Zhang won the 115-pound strap from Jessica Andrade via first-round knockout in China this past August. Now, she’s preparing to make her first career title defense against a woman who used to rule the strawweight division, Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Jedrzejczyk is on a two-fight win streak at strawweight, her most recent win coming against Michelle Waterson in Tampa via decision.

Now, two of the very best in the world will go head-to-head for the 115-pound title at UFC 248. The event, which will go down on March 7, has yet to receive an official location or venue.

It looks like Joanna Jedrzejczyk will get the first crack at newly-crowned UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang.

MMA Fighting reports that verbal agreements are in place for Zhang to face Jedrzejczyk on March 7 at UFC 248 on pay-per-view (PPV). No location or venue for the show has been confirmed as of this writing. No official announcement on the title fight has been made either.

Zhang earned a strawweight title fight just three wins into her UFC career, thwarting Jessica Andrade with ease in front of her native Chinese crowd in August. A first-round knockout made her the first Chinese champion in UFC history. Now, she’ll take on former division queen Jedrzejczyk, who comes off a decision victory over Michelle Waterson in Tampa.

Jedrzejczyk has won her last two fights at 115 pounds, her only loss coming at flyweight in a title fight against Valentina Shevchenko back in December of last year. After some back-and-forth between Zhang and Jedrzejczyk through the media, it looks like they’ll finally lock horns in 2020.

In a recent interview, Jedrzejczyk suggested she was willing to travel to China to “beat the sh*t” out of Zhang in front of her own people.

“I signed an agreement before the fight with Michelle Waterson,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I knew that after I got the victory I was going to fight for the belt. This is what’s going to happen next, and I’m just waiting for the date and the location, and then we’re going to rock it.

“Anywhere, anytime. Bangkok, Sri Lanka, Warsaw, Toronto, it doesn’t matter where. For me, it doesn’t matter. I will make my way. Even if we have to take a canoe, I will make it to China and beat the s*** out of her.”

UFC president Dana White has suggested Zhang vs. Jedrzejczyk is, in fact, the fight he intends on making next. With that, the shots between both women continue to flow. Speaking to MMA Junkie recently, Zhang suggested she thinks she can put Jedrzejczyk away in the first or second round of a fight.

“I think she sounds very angry all the time, and her emotions will get her in trouble,” Zhang said. “She is willing to fight me now, but there was a time she didn’t want to fight me, as well. I am ready anytime for battle. Just call my manager Mr. Brian (Butler) and the boss Dana, and we can fight next week.

“I am always looking to finish a fight as soon as I can so my opponent doesn’t have to endure long periods of damage. I see the fight ending in one or two rounds. I think Joanna possesses great skill with her striking, along with good power, but I believe in my training and team to have me ready to beat her anywhere.”

Zhang has certainly shown the ability fo finish high-level opponents early, as she won the title by knocking out Jessica Andrade in the first round of their fight earlier this year. Making her first title defense against a former champion the caliber of Jedrzejczyk is certainly a tall task.
