me, who send me messages, who get happy and sad with me. I hope to pay back the affection and respect you guys have for me and all of the energy and strength that you give me. I hope you guys are all successful at your goals and that God keeps blessing you and your families. Thank you all. God bless.”

The main event at UFC 135 proved that Jon Jones is for real. The 24-year old phenom annihilated former champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson for three full rounds before finally submitting him in the fourth.

The dominance he displayed was just the latest in what is becoming a long run of fights where Jones hasn’t even truly been tested. Early in his career, we all thought that it was just because he wasn’t fighting top competition—but now he’s doing it against some of the very best fighters in the world.

There’s no doubt that Jones is the top light heavyweight right now, but there’s also a very real case to be made that he is the best ever at 205 pounds.

In order to determine that, though, we have to take a look back at the other top light heavyweights in history. These five fighters have secured their place in history among the elite in their weight class and are in the conversation of being the best ever.

Wanderlei Silva: Now UFC’s Equivalent of Kazushi Sakuraba?

Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva stopped Kazushi “The Gracie Hunter” Sakuraba each time on three different occasions a long time ago, in a far away kingdom called Pride Fighting Championships. But there is no stopping Sakuraba and Silva from continuing to fight—despite the mostly brutal stoppages suffered by both legends in their last fights.

Now, we are witnesses to two brave, ageing warriors who don’t belong to the same gene pool which spawned Randy Couture and Dan Henderson.

In the last eight fights of each warrior, here are the cold stats: a record of 2-6, with four losses coming by way of KO, suffered by Silva (the last at the hands of Chris Leben at UFC 132); 3-5, with three defeats by stoppage (the last due to a bloodied, ripped ear versus Marius Zaromskis in Dynamite!! 2010) for Sakuraba.

But stats are just numbers, and Silva, replacing the injured Vitor Belfort, will welcome Cung Le to the Octagon November 19, 2011 at UFC 139.

Cung Le, in turn, might finally hand one of the greatest MMA fighters ever his farewell fight. And credit—or blame—goes to Michael Bisping for losing to Silva at UFC 110, further convincing the senior warrior that he’s still got some gas left in the leaking tank.

For his part, Sakuraba—hold your breath!—will face a certain Yan Cabral this Saturday night at Dream 17.

Silva and Sakuraba still fighting is giving Rocky Balboa a run for his money.

And while we’re at it, why not a fourth match between the two irrepressible fighters? (You want it, don’t you?)

Maybe this time Saku will take it, a la Quinton Jackson finally knocking out Silva in the UFC after getting KO’d by the latter twice in Pride.

“Old soldiers never die; they just fade away…”

Vitor Belfort Injured, Wanderlei Silva to Replace Against Cung Le in UFC 139 Co-Headliner

Due to an undisclosed injury, UFC middleweight Vitor Belfort will not be showing off his “powerful trunks” against Cung Le at UFC 139 (November 19th, San Jose). Dana White broke the news via Twitter, adding that Le’s new opponent will be another Brazilian legend — none other than Wanderlei Silva.

Silva vs. Le will serve as the co-main event of UFC 139, which will be headlined by the PRIDE-era fantasy match between Dan Henderson and Mauricio Rua. Silva is coming off his 27-second knockout loss to Chris Leben at UFC 132, while Le will be making his Octagan debut 17 months after his rematch victory over Scott Smith.

After the booking switch was announced, Belfort tweeted that his injury isn’t serious, and he should be ready to roll again in December. But my God, Belfort’s string of bad luck is unbelievable. From a broken hand before his fight against Matt Lindland, to an injured shoulder before his fight against Anderson Silva, to a bout of hepatitis before his fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama, the dude can’t seem to string together a full year of good health. Lets hope the UFC has another good fight for him when he’s intact again.

Wanderlei Silva will make his return to the Octagon on November 19 in San Jose, when he takes on former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le at UFC 139.

UFC President Dana White announced today that Vitor Belfort had to pull out of his fight with Le because of an injury, and as a result Silva will step in and take it.

Although the fight was only booked because of Belfort’s injury, Silva vs. Le is actually a better fight all around than Belfort vs. Le. It should be a better draw for the UFC because Silva is such a fan favorite, and it should be a more competitive fight because, frankly, Belfort was probably going to put Le to sleep. Silva has a chance to do that, too, but he also has a chance of being put to sleep himself.

No matter who gets knocked out, Silva and Le promise to put on a highly entertaining fight. They’re too of the most exciting strikers in the middleweight division, and two guys who rarely if ever put on a sub-par performance: Win or lose, Silva and Le both deliver.

UFC 139 will be headlined by the return of Dan Henderson, who will fight Shogun Rua, and will also feature Brian Bowles vs. Urijah Faber, Jason Brilz vs. Ryan Bader, Kyle Kingsbury vs. Stephan Bonnar and Martin Kampmann vs. Rick Story.
