This Saturday, July 2, 2011, Wanderlei Silva will make his return to the Octagon taking on the dangerous Chris Leben in a highly-anticipated middleweight contest.
Leben is coming off of a knockout loss to the heavy-handed Brian Stann. Leben originally called out Wanderlei after defeating Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116 last July. Leben was on a three-fight win streak until he met Stann at UFC 125, so in this fight he is looking to bounce back to get himself back into the big picture.
Silva has not been inside the Octagon since UFC 112 where he defeated Michael Bisping by way of unanimous decision. Since that fight, he has been dealing with injuries.
Videos of Wanderlei’s training for this fight have become available on YouTube and he appears to be in excellent shape and ready for this fight. Wanderlei is getting up there in age and at the current moment, this is his last chance at greatness in a realistic aspect.
Even though he has only won two of his last seven fights, his impressive debut at middleweight against Bisping really shot his stock back through the roof.
His inactivity has hurt him in a rankings standpoint, but since when have rankings truly mattered?
An impressive win should easily make him if not top-10, at least top-12 in the world. But, the big question still remains: Does Wanderlei have what it takes to make it through the middleweight division and get a shot at the title before he retires?
The answer is YES!
At this current moment, the UFC middleweight division is truly lacking depth. Nate Marquardt dropped to 170, and was then cut. Chael Sonnen is suspended, Damian Maia recently lost to Mark Munoz and Michael Bisping (has never truly defeated a top-10 UFC middleweight) has somehow put himself in the position for a chance at the title if he defeats Jason Miller.
Wanderlei is a legend, in all truths with a win, he would be one to three fights away from a title shot, it just all depends on what happens with Anderson Silva after his fight with Okami (if he wins).
Wanderlei is being written off by many people, many say he just doesn’t have it anymore. Those people must have missed his fight with Bisping. At this moment in time he truly appears to be in the best shape of his life, and has also aligned himself with very solid camps outside of his own personal gym in Las Vegas.
Never count Wanderlei out. He is easily in the top five of greatest of all-time, and always gives it his all. He is truly a force a middleweight.
So, will Wanderlei defeat Leben and make himself one step closer to a shot at the middleweight title? Tune in this Saturday night to UFC 132 live on PPV to find out.

UFC 132 will take place on July 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The fight card will close out a run of six straight weekends of UFC/Strikeforce fight cards.
The main event at UFC 132 will feature the promotion’s first bantamweight title fight, as champion Dominck Cruz (17-1) looks to avenge the only loss of his career when he faces off against former WEC champion Urijah Faber (25-4). Cruz lost to Faber back in March 2007, falling via first round submission in a bout that saw Faber successfully defend his WEC featherweight title.
Also competing on the main card will be Wanerlei Silva (30-10-1-1). The “Axe Murderer” makes his return to the Octagon after a prolonged time away due to injury rehab. Silva will jump right back into the fray, facing Chris Leben (25-7). Silva has not fought since he defeated Michael Bisping in February 2010. Leben is coming off a loss to Brian Stann on New Year’s Day 2011.
Also on the main card, Tito Ortiz (15-8-1) will look to win his first fight since defeating Ken Shamrock in October 2006. Ortiz is in a must win situation, as he has been informed by UFC president Dana White that this will be his last chance with the organization. Standing in Ortiz’s way will be Ryan Bader (12-1), whose only loss came at the hands of current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Ahem. As you can see, Wanderlei Silva is hard at work at Kings MMA, preparing for his UFC 132 bout against Chris Leben with the kind of ferocity normally reserved for gay beer commercials. Man, Wandy and Shogun have so much fun together. The next time I host a barbecue, I’m going to make everybody play this game. Shirts off, gentlemen. Shirts the fuck off.

Once upon a time, you were terrified of Wanderlei Silva. He did scary things to people. He did it a lot. You kind of wondered if he was legitimately crazy. He intimidated opponents during his walk to the ring while the un-toughest techno you’ve ever heard played in the background — to the point that “Sandstorm” is now universally recognized as Badass. We didn’t even know that Badass had a transitive property, so we thank Wanderlei for teaching us that, as well.
The Axe Murderer returns to action this weekend, perhaps on the downside of his career. The Octagon has never been kind to Wandy — he’s got a 3-5 career record for the UFC– and he’s not getting any younger. If MMA does have a nine-year rule, then this 15+ year veteran should be ready to hang it up.

But he’s not. After sixteen months away from fighting to mend a boo boo and have an ouchie taken care of, Wanderlei Silva is ready to fight. He’s surgically repaired, rested, and, to hear him tell it, has a compulsion to get in the cage and fight somebody so powerful it borders on a physical need. ”I’ve been out. I had a hard year for me,” he told MMAFighting. “I’m a competitive guy. I like to be in the octagon and fight my whole life. I had a really tough year.” Never one to back down from a brawl, Wandy asked for, and got, a bout with Christian Cyrus Leben.
Now, you can’t throw a mini-recorder through a local MMA show in Parkville, Missouri without it recording some talk about “going to war” and “expect fireworks”, and yeah, sometimes we get a little jaded about it. Can we at least agree that it’s safe to believe it coming from these two? I, for one, am willing to believe that Silva just wants to go out there and throw hands. Unless the Athletic Commission is cool with stomps and soccer kicks; he’d totally be down for that, too.
Anyways, as your Lead Writer at the CagePotato Fanboyism Desk, i present this video of the nicest, sweetest explosively-violent man you could ever hope to meet. Enjoy.

Despite the injuries and removed bouts scheduled for UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber, it is still an extremely exciting card. The entire event, from top to bottom, is stacked and perhaps the strongest of the year. The preliminary card alone could be its own event on Spike TV or Versus.
There are some key matchups, particularly in the lightweight division, that could clear up some of the confusion and create some real contenders. There’s a few potential barnburners and a title on the line.
Let’s break down each bout and select likely winners, shall we?
