War Machine’s Big House Blog Fans Rejoice; Jon Koppenhaver Is Headed Back to Jail for a Year

If you’ve been missing War Machine’s acclaimed Big House Blogs, you’re probably the only group that is going to be happy about this news.

According to the fighter formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver, he has been sentenced to another year in jail in Las Vegas for an old charge, forcing him to withdraw from Bellator’s season six welterweight tournament that gets underway in March. He indicated on Twitter that he will begin serving his sentence in two weeks and that, as per usual, he isn’t happy with the system.

Nevermind Ive been out for over 6 months now and doing great and am finally back on my feet. Nevermind all my students that will miss me. Do another year and rot n waste time. Make no money, pay no taxes. Whatever, I just hope my boy @bensaundersMMA wins @BellatorMMA tournament. Fuck the motherfucking system! Fuck the bullshit! Vacation time, back to jail in 2 weeks! Cant stop me, all you can do is delay the inevitable. War Machine will always be back! Oh ya the judge looked and me and said she can tell Im on steroids and that thats prolly why I got in so many fights and am angry..lol Bitch”

 

I actually feel bad for the guy. He genuinely seemed to be focusing on getting his life together and he had an impressive showing against former UFC poster boy Roger Huerta. Maybe changing his name back to Jon would be a step in the right direction since most judges might look at the name “War Machine” as being a red flag.

I’m guessing this won’t help sway his belief that Obama has fucked up America beyond repair.

Bellator Season 6 Update: War Machine Gets His First Opponent, Maiquel Falcao Joins Middleweight Tourney

Two interesting updates to Bellator’s sixth season, which begins March 2nd…

— After signing to the promotion in December, War Machine has secured his quarterfinal opponent for Bellator’s upcoming welterweight tournament. As he wrote on Twitter yesterday, “Fuck ya its on! My first fight in @BellatorMMA tournament will be March 30th vs. Karl Amoussou!! Gonna send him back to France in peices!!” It will be Machine’s first appearance since his impressive post-prison win against Roger Huerta in November.

Karl “Psycho” Amoussou (13-4-2, 1-1 in Bellator) is indeed French, and has also competed for M-1, Strikeforce, DREAM, and Pancrase. The Haute Tension product most recently scored a first-round TKO over Jesus Martinez in a 175-pound catchweight bout at Bellator 59 in November. Bellator’s Season 6 welterweight bracket will include Bryan Baker, Brian Foster, undefeated triangle-choke specialist David Rickels, and Season 5 tournament finalist Ben Saunders. War Machine is already looking forward to an emotional reunion with his TUF 6 castmate.

— Sherdog has confirmed that one-time UFC competitor Maiquel Falcao (28-4) will make his promotional debut as part of the Bellator Season 6 middleweight tournament; his debut date and first opponent haven’t been announced yet. Since being released from the UFC last May due to legal drama, the Chute Boxe-bred knockout artist has gone 2-1 in Brazilian leagues. Though he reportedly suffered a heart-attack in November, Falcao downplayed the story on his Facebook account, writing: “I’ve had some health problems caused by excessive training. This generated several rumors, but none of them is true. What actually happened was too much training, not enough rest.”

War Machine‘s career comeback is picking up steam. After his third-round TKO victory against Roger Huerta last month — War’s first match after spending a year in prison for assault — the previously-troubled welterweight has announced his signing with Bellator: “So it’s now official public knowledge. I signed with Bellator and will be in the next welterweight tournament. [I] can’t wait to be back fighting on live television with the big boys.”

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney confirmed the signing, though not War Machine’s participation in the next welterweight bracket; his debut date and opponent is yet to be announced. As Rebney told MMAJunkie, “Jon’s not had an easy road. And there’s no doubt he’s made some poor choices, but after having had conversations with him since his release, he really seems to understand where and why things went wrong and wants to make them right…I hope he’s able to turn this second chance into something positive.”

Of course, this isn’t War Machine’s first contract with Bellator. Back in January 2009, War — then known by his given name Jon Koppenhaver — signed with the upstart Bellator promotion following his release from the UFC, which stemmed from comments he made about Evan Tanner’s death and his refusal to take a fight against Brandon Wolff. But his mouth quickly got him in trouble again, as he was fired by Bellator a month later for implying that somebody should assassinate the president.

War Machine’s bad judgment later got him fired from the porn industry, which I had no idea was even possible, and led to a year-long lockup for one nightclub beating too many. And now he’s getting a second chance with Bellator, which has put War in a reflective mood:

“My past has kind of shaped and molded who I’ve become, but the mistakes I’ve made in the past have definitely made me realize that I have to avoid certain situations in order to be the type of person I want to be. I pressed rewind, and now I have a chance to get my life back on track. It feels great. Not everyone gets this kind of opportunity. I’m just stoked to be back in the mix here with Bellator. I didn’t get released from Bellator because I sucked. I got released because I was making poor decisions in my life. Right now I’m just out to show the world that I do belong here fighting the best with Bellator.”

Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver, the fighter who first gained fame on The Ultimate Fighter before his career was sidelined by legal troubles, has signed on with Bellator, fresh off his release from jail and a win in his first fight back.

Bellator confirmed the signing on Thursday.

Koppenhaver’s signing is actually the second time he’s hooked up with the organization. In 2009, he was set to start with the group but was cut before ever actually fighting for them.

That was just one of a series of problems in a topsy-turvy life that has included among other things, serving one year in jail for a felony assault conviction, and briefly performing in adult movies.

In his fight career, he is 12-4, and has fought once since regaining his freedom, defeating Roger Huerta by third-round TKO in November.

Bellator did not offer details on when he might debut, but it’s likely that he will be included in their upcoming welterweight tournament when their sixth season begins on March 2.

After a year in the pokey, War Machine finally returned to competition Saturday night at Ultimate Warrior Fighting 1 in Pharr, Texas, where he faced off against former UFC lightweight darling Roger Huerta in the event’s welterweight headliner. And even though prison ring-rust has to be the worst kind of ring-rust — nutraloaf and sandwich masturbation don’t exactly make for an ideal fighter lifestyle — Mr. Machine handled himself admirably, out-hustling Huerta in a gritty back-and-forth scrap.

Unfortunately, Huerta broke his rib during a scramble in round three, seemingly when War sneaks in that knee at the video’s 15:10 mark. War Machine took advantage of Huerta’s weakened state and laid on punches from the top until the match was stopped. And so, War Machine writes the first chapter of his unlikely comeback story, while Huerta picks up the fifth loss in his last six attempts.

Special props to the always colorful Phil Baroni, who was particularly qualified for his commentary gig considering he’s trained with War Machine at Xtreme Couture, and used to drink snake-blood in Thailand with Huerta. But he’s an even better TV director. (“There’s a ring card girl with a nice ass; put it on her, not on me, dude…The camera guy’s telling me to look at him! Shut up camera-guy before I knock you out!”)

Lord knows the broadcast needed the help. You know you’re watching a second-rate MMA production when they show fans in the crowd while the fight is happening. Check out the portly cowboy at the 2:59 mark. Even he’s like, “bro, of all the people to film right now.”

In his first fight back after serving a year-long prison sentence for felony assault, War Machine, formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver, stopped Roger Huerta this past Saturday at the inaugural Ultimate Warrior Fighting event in Pharr, Texas.

Huerta, who was fighting up a weight class at welterweight, said afterwards that he suffered a fractured a rib during the final scramble in the third round where he rolled out of War Machine’s submission armbar attempts to claim side control.

From there, War Machine escaped from Huerta’s side mount to directly take full mount with ease. Machine (12-4) then rained down punches for the referee stoppage at three minutes and nine seconds. Huerta (21-6-1) has now lost three in a row.

On the same stage as War Machine-Huerta, former UFC middleweight champion Dave Menne won by first-round guillotine submission over Eric Davila.

Thompson explodes after controversial decision
Last May at KSW 16, James Thompson submitted Mariusz Pudzianowski with an arm-triangle choke and he probably needed another finish as well to ensure victory at Saturday’s KSW 17 in Poland. In a two-round fight with a potential overtime round, Thompson won the first round clearly on ground control, while Pudzianowski arguably scored enough on punches in the second. But instead of going to a Thompson win or an overtime round, Pudzianowski was awarded the majority decision.

Stunned by the scores, Thompson took the mic away from the announcer and went off on the promoter.

“F—ing joke. Give Mariusz a big round of applause,” Thompson said. “What a f—ing joke. I thought KSW was really trying to be serious. If you can watch that back and call it serious, then you’re f—ed and KSW is going down the f—ing toilet.”

On Monday, KSW said there was an error on one of the judge’s scorecards and the result has officially changed to a no contest.

Dantas wins Bellator bantamweight tournament
Eduardo Dantas (13-2) outpointed Alexis Vila (11-1) in the finals of Bellator’s bantamweight tournament on Saturday to earn a shot next year against champion Zach Makovsky. On the same card, UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino announced his retirement from MMA.

Bongfeldt wins tune-up
Two-time UFC competitor Jesse Bongfeldt (16-5-1) won by second-round submission over Brandon MacArthur (6-18) Saturday at Rumble in the Cage 45 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Bongfeldt was released by the UFC in June following his loss to Chris Weidman at UFC 131.

Zaromskis pulls off a front roll somersault kick
Marius Zaromskis pulled off an incredible somersault kick to set up a KO finish against Bruno Carvalho at Rumble of the Kings 6 in Stockholm, Sweden. Zaromskis (16-6) was coming off a decision win over Eiji Ishikawa at DREAM in July.
